Former Goalkeeper Comments On Newcastle’s Current Situation

Shay GIven played a massive 354 Premier League games for Newcastle and in all competitions he racked up an impressive 462 total appearances for the club before he left for Manchester City in January of 2009.

He also played 134 times for the Republic of Ireland and is in Newcastle a lot and he has commented in talkSPORT on Newcastle’s transfer situation this summer.

Shay Given when at Newcastle

It’s really great we are back in the Premier League – back to the land of the living – after one season down below, but this is now a crucial transfer window for the club, as most pundits believe we need to strengthen the side significantly to do well in the coming season.

After their meeting on Tuesday night 9th May at an undisclosed location, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley said he would every last penny to Rafa to build a team ready for the Premier League.

Because we were only down below for one season our financial situation  is still quite good and because we spent nothing in the January transfer window the club should have money available to strengthen the side this summer.

This is what Shay Given has told talkSPORT:

“There’s talk of them having X amount of pounds to spend in the summer and a lot of players coming in,”

“Mangala has been linked with a move to Newcastle and I think it will be an interesting summer up there.”

“It will be interesting to see if Mike Ashley backs Benitez and they go heavy in the transfer market because they need to strengthen and to stay in the Premier League.”

“Pepe Reina has got a relationship with Rafa Benitez, so you can see the link there,”

“But Newcastle have got four or five goalkeepers who can play in the Premier League.”

“It will be interesting to see if anything happens and it will be interesting to see what happens at Newcastle, personally.”

“They are my old club and I spent a lot of time there.”

Given spent twelve and a half years at Newcastle after being signed by Kenny Dalglish in the summer of 1997 before leaving the club midway through what turned out to be a relegation season for us in 2009.

At the time he was fed up with the way Mike Ashley was running the club.

However, if Mike Ashley backs Rafa big time and lets him run the club with help of Managing Director  Lee Charnley then Newcastle United could become a successful club in the not too distant future.

That’s what we are hoping for.

Never seen us be linked with so many players.

Would be happy for Pepe Reina to come in and be number 1 with darlow and elliot competing, sell krul and sels and loan out woodman.

chronicle saying rafa wants a right back, centre back, left back, defensive midfielder, creative midfielder, winger and 2 strikers.

    It’s all going off today!

According to tancredibweve agreed terms with Reina, but he doesn’t know if he wants to leave Naples.

We’ve also apparently offered £12m for Ismaila Sarr, a 19yo winger in France.

Another new link too (cheers Shire) is defender Florian Lejeune, also followed by Spurs and Arsenal (reportedly)

Ok how about, Sterry, Mbabu/Mbemba, Haidara, Findlay/Barlaser, Aarons, Armstrong and Heardman, could throw in Toney and Good for good (no pun intended) measure.

Rafa’s requirements sorted at no extra cost.

Is the reina deal going through today ??
