Breaking News – Newcastle Agree Fee For La Liga Defender

The People are reporting today that Newcastle have agreed a fee of £8.7M for Eibar center-half Florian Lejeune, after triggering the release clause in his contract at the Spanish club.

Previous reports had said that Eibar valued their player at £8.7M – now we know why.

We were linked with this player last week and he is a big strong player at 6ft 3ins and was released only last summer by Manchester City, but had an excellent first season in Spain and attracted some top clubs.

26 year-old Eibar center-half Florian Lejeune

But it appears that Newcastle have stolen a march on the competitors and if this news is correct, Newcastle can now talk terms with the player and try to get a deal agreed quickly with Florian and get this lad signed up.

In March,  both Arsenal and Tottenham were said to be interested in signing this player.

Rafa has many contacts in Spain and it seems they have been telling the Newcastle manager how good this 26 year-old has looked in Spain over this last season – and it looks like Rafa wants this player at Newcastle.

He is a very physical kind of defender and seems well suited to the Premier League and as well as defense  he can also play in midfield.

And with Newcastle also apparently close to agreeing a fee with Sporting Lisbon for their 23 year-old center-back Ruben Semedo, these could be the two center-backs Rafa brings in this summer.

But both players have no Premier League experience, which would be a surprise and goes against Rafa’s wish to bring more Premier League experience into his team this summer.

The defender joined Eibar only last summer after being sent out on loan for the previous season by Manchester City to Girona FC, who play in the Spanish second division.

The Paris native has played two full seasons the last two years; he made 40 appearances with 5 goals for Girona and last term he played 37 times for Eibar with one goal.

He was capped 7 times at the French U20 level.

What do you think?

Never heard of him. I would doubt this signing especially as he has failed already in the PL.

I can’t understand how people can say a player has failed in the PL when he has played for teams such as Chelsea and city then been sold. To play at them clubs you need to be some of the best in the world so if a player does not get much game time and is sold then it’s likely they would be acceptable for other prem teams such as us.

    NUFC83 and Hibbitt

If he hasnt played a game in the PL, then you would have to question his suitability.

Personally speaking, I would prefer someone in defence who has proven himself at a decent club and not some cast off.
