There is is report in the Sun that Middlesbrough have made a move for Newcastle target Andros Townsend and we suppose that’s what happens when you leave the move for your target until the last moment.
However, Rafa Benitez is confident the deal will go though – which is what he said in his press conference.
We would also be very surprised if Townsend had any inkling to move to the Tees-side club who are just above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Andros Townsend – while at Newcastle
The report is that Middlesbrough have made contact with Palace over Townsend but why would Palace want to sell Townsend to a relegation rival – Sam Allardyce is not that daft.
So the news is that Palace have dismissed the approach from the Premier League club out of hand – so all is well.
So it’s a case of bad news – good news on Townsend.
Here’s the tweet from the Sun’s north-east correspondent David Coverdale.
Understand #boro have asked about Andros Townsend… But #cpfc won’t sell/loan to them. #nufc
— David Coverdale (@dpcoverdale) January 31, 2017
We are still hoping the Townsend deal will be completed today when Andros will either join Newcastle via direct transfer or will be on loan until the summer when we can then buy him.
In the first case he would cost £13M but if we take him on loan it will likely cost another £2M.
Comments welcome.

Comment #12If Townsend has to come from Bournemouth maybe he can save a seat for Max Gradel. Gradel would be a good #10. Apparently a planned loan to Hull fell through so Gradel is in limbo at Bournemouth. If not for recovering from that injury that cost him almost all of last season, he might have been able to show the class that he displayed before coming to England. Worth a hmmm at the least.
