Rafa Sets Sights On New England International Defensive Target

There’s news in the Independent today that Newcastle are interested in signing 27 year-old England International center-back Chris Smalling, who will be allowed to leave Manchester United in the summer.

Chris has been at the Red Devils for seven seasons and he’s just the kind of experienced Premier League center-back we need at Newcastle for the coming season.

The other Premier League clubs said to be interested in the player include Everton and West Ham United.

Newcastle interested in 27 year-old Chris Smalling

Smalling still has two years left on his contract, where he’s reported to earn £100K/week at the Red Devils.

With Jose Mourinho signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica this summer, Chris will be further down the pecking order at United and it’s probably best for his career that he makes a move to a club where he will get regular playing time next season.

Chris will also be keen to make the England World Cup squad for the finals in Russia next summer and he needs to be playing first team football to get into the England squad.

Newcastle are still to bring in any new center-backs this summer, with the news that Rafa wants to bring in two center-backs with the likelihood that both Grant Hanley and Chancel Mbemba will then be sold this summer.

Newcastle are said to be close to signing 26 year-old Eibar center-back Florian Lejeune for £8.7M, which is the fee in his release contract at the La Liga club.

Chris moved from Fulham to Manchester United back in 2010 and he has since played 243 times for the Red Devils with 13 goals.

153 of those appearances have been in the Premier League and he’s scored 7 league goals and Chris also has 31 England caps.

Chris Smalling would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, if we can get him through the door.

What do you think?

Everton seem determined to Hoover up what they can from the Merseyside – Manchester conurbations.
With many players living in the Cheshire area they can move clubs but not move home.
    It’s a consideration for some I suppose.
How does Smalling compare to McGuire ?

Neither are good enough imho, there’s a reason England are rubbish and Hull were relegated, we need players on their way up not over the hill….whether they have prem experience or not is immaterial unless it’s a keeper and I would rather have Clark than either of those two ,get Bemba up to speed with the language and what he needs to do in certain situations and were good to go.
Clark is better in the sir and commands the box better than most, mbemba has the pace to press up the pitch and get back, bring in Delph to sit just in front of them and Reiner to sweep up behind them ,jobs a goodun.

You do remember what team we signed Clark from, right? Being part of relegation doesn’t in itself mean there’s something wrong with you.

I think it’s much more of a question how you fit in our defensive block and what partnerships you can forge, backed up by your ability of course. Getting the right defender is a very tough thing and the manager has to predict how they will look as a unit rather than simply how outstanding the player looked on TV.

As long as Rafa is able to get some of his first choices I’d be more inclined to trust his judgment than get excited over reputation and fluff.

As for Mbemba I really like the bloke but if it is true he isn’t following tactical instructions we can forget about his age, experience, ability, all the DM discussions. He’s rotten and his slot in the squad is better served by another player. I’d take an inferior player over someone who doesn’t do what you tell him to, particularly in a Rafa team!

WWSBRD ( IF YOU PRAY HE WILL COME ) Posted Yesterday: From yesterday: Is it me or are we missing something here, if players like Chris Smalling and Olivier Giroud are available why are we not trying to sign them. Both players have the Prem Exp and can do a job for us, NO?
Its getting a little frustrating that we haven not really signed anyone, Astu was on loan with a clause that we could sign him so no real deal done this summer. Its starting to feel like most Newcastle transfer windows, we scout the players for all the clubs in the Prem, why is it once we find one we are thinking about signing we don’t shut the hell up about it. Every time its seems like we look at a player the rags get that info and then Everton, West Ham etc are now also looking at them. Its driving me nuts again, once again summers with the Black and White are causing headaches. I like Chris Smalling, for years he was there number one center back. Your not the number one CB if you really shite. Lets get this deal done, I know Chris would love the fans and the manager. No for tomorrows news that we are now signing Giroud from Arsenal.

“Smalling would be okay”?? Are you guys serious? Smalling would be excellent. Good solid professional with bags of experience and in his prime. He would be the perfect defender for us.

Are people really moaning at signing Smalling? He’s one of the best and most experienced centre backs in the PL. IMO he wouldnt even consider signing for us and he would cost close to £40m based on United paying £30m for Lindelof who is unproven. We would be lucky to sign someone like Smalling but unfortunately he’s well out of our penny pinching league at the moment. I would be surprised if we sign any players at £15m+ this Summer. Massive club, small ambition

I can’t believe people are actually complaining about signing Smalling. Thank god they don’t make our transfer decisions.
