Player Of The Season – 2nd Highest Percentage Ever – Previous 9 Winners

Matt Ritchie has won the Player of the season by the second highest percentage ever.

Only Sebastien Bassong back in 2009 had a higher percentage at 67.9 and he left us for Tottenham for £8M that year after we had been relegated – 30 year-old Bassong now plays for Norwich City.

Matt Ritchie had a great first season for us and scored 16 goals and was easily our Player of the Season this year.

Given the lad dropped down a division from Bournemouth to play for us too, we know Matt is completely committed to Newcastle.

He will be even better next season back in the Premier League under the expert coaching of a certain Rafa Benitez.

Matt Ritchie – easily our Player of the Season

Take a walk down memory lane and look at some of our previous winners over the ten years this blog has existed.

It will be interesting to see how Matt will do stepping up to the premier league next season. I think he will do OK, especially with a bit more space. This season he has had a lot to do with teams parking the bus. Really need to balance the team out though with some quality on the left

I’m thinking that one-sided voting means that we have an all star or two but the rest of the squad is at a different level. I’d prefer five players on ~20% than 1 or 2 who are clearly better than the rest (Shelvey and Ritchie). Will just have to wait and see what Rafa brings in this summer to know what we’re likely to be looking at for next season.

To be fair, my guess was that the player of the season was going to be Armstrong and that he was going to get 20+ goals…too bad he was loaned out and is likely not nearly as good as I wanted him to be last summer. Oh well.

We need more pace in the side.

Does whoever (JfA?) did the season predictions thing last summer still have those in a spreadsheet somewhere and they coudl give us an update on who was closest to points total, top scorer, player of the season, etc.? That would be interesting to see.
