Newcastle Signing Of This Player Now Reported To Be Imminent

There’s more news today that Newcastle are now very close to signing 26 year-old Eibar defender Florian Lejeune, with news recently that the Spanish club’s Sporting Director Fran Garagarza is now saying he’s resigned to losing the center-half to Newcastle.

So that looks straightforward enough, but we know it’s not because Arsenal have entered the race and we recently lost out on Ruben Semedo, who decided to move to Valencia at the last minute after Newcastle thought they had him in the bag – so to speak.

So you never really know with the transfers, but there’s no doubt it would be very good if Newcastle can get another player through the door this early in the summer transfer window, which doesn’t open officially for business until July 1st.

Deals can be agreed for players now, but they will be officially signed on July 1st, when the next financial year begins.

Newcastle have triggered Lejeune’s £8.7M release clause in his Eibar contract  and Lee Charnley and team are now talking personal terms with the player and hos agent.

The Northern Echo is reporting today that Newcastle hope to close the deal this weekend and that would be very good.

Newcastle are also said to be confident of getting the deal done, even though Arsenal have contacted Eibar about the player and there is also an interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

As a reminder this is what Eibar Sporting Director Fran Garagarza said recently about how strong Newcastle’s push was for Florian Lejeune:

“I’m not very optimistic,”  “I see it difficult for Lejeune to stay.” “We are worried that Newcastle are taking very strong steps.”

Let’s hope Garagarza is right and we can sign this very good player before the weekend is out.

That would be great and also give us some much needed momentum in the transfer market.

sing in the corner: Riviere’s contract is a mystery. Transfermarkt have Riviere as being out of contract this summer, which is what I originally remembered, then Wikipedia state he signed for 4 years – giving him 1 year to go… other searches bring up media articles stating he signed fo 6 years – leaving him with 3 years to go.

There is only one person to blame for the club taking punts on cheap players, and the owner signs the cheques and sets the framework for the budget. It it no surprise Riviere didn’t work out really, he cost about half of what a good Championship striker would cost. As some say “buy cheap, buy twice”.

Believe it when I see it. All this ‘closing in’ on players must leave them feeling claustrophobic – that”s why we can never get them over the line. Let them breathe and we may see them putting pen to paper.
As for Abraham – what is going on there? Ring him and give him 24 hours to make up his mind or we’re going elsewhere. Why should we be messed about by a young’un? Surely he’s not the only good striker available?
