Surprise And Disappointment – Newcastle Miss Out On Top Transfer Target

You just cannot tell what’s going to happen in the transfer market and there’s news today that Newcastle’s top center-back target Ruben Semedo, who we were told Newcastle were very close to signing yesterday, will in fact move to Villarreal, with the transfer maybe being confirmed as early as today.

That’s what Semedo’s agent Catio Balde has said today on Portuguese station TSF Radio.

This is what his agent has said:

“We are on the verge of confirming the transfer of Ruben Semedo. It’s probably Spain. I confirm Spain,”

“We are looking forward to closing the deal today. We are working, and yesterday was intense.”

“We are absolutely certain that there will probably be a conclusion today. Ruben was faced with several possibilities.”

“It was in Spain that we found the best solution”  “Until this moment I cannot confirm conclusively. He’s in a good way.”

There was news earlier today that Sporting Lisbon wanted a 50% sell-on fee so we now don’t know whether there’s any truth in the report that was published by Portuguese outlet A Bola.

Rafa Benitez still wants two central-defenders brought in this summer and perhaps Rafa will turn to a Premier League center-back such as Hull’s Harry Maguire as one example.

This is a surprising turn of events and not good for Newcastle, but it Ruben wants to go to Villarreal so be it.

But you win some and you lose some – and now Rafa and Lee Charnley have to move on and we would be happy enough if we can sign an experienced Premier league defender and maybe Frenchman Florian Lejeune of Eibar.

What do you think about this turn of events?

Comments welcome.

Plenty better out there who we will have heard of
Same with Abraham, if you have to think twice about pulling on the black & white shirt BYE BYE

All sour grapes from us now. To me it is a miss for us and I would have liked to see him in black n white. Oh well many more out there. Just hope we go for equal quality and not lower compared to Semedo. Hope Rafa starts getting these deals across the line ASAP. We need to start the ball rolling.

Just catching up again, I take your point from previous, most probably the same fake as I cannot see any club letting that sort of information reach the press before a statement is released. Was just reporting what I found on Newsnow.

It’s also likely that Rafa will have a few targets lined up for each position, and all will be about the same quality I guess, so missing out on one will not impact too much on second or third choice.

I think we could be missing the point with all the targets we were supposedly linked with and not one of them actually joining us. Most of it is pure spec, but some have had some truth in them , and the Semedo DEAL is one that worries me in the fact that he thinks Villereal are a better option than us. fans are saying there are better out there , and that is true, but we dont seem to be able to afford the better options, or we would be trying to sign them, if we were, we would know about it. Its early days i know but already i sense some frustration creeping in with people i know. I hav,nt forgotten our lack or activity in January, and im still not convinced that the leopard has changed its spots.

There’s no way a player and agent choose to go to Spain over EPL. The money for mid level players is all in England. We must have pulled out of the deal for whatever reason, if we were ever actually in.

Just read that Villereal, not Real Madrid, outbid us by a meagre 1m euros, really?. are we sure that Fatman is,nt sticking his nose in as far as his valuation of players is concerned ?

Some people don’t like the cold and wet and having been brought up in sunshine he probably wishes to remain there. Plus, bearing in mind football is now big business, the 50% sell on fee is a joke. You speculate on players in the hope of increasing revenue to further the project. FIFA needs to cap the sell on malarkey at 20% max.
If he doesn’t want to come here, no need to take it personal. His choice, his career; let him make his own mistakes. Plenty other options.

Who we don’t get is irrelevant. Only who we get and sell/release is all that matters the rest is just hot air.

Bobbybee, no need for Fifa to cap it. Market conditions will dictate the sell on fee % clubs will accept.

But I agree, plenty of other options.

I wouldn’t be too worried about this player seeing Villareal as a better option than us in the here and now. They did finish 5th in La Liga last year, will play in Europe next year, and have a chance to push for top 4 in La Liga in the coming season. If he wanted to go to Valenica instead of us, then I would be more concerned. And he also hasn’t signed for Villareal either. His agent is all over the place with “probably”, “confirmed”, “can’t confirm conclusively.” Anyway, looking forward to the end of the week and the opening of the window on Friday/Saturday. HWTL!

If NUFC had already agreed a deal as has been reported, then the selling club accept another bid, and or the agent / player push for more money from NUFC or they will move to another club, then really there is nowt we can do about it. should we renegotiate a new deal costing us more money?

I think the club is right if they say F@ck you, go somewhere else then.

It’s all if and buts, but that is the messages coming out, we had a deal done and then they moved the goal posts, maybe trying to add that 50% sell on clause.

What I have read today states, A deal was agreed for 14 million, with a 20% sell on clause, and a clause that covered NUFC selling him to a rival team. That deal was allegedly agreed by all parties.

The a did comes in allegedly from an un-names Spanish club offer 1 million more, then rumors started stating the deal was being held up over a clause of 50% sell on fee.

Drawing my own conclusions (and they may be wrong) they moved the goal posts to try and extort extra money out of NUFC, so yeah holding us to ransom.

I notice that the agent is careful not to mention the name of the Spanish club, could all be a bit of fiction.

    Who knows?

As for this bloke. It sounds more like the agent is getting a bigger cut from Villareal than Newcastle. NOT what the player wants. It seems we’re putting too many of our eggs in one basket – this prat and Abraham – and leaving it too late for alternatives – which has happened year in year out under Ashley

We probably resorted to the old tactics of messing about and moaning over a few extra pennies and another smaller club came in and took advantage of our penny pinching as usual….Thats if we were even interested in him in the first place, dont know what to believe these days. Wouldnt be surprised if Mike Ashley has invited newly free agent Mike Williamson back instead to save a couple of bob

And this is what I said last week, until they are photographed with a Newcastle shirt at St James who gives a shite. We have been linked with half the world, so all stories and I hate it when we read Newcastle have delegates over there right now closing up the deal. You see, nothing closed up on this one, maybe Newcastle pulled out saying the 50% clause is stupid. If that’s the case fair play Newcastle United for not getting ripped off. Yes I do hope we actually sign someone this week, a player a week would work out.
