Newcastle Unlikely To Allow Defender To Leave

There’s a lot of newspaper talk of Wolves manager Paul Lambert wanting to be reunited with his former captain at Backburn Rovers, Grant Hanley.

Grant was captain of Newcastle on Saturday in the disastrous 3-0 defeat at Oxford in the FA Cup 4th round, but although he is not a regular starter he is third choice in the center-back position behind Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles and there’s just no way Rafa Benitez will let him leave this month.

Grant Hanley in Newcastle colors

That’s especially true if the deal to bring Andros Townsend goes through and Chancel Mbemba goes the other way in the swap deal.

Chancel has gone from first choice last season under Steve McClaren to fourth choice this season under Rafa Benitez and if that deal is done then Grant will definitely be going nowhere.

If Grant’s position at the club doesn’t change much by the summer he may consider leaving Newcastle for pastures anew, but he can still do a good job for Newcastle this season in the heart of our defense.

We still rate Hanley as a good player and he just needs a run in the first team to become fully match fit and he is certainly positive on the field with his obvious leadership abilities for all to see.

That’s why Rafa made him captain on Saturday with both Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey rested for the game.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

you’d have to think the obligation to buy(if indeed the case) would have a claus on mbembas part ?
If he is doing well then id much rather him coming back to us.
doubt he’d want a permanent move to a team taking the drop.
We saw what happens when you push to sign a player who doesn’t want to be here with Thauvin.

I still think it’s a bit unfair to judge this guy coming in and playing one game every so often. He would probably play for most other teams in the division so I don’t think he’s that bad.

On Mbemba for all we know he could want to leave and his representatives could be pushing for a move. I doubt he’s going to be forced into moving to Crystal Palace like. It’s very likely he’s a willing participant.

I reckon with this new Chinese money this world super league is drawing closer
only a matter of time before the greediest people on the planet want to be part of it

at least we might have a chance of winning the prem with the top 4 gone

I cannot think of anything worse than either a European or world league. I wouldn’t want us to be part of that. Money had pushed this game in the wrong direction for too long. It’s ruined the cups. Incentive and rules need to be put in place to bring back the cups.

If Mbemba is to go, the surely he will also want guarantees of playing PL football next year. There will probably be need for some complicated clauses, such as option to buy if PL status is maintained etc etc etc
I rate Mbemba and would rather see him stay, however Rafa obviously rates Clark and Lascelles much higher. I have faith in Rafa.
I also dont understand Ed’s need to fear monger. There is no emergency, there is no absolute need to buy rashly. True we look a diminished side when Shelvey is out, but I dont see how Townsend will solve that, nor McCarthy for that matter.

Not sure what the clamour is for mbemba. He’s possibly 4th choice in the championship and last year was 1 half of the worst defence we’ve ever had…(the better half granted but still)
This year when he’s played he’s been pretty bullied too! He was embarrassing when we lost to wolves. Worst CB performance I’ve seen for a long time.
Notice for Congo he’s in central midfield.
For me, Rafa is proven to be ruthless, he sees our players week in week out in training, if he doesn’t want mbemba then I trust his judgement. I suspect, if you look at rafas career, Mbemba is too short for rafa, he seems to be prefer the taller of defenders and mbema falls just under 6ft whereas all our others are 6″2 +
We need to look at the present, Our defensive cover is decent, whereas we desperately need a creative source out on the wing
Next year if we are promoted, I’m sure hopeful the club would be looking at better players than Mbemba anyway

Watch out you’ll be classed as a drama queen with that comment

totally agree strange how Blackpool got fined a load years ago for fielding a weak team against a top 4 team but the top 4 can do it for the champions league no questions asked and in the Fa cup for a prem game

Still no news, what a joke, I bet we will be the only team out of all the leagues not to get anyone in, bet charnley and the others are too busy having sun tan in Benidorm rather than getting off their arses and get players in.

It’s time to forget about the defeat of Saturday and concentrate on what really matters – promotion. It was a poor performance but it was in a competition that for the first time ever I agree we can live without. Let’s get up, get the PL money, rebuild and then go for the cup – and win it. We were never going to win it this season, it was a distraction.
This fear mongering needs to stop as well. Rafa has said nothing has changed. That’s it. He’s in charge. Trust him to spend the money wisely, preferably next season. Getting up is crucial, it’s all that matters.
Rafa trusts himself and his players to believe he’s got enough to get promoted. If he can get who he wants he will, but on his terms. So far he’s been right so where all this disbelief has come from I have no idea.

Did expect him to play on Saturday.

Rumour doing the rounds is the clause for MBemba, is Palace would be obliged to buy, if they maintain Prem status, and we don’t get there, otherwise he can either stay or return in any other scenario. No idea how true this is.

To be fair, we don’t desperately need anyone in, if nobody leaves, it’d be nice granted, but not integral to our promotion.
We currently have Murphy, Elliott, Haidara and Gamez back who were unavailable until late December anyway
In the next week we get back Mbemba, Atsu, Diame and we also have Sammy Ameobi back (I appreciate people will laugh at this, but he was the best player in league one, and at times made an impact off the bench in the premier league, he can play his part)
Signings or No signings we should still walk to promotion with this squad!

Welshie, why would he buy anyone unless they can walk into the first team? He’s saving his money to buy players he really wants, but they’re not available now. Even Townsend might take time to get his form back – if he can – so a loan with a view to buy makes sense. Just trust the guy. Has he let us down yet? He’s turned the club around, but he can’t do it all at once. If the players he wants aren’t available, buying for the sake of it is hopefully a thing of the past.

Re Mbemba; if Paul Lambert rates him then we should keep him. The main problem is lack of game time and everyone knows a back four needs to work together as a unit to be solid and reliable.

I agree Jay, the time for worry is not now……worry about the things you can control, worrying about things you cant control just wastes time and energy.
If Shelvey is injured for 6 weeks ,we will know approximately how long hes out for and can reorganise, we know Colback and Hayden dont work well together so play Hayden and Diame or colback and diame and use pace up front rather than hollywood passes to the wings.
Rafa is not stupid, although some on here are trying to say he may be, he will counter any injury anywhere on the pitch with a solution perfect for our opposition, consider the 5 game ban as a trial by error, if we need to change because shelvey is injured, he knows what dont work now……its all good…….id still like a replacement/cover for him but Rafa knows the score

I heard Micky Gray on Talksport the other day saying PVA was alright going forward but crap defending! Makes you wonder why HH has signed him when they are shipping goals! He definitely doesn’t rate Townsend and if we get him it gives us great options going forward!

We have enough to win this league I would just like one or two in with time to settle as I expect a hard year in the prem with mid table the goal before we really try to win something or have a pop at top six.

Sammie may have to step up to the plate till summer but he has the talent just needs a world class manager to drag it outta him consistently.

    Haway the toon

I see you are up to your legendary blog mischief again -trying to disrupt and cause division and then the false “bigging up” of other posters.
We all know your tricks – please give it a rest for the sake of the blog.
And please do not play your multiples saying what a fine poster you are – you’ve been caught out on that one as well.
Give it up man – your drivel is now very tiresome. And please no mention of your budding literary career writing in the Metro.
The only connection you have with the Metro is getting on it at South Hylton.

Moonraker, well, losing their best player to a main rival makes him bitter. Does it matter he’s the best at the bottom? Says more about the rest really. He’s one of the most biased people on talksport and they’ve got plenty of those. I’m happy for them to sell their best players to their rivals. See if we see any airplanes flying over SJP at the end of this season. They won’t come straight back up, unlike us.

Your point about Ashley and the bottom line is more than fair but….it’s Ashley, the Ashley who’s swung between no spend and spending millions on players regardless of the squad/ manager needs and who’ve proved to be unsuitable for the Club.

There’s no pattern to his behaviour apart from as you said, the bottom line!
