Newcastle fans are reacting this morning to another Newcastle win – this time 1-0 against Burton Albion so it’s the perfect result for Benitez – a win and a clean sheet.
But it wasn’t perfect refereeing and the Newcastle win has been completely overshadowed in the national press by a terrible mistake by referee Keith Stroud.
He should have had Matt Ritchie retake his penalty in the first half after it was disallowed for encroachment, but instead he gave a free kick to Burton.
What had he been smoking?
Rafa Benitez gets involved – Hey what are you doing!
Here’s some reaction this morning to the game, but it’s mostly about the incompetence of the officials.
I reckon 2 more wins should do it as it’ll mean Huddersfield needing 17 points from a max 21 #HTL #NUFC #VAMOSURRACAS

We won, though still our lack of cutting edge is worrying. We need a mass overhaul in the summer #Nufc

Keith Stroud is wandering around the pitch at #nufc asking why the players haven’t come out for the third half.

Has Ritchie kicked every corner flag at SJP yet? #NUFC

If the 4th official had just got his smart phone out and googled the rule, like everyone else in the stadium….. #NUFC

Burton Albion agree the referee’s decision was a mistake and have asked if the game can be replayed #NUFC

Comment #412 big risks next year Relegation and/or Rafa going. Cannot see Ashley risking either scenario for the want of a few $M spent.
Though he usually only spends whats already earned, and that could mean waiting till the following summer….too scary to think about that like!!
Depends on this years bank balance I suppose.

Comment #42Charlie, strange how different people see different things in games innit? 🙂 Thought Diame had a good 60 minutes against Wigan as well. Last night he got through a lot of graft and can’t figure why he was marked down.
As for the replay, I think they set a precedent with the England ladies game and we would’ve had a strong case for a replay, but fortunately it didn’t come to that. Bizarre decision and I’m pleased it didn’t derail us. The fact that none of the officials could reach the right decision is a concern for me. I would’ve thought at least one of them would know the rules! Still, one of those ‘I was there’ moments. 🙂
