Rafa’s Big Challenge – More Than Just Mental At Ipswich

Who would ever want to be a football manager these days?

Rafa Benitez has guided Newcastle brilliantly this season in a league he knows little about and yet in the last three games we have had our worst return for any three successive league games this season – just one point.

And in the three games before the International break we had the second worst return of any three games – just 2 points.

No wins in those six games.

So Newcastle are starting to collapse and when things get like this they have a funny way of continuing because the confidence of the players tends to plummet.

But Rafa is a top coach and he will have gone through this type of stuff before in his long career so he must turn things around.

We can very quickly get promoted if we can put a win together and Huddersfield drop points and they do have a tough game at Fulham on Saturday.

In fact in the next set of games coming up, if we win and Huddersfield don’t win then we will be promoted – so we are still very close.

This is what Rafa has said in the Chronicle today:

“In these type of games, you have to understand how to play, what to do and what not to do.”

“And we didn’t understand this during the 90 minutes. Sometimes that can happen.”

“And everything you have been preparing goes wrong on the pitch. You have to adjust.”

“We couldn’t and the other team was working very hard.”

“We played really well and deserved to win but we drew at the end because of a mistake.”

“At Ipswich, we scored a goal and were controlling the game and we made another mistake. We are paying for all of these silly mistakes.”

“I am concerned about out form.” “We need to train properly and prepare for the Preston game in the way that we have to.”

“It wasn’t just mental, it was more things than that.”

“We must try to do what we have to do and play at the same level we played against Leeds.”

We all need to be United over the last three games and we will be able to get over the line to nirvana – also called the Premier League.

I’m sure Ed has been stealing his info from my posts:-

We’ve had an awful run of form over the last few games and the consequences of not making promotion is too terrible to contemplate. Of course, if we win the next game the whole picture changes and the pressure is released. Come on lads, one last push and we’re where we want to be.
