The poor result covered up what was one of the best displays By Newcastle for some time and while we needed that – even more important than the display at the business end of the season is the result and we only got a draw and dropped two points.
That’s a pity but it’s all over now as the Rolling Stones would say (or sing?) – and there’s not much we can do about it now.
Well, other than beat Ipswich on Monday afternoon at Portman Road and we have to do that now.
Chris Woods scores devastating late equalizer last night
That gave us the poor result

Comment #1We were so much better than Leeds it was a little sad. Thought everyone did great shame that Lascelles got caught at the end but where the ref got 5 minutes from and that fat helmet extended it…though he certainly paid for it from what I heard
Mitro man of the match? He held the ball up well but I don’t think he has a shot did he? Reckon if Murphy had played we’d of won by 4/5 goals but not to be let’s smash Ipswich next

Comment #2Was restricted to listening to the game, so am not sure which sub gave away possession that led to the free kick and goal. But if we play like that, minus the first and last 10 minutes, we should win our remaining matches. Mbemba, Anita and Ritchie got mentioned alot and seemed to drive the game forward. Hayden would be my man of the match because of his performance and the effect he had on the team, in his first start back from injury.

Comment #4Considering most of the fouls made by Leeds were not punished i couldn’t believe the ref gave 5 mind of injury time.
We constantly have decisions against us, yet Brighton’s first goal was offside, Hudders’ penalty was dubious and once again we were denied s clear pen.
Yet, despite anything the EFL try, inclyding fake rascism, we are 2nd in the league.
We were awesome and only a blinder from the keeper denied us a landslide victory.
Oh, and as i was there, i saw that fat cnut pitch invader get a smack off a fan as he was marched out…and he got fcuked up outside the strawberry, too.

That’s not true Murphy doesn’t have same the pace stamina or skills of Perez so the entire game would of been different

Comment #7What a fantastic spectacle that was. Best atmosphere in St James’ I have been in for a good while. Well done to the fans, everyone right behind the lads for the entire game.
Many are slating Rafa for the subs. Not justified in my view. If anything he brought them on too late. At the game you could see Ritchie, Perez, Mitro and even Hayden, before he was replaced earliest, were running on empty. People will say Atsu should have come on but Rafa probably figured Diame and Colback would keep it and control it better.
Didn’t work out for us but we attacked with purpose and vigour, foiled by the post, lack of good fortune and some good goalkeeping. It’s old hat to have a go at the officiating but the ref WAS poor, let LEEDS continuously break up play with foul after foul, letting them go, repeated roughing up of Mitro and to a lesser extent Perez.
The best craic of the night was definitely the SAFC / NUFC ‘going down, going up’ song for the last 20 minutes in the Corner.
Proud to be a Geordie. Hard lines lads.
Now get out there and finish the job!

Comment #8Brighton have great momentum, huddersfield are a bit stop start (like us) but I genuinely believe the performance was far more important than the result last night and now after what was a very good performance (unlike our last 5) we now have some momentum and belief that will see us over the line with an automatic promotion place.

Comment #9Why on earth do the vast majority of newcastle fans go into meltdown if we don’t batter a team man.
We played Leeds off the park today, they had the odd shot but other than that we controlled the game, but for 1 lack of concentration in the last minute.
You don’t have to blame the ref, or the pitch invader or rafas subs, it’s just the way the game went. The attackers could have perhaps been more clinical and the defence more switched on at the end, but other than jay we played very well. Reassuringly well for the last 4 games.
That’s our hardest game out the way with now.
Assuming Huddersfield win ALL of their games, two wins and a draw will do it from the following games:
Ipswich v newcastle
Newcastle v Preston
Cardiff v newcastle
Newcastle v Barnsley
9th, 13th, 14th, 15th
We’ve just played 4th in the league off the park.
Very achievable

Comment #11I am a world away from the esteemed dietitians, fitness technicians and physics that surround football these days but I would be tempted to get the lads in for a very light training session this afternoon in the sunshine, send em home to rest up til the trip to tractorville and just say go and do that again against Ipswich.
Think he will start Murphy against his old club, fresh and champing at the bit. Mitro is pretty hard but he will be stiff / sore for a day or two that’s for sure!

Best display at home this season by a mile by the team and the FANS
SJP was bouncing tonight.
Lot more tempo to our display but sorry RAFA I think you cocked up with the the subs – unless Hayden was knackered would not of brought him off for that oaf Colback – slower than the Giant Tortoises on the Galapagos Islands programme last night. All Yedlin looked a yard and a half off the pace.
Als was it Rafa’s insertuctions to piss about in the corner for the last 5 minutes – maybe should of taken a proper corner – never know might of scored
Me would of kept the starting eleven on the pitch.
But again we started slowly Leeds hit the bar and Darlow pulled off a reflex save.
Here we go with the merit marks.
Darlow 8 – had nothing much to do but the riflex save kept us at 0-0
Anita 8 – excellent game played some lovely balls linked up well and got in some decent tackles.
Mbema 8.5 started off slowly but grew into the game got in some great tackles and headers and kept the ball moving. Should of won a penalty then got pulled back trying to get onto a ball in the box
Lascelles 7 scored but got himself totally out of position for their goal.
Dummett – 7 did ok but in today’s game when the tempo quickened struggled when on the ball.
Goufran 7 started slowly but as the game went on got better. great ball to metro for the header that led to the game.
Hayden 9 My MOM – for being out so long slotted into the team and basically ran the game
Shelvey 7 did ok but wasted the ball to often with over ambitious balls.
Ritchie 8 had a good game tad unlucky with shots blocked
Perez 7 had a good game but infuriating at times gets into great positions but easily gets knocked off the ball.
Mitro 8.5 could of easily got MOM caused their defence problems all night and maybe they should of went down to ten men when their centre half pulled him down when he was trying to get a run on goal.
Subs- Colback – 5 total waste of space givee two stepd free kicks away – to slow.
Daime not on long enough
Yedlin 5 – looked slow and tried to many fancy flicks at the end.
RAFA 6 for putting out the starting team and the way they played – but sorry substitutions – arghhh.
Ref 3 piss poor again – should of had a pen and should of sent their centre half off.
NOT going to complain play like that last four games should easily go up if we can put the ball in the net
Anyway on refs – did you see the Huddersfield pen – taker missed lad hit the rebound in – must of been a yard and a half in the box when the kick was taken – err – um is that not a indirect free kick to the defending team!!!!!????

Comment #14It was a good performance yesterday and a big shame they nicked it at the last. That’s unfortunately the way I goes sometimes. We did easily enough to win.
If we play close to that in the last few games, we’ll get the points. Don’t forget that Huddersfield were very fortunate in their game as well.
On a plus side, it gives more emphasis to the type of signings Rafa will need next year – which he will already know about.

Comment #15I missed the game but seems we played much better with Hayden back in the side. Good to see DeYedlin get a few minutes, he will also push us forward in the last 4 games. If only we had another left winger. I’d give Sammy a shot, even though I don’t rate him. Or I’d play Ayoze on the left, anything has to be better than Mr Anonymous.

Comment #173 best players last night
Mitro, thought his game was spot on last night, even though he was getting kicked all night kept his head
Mbemba, grew into the game, unlucky with the header, and should have had a nailed on pen.
Anita. solid and great support going forwad.
3 villains from last night.
Lascelles, not good enough, got a goal, but thats all he did right
Perez, runs, but offers very little.
Goofy, same as Perez.
Rafa needs to work on his subs tactic, might as well have not made any, we would have won the game if he haddnt of, to late, no impact and gave the1.5 mins extra time

Comment #18All Huddersfield’s last minute winner and our ast minute concession does is feed their narrative of stealing i at the last and make our already seemingly fragile mentality that more fragile.
Can be assured Huddersfield got a double boost yesterday.
If we do make it I think we’ll scrape it by a lesser margin than we have now.
2 wins in 7 is it? Confidence crumbling. Lack of leadership showing on the pitch.

Comment #28Why do teams try and run down the clock by messing around with the corner flags? It bugs me when there is 5 minutes to try and get a second goal (all though excessive) this I believe causes teams including the TOON to lose focus and two points. We now definitely need to make this up against the Tractor Boys…..

give your head a shake man, like thats the reason,, i lost my job, and the new job kept me away from the pc during work hours, 10 hours a day, then i have a home life..
i still think he is a great coach, but not the best manager.
in the same way i know Rafa is a great manager, but there is something missing in his locker, his football has been shocking for 5 month now, his subs have been shocking since he got here.

On yesterday’s performance I would take Mitro over Wood. Wood barely had a kick but got a goal due to poor marking by laschelles. Leeds didn’t offer that kind of space or chance to Mitro, if they had he probably would have scored. Mitro bossed there defenders, so much so he managed to get both booked and set up a number of chances including the goal.

I haven’t been a fan for a while now, this should have been the season for him to stand up and make a name for himself. He never got a chance at the start because of that stupid sending off, then his shite performance against Villa where he literally stuck his fingers up at his lack of game time, that penalty thing with Ritchie. Na, I’ve had it with him and if Napoli want to offer 15M take it.

Comment #38I have no qualms about the performance or the subs from last night, thought we looked well up for the game and made sensible changes. The only thing I might have done differently is bring Hanley on instead of Diame but hindsight is an easy thing.
That was by far our best performance in the 2nd half of this season, the ref should have given us a pen and Mitro was manhandled a few times by both cbs, he kept his head and seemed to wind them up which was an added bonus. Only issue is with the ref!!
