Pepe Reina Reported To Be Staying At Napoli

News being reported in Calciomercato24.com is that Pepe Reina has decided to stay with Napoli for at least the rest of his contract which has one year to run.

Newcastle had been linked heavily with the former Liverpool goalkeeper in the last week so as Rafa Benitez was hoping to bring him to Newcastle, but if this report is true that will not happen, not this summer anyway.

Pepe Reina – staying at Napoli

Pepe’s agent Manuel Garcia Quilon met with Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis today to discuss the situation with the club.

After the meeting Quilon had this to say to Calciomercato24.com.

“Pepe will stay at Napoli until the end of his contract.”

“Certain issues have nothing to do with what happens on the pitch and do not interest us. He is staying at Napoli until 2018.”

There had been tensions growing between Pepe and some high up officials at Napoli including the President.

That tension started when both Reina and his wife walked out of the team’s end of season dinner after De Laurentiis had been making jokes about some of the goalkeeper’s performances last season.

OK – so cross Pepe Reina’s name off the list assuming the report is accurate.

newcastle cant attract high quality free transfers like Juve can…thats a byproduct of being able to offer CL football. We’re more likely to sign untested prospects who realize theyre more likely to get playing time at newcastle

I personally think newcastle should pursue viktor fischer ..for some reason Karanka didnt like him ..but he’s not a very good manager

Think this could be gamesmanship that Napoli are ‘maybe ‘ asking for a fee…possibly too high a fee so the agent has suggested Reina is going nowhere until his contract end (then they get nowt)

If not this must be the first agent happy not to try and get a transfer and prevent his little earner

The club should let Benitez negotiate his own deals. When other clubs are interested in players, you need charisma as a weapon. Charnley may excel at “bean counting” economics, but Charisma he lacks…

Some of the tales today had a “bit more meat on them” than usual.
Giroud – well I suppose, as lone striker, he would be ok. Don’t think he’ll leave Arsenal of his own accord.
I like that Abrahams lad – but – probably not get him.

Maybe they’ve been agreed with the player and his agent? Now all we need is his wife to decide between living in Italy or Newcastle.Let me just ask my wife which way she would go. Ah well its Italy thought as much.
So no move to Newcastle for Reina.

Considering we have been linked with a hell of a lot of players, we are are not yet even close to signing any of them.

When it comes to transfers it’s just same shite different day.

You seriously couldn’t make it up.

Welsh – How many clubs in the PL have signed new players for next season?

The season has basically just ended. The UEFA season is technically still going until the final on Saturday.

To say that because we haven’t signed a new player by the first of June is same shite different day is ridiculous. If we haven’t signed anyone by July 1st, sure have at it, but right now you are just moaning for the sake of it.

There was obviously some substance in the Reina story – how are Darlow & Elliot going to feel knowing Rafa wanted to bring in a keeper to be the No.1?

Tom Cairney in twitter described he ‘loved’ not lives playing for Fulham. .. Lots saying he’s joining us. Given today’s debacle I shall wait and see him in the shirt.

I think Elliott, Darlow, Krul and Sels should simply see from this speculation that they are not quite considered by Rafa to be of the required standard, and that they need to decide whether they are going to focus on staying and improving where they are considered lacking, or look to move on.

Darlow and Sels obviously have room for improvement, Elliott and Krul might think there futures may be better served elsewhere. I’d still like to see us bring in a quality keeper to start, whether it be Reina or someone else.

I can’t see the problem lying in the goalkeeping department at all. If you’ve got a half decent keeper behind a properly organised defence and a dynamic midfield that’s all you need. Why Darlow is suddenly considered not good enough is baffling.

I think darlow isn’t good enough for the PL, he’s a decent keeper who has serious errors in him. Last season he was starting for a dominant team, next season we won’t be anywhere near as dominant, more pressure which will lead to more mistakes.

If you can’t rely on your keeper who is poor at communicating and has a moment of stupidity in him then it won’t bode well.

To me it makes sense to look at the GK situation, rafa clearly didn’t rate darlow last season as he initially had Sels as his no1.

Was hoping for some movement in the market for us today but not overly concerned, plenty of time left and hopefully we will have most of them in before 1st July.

I think Darlow is good enough in the way that all the other keepers are good enough, and 80% of the squad is also good enough, and that’s good enough to keep us up, but not good enough to achieve what I would assume is a goal of 50 points plus and a top half finish. He did indeed drop some worrying clangers, and he is not yet the finished article.

Actually, I think Rafa could keep the squad as it is up. But obviously we want to do better than that. Upgrades at keeper, centre back, fullback, holding mid, attacking mid, striker and winger are all areas that we’ll surely be looking to bring one in.
