Finally it has happened – Cheick Tiote will be leaving Newcastle today with a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.
The deal is being reported by Keith Downie of Sky Sports but which Chinese club it is – we don’t know but it looks like it’s with Shandong Luneng – it’s a two year deal.
Cheick Tiote – will leave Newcastle today
Sky Sources: Cheick Tiote has finally completed his protracted move to China.
— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) January 31, 2017
Cheick joined Newcastle from FC Twente in August 2010 for £3.5M after we were promoted back to the Premier League and he played a total of 156 games with only one goal for Newcastle.
But that goal was the fabulous equalizer in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal in February 2011 at St. James’ Park, when we came back from being 4-0 down after only 26 minutes of that game.
That amazing comeback made news around the world for Newcastle.
Newcastle now get Cheick’s wages off the wage bill – estimated to be around £55K/week – although his contract was up this June.
That’s the first of two deals we expect today – with Newcastle said to be confident of getting Andros Townsend over the line today.
There’s also a third possibility of Tim Krul moving to Watford on loan.
Here’s that fantastic equalizing goal from Cheick Tiote.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Good luck Cheick! Will always remember the goal against Arsenal. Mind you I think that goal ruined him as a player. He could never not shoot from 30 yards out again.
Good to see Ba is coming back from his injury.
Kind of funny that for a guy with a supposed time bomb of a knee, he has never had a knee injury. When he has been hurt it has always been something else and completely not related. And supposedly we used his “bum knee” as reason for not giving him a proper contract.
Wouldn’t mind seeing him leading our line. Not that he would’ve dropped to the championship but if he was going anywhere on loan to get back up to full speed, I would prefer here than Besiktas.

Comment #3Giimps….. From previous. With regards to your concerns about us being able to offload players that are not good enough and get a decent price for them. There seems to be a moral issue here, in that duping some other unsuspecting buyer that these players have a value when in fact they are worthless, raises integrity issues that are quite worrying to say the least.

The money the club have wasted paying him to sit around is scandalous.

Comment #8I see Geudiora might be going to Hull for £3m. that would be a deal worth hijacking. He would solve (even at 31) a lot of problems and be a better buy than McCarthey.

Comment #10The only problem I can with us not signing anyone in this window is the possibility of it upsetting Rafa.
Not even sure he would be that fussed as I reckon much of his so called annoyance is just conjecture.

NUFC are increasingly confident of signing Andros Townsend from CPFC. Crucially, Townsend doesn’t have to be on Tyneside to do the deal.

Comment #13If our only signing is townsend, I’d be disappointed. We have Ritchie and Atsu who are great in the wings. This is just adding depth.
But without Shelvey, it doesn’t matter who is on the wings. We are hopeless without him.

Comment #14Tiote scores a great goal against Arsenal – then ruins it by posing in an Arsenal shirt. If it had been a club outside of England, you could see past it, but to wear the shirt of another side in the same division… come on.
Imagine if Sissoko had been pictured in an Arsenal shirt.

Comment #15Good luck to Tiote, a good signing for the first 2 seasons then lost his way.
An easy target for a yellow card.
Cannot believe we are only going to sign Townsend, he adds depth but does not cover the weak positions we have at LB Striker & CM
I would love McCarthy to come to NUFC

Duping is a strong word , presumably they will have seen the players we are trying to offload too and understand their possible merits and failings, surely just because they arent good enough for us may not mean the same for a buying club.
Its not as if we have a history of such things …..er…..ok maybe we have but if the buying club reads our blog they will be informed enough if not they are as much to blame as us

Comment #17Tiote has a place in the Newcastle history books for that goal against Arsenal so good luck to him for the future.
Why we didn’t score the fifth that day I’ll never know but hey that’s Newcastle for you !

Comment #18Looks like Ashley might have said that we had to keep the wages bill at the same level so Townsend arriving was only possible on Tiote departing.
