16 year-old Newcastle defender Lewis Gibson is the younger brother of 20 year-old Liam Gibson who has been a regular for the U23 side this season at left back.
Lewis is also a left-footed defender who currently plays for the England U17 side and his excellent form this season has attracted a number of big clubs who will try to sign him for their Academy this summer.
Everton are just one of the clubs interested and they want to sign him for Steve Walsh’s youth set-up at the Toffees.
16 year-old Lewis Gibson – brilliant Newcastle youngster
The Liverpool Echo are reporting today the Blues are very keen on the teenager along with Celtic, both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Southampton.
Lewis is currently with the England U17 squad at the European Championships in Croatia.
He hails from Stanley and has been a regular in the Newcastle U18 side this term and has also played for Peter Beardsley’s U23 side.
But with Rafa Benitez keen to bring young local players through the ranks at Newcastle, surely the manager will not allow the 16 year-old to leave Newcastle.
But this will be a test of Newcastle’s Youth Academy setup, which Rafa wants to improve big time and wants the facilities improved for both the younger players and for the first team at the Benton training grounds.
It will not be good news if we lose one of our most promising U18 players to a big club this summer.
If Lewis is as good as he looks he could be pushing for a first team place at Newcastle in a year or two.
Newcastle have not done a good job over the last ten years of bringing youngsters through the Academy.
And if we are to become a top club in Europe again – which is Rafa Benitez’s sole aim at Newcastle – that has to change and change quickly.
We are hoping to hear news that Lewis is going nowhere this summer and if he does leave it will be worrying that we still don’t seem have our act together at the youth level.
