Pepe’s Papa Wants This Outcome For His Son – And Soon Too

It looks like the relationship between Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina and the Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has gotten a lot worse, after Pepe has rejected a two year extension to his contract at the Italian club.

Pepe’s contract runs out in a year and we covered that story this morning with it now looking like Napoli may have to sell their goalkeeper this summer.

Newcastle’s Rafa Benitez, his former manager at both Liverpool and Napoli is anxious to sign the 34 year-old for Newcastle.

But the father has spoken today in the Italian press and seems upset the two grown men are arguing and cannot just sit down at a table and sort out their differences like mature people do.

Miguel Reina has freely admitted the relationship between his son and the President are somewhat strained, but he wants them to sort it out and quickly too.

This is what a sensible Miguel Reina has told Italian Radio station CRC today:

“I know something happened between the President and Pepe,”

“They have to stop being kids and sit round the table, look at each other face-to-face and solve this issue.

“I swear, as a father of five children, that I don’t know if he’s had another offer or not. That’s his agent’s job.

“What I can tell you is that Pepe and his family are very happy in Naples, I swear that to you, on my family’s honor.

“There’s just this conflict with the President, and that has to be solved immediately, for the benefit of all the parties involved.

“This situation has surprised me, because the relations with the club have always been very friendly.”

There’s some real common sense coming from Pepe’s papa, but unfortunately he wants his son  to stay at Napoli and sort out his differences with the President.

We’ll learn shortly what kind of impact the father can have on one of Newcastle’s transfer targets.

If Pepe takes a lot of notice of his father Rafa Benitez may need to look elsewhere if he really wants that experienced goalkeeper at Newcastle this summer.

What do you think?

Starting to get fed up of these ‘closing in on…’, ‘somebody coming in with a late bid for….’, ‘wants to speak to other people….’, new problems for proposed Toon transfer because of location away from home, heat, father’s interventions, changes in the boardrooms…’ etc. stories.
Semedo gone, Abraham hanging fire, Le Jeune being courted by other clubs, changing our mind on Gibbs, being mucked around by Reina etc. etc.. If they are all non starters why not stop wasting valuable time, ditch the lot and start again? You can’t tell me there aren’t other worthy alternatives.

What’s to say, other than conjecture and rumour, that we’re in for any of them?

I don’t think they are non starters, most players worth their salt will have a few offers, hopefully anyway,if we simply say sign for us or else we’re off, we’ll probably miss out on targets we actually want then we could end up buying players that are further down our list and perhaps not as high quality. If we’re patient and bide our time we might actually get a few of the players that Rafa wants, we might not get them all. there will be a bit of cat and mouse with other clubs too as they wait and see who else will come in for their players. I don’t see us working at break neck speed to off load mitrovic, Hanley,, mbemba or anyone else for that matter. have Gouffran and Anita signed for anyone else yet? no. why? because those players will be waiting to see who comes in and makes offers.
