Newcastle have been linked with lots of players this summer already and one of them we really like is 22 year-old Calum Chambers of Arsenal, who started his career at Southampton and last season he played on loan for Middlesbrough in the Premier League.
The 3 times capped England International only turned 22 in January, but he has already made 82 Premier League appearances and he looks a very good player in the making at right back or center-back – and in fact he can also play as a holding midfielder
If Rafa Benitez were to sign him for Newcastle then surely the Spanish manager can bring out the best in this talented youngster?
22 year-old Calum Chambers of Arsenal – good player
The Chronicle is reporting that Newcastle are unwilling to pay the £15M asking price for the player, but at some point we have to start paying out the (big) money so we can bring in the players we need.
Rafa Benitez, as we reported earlier today, has to bring in at least one new full back to challenge DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett, with the likes of Jesus Gamez, Massadio Haidara and Achraf Lazaar having no future at the club.
And two of our other full-backs, Vurnon Anita and Kevin Mbabu, have already left the club.
The fact that Rafa wants to bring in up to two new center-backs this summer is also a reason why Calum could be a very useful player to have in Newcastle’s back-line for next season, with Grant Hanley also expected to leave for a Championship club this summer.
It seems like it’s a waiting game at the moment before Newcastle make the plunge into the transfer market, but that will likely have to come sooner rather than later, with pre-season training due to start two weeks tomorrow.
Calum was brought though the famous Southampton Youth Academy and he has so far played 59 times with 3 goals for Arsenal, before he was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough last season.
He played only 25 times for the Saints before he was snapped up by Arsenal in the summer of 2014 for a fee reported to be close to £16M with performance-related add-ons.
The youngster made his full debut for Southampton back in August 2012 in a 4–1 win over Stevenage in the second round of the League Cup when he was just 17 and he made his full England debut against Norway in September.
Maybe Newcastle could even arrange a season long loan deal for Calum for next season with an option to buy next summer?
What do you think?

Comment #41Hibbit – Ed’s mentioned an asking price. You’re reading too fast! ?
Jib – we aim to please…….. ?
Vask – of course we’ll make signings but there’ve been so many reported links, imminences that’ve so far come to nowt. We’ll just have to wait and see but maybe the readies aren’t yet to hand. Frustrating but as others have pointed out, other clubs’ve done nothing yet. We’ll be ok, I’m sure. ?

Comment #45I was hoping we would be in for Hirving Lozano, specially with Rafa at the helm and as it seems we need wingers. It now seems PSV Eindhoven is about to sign him for 20 million Euros. Bummer.

Comment #46On the topic of pre-season:
I would they did a Huddersfield, with a few days survival training on an island in Sweden. Winning games is the best way to expand the fan base.

Not sure what the delay is, as others have pointed out clubs haven’t made massive moves in terms of numbers joint them but we are already miles behind these clubs in my humble opinion, not including Brighton or Huddersfield. We look to others and say they’ve done next to nothing but in reality we are already 2 or 3 players short of them clubs in terms of ability and we’ve let Anita go which technically makes us weaker than when we got promoted.

Re: Hirving Lozano
Recently saw him play for Mexico against USA in a World Cup qualifier. Speed and quickness to burn! He was even giving fits to Yedlin, who is no slouch in the pace department himself. Plays mainly on the left wing, but can play either. Would have been perfect for us! Man City was also apparently interested in him.

Comment #53If we make a net loss in the transfer market, will the asking price then go up accordingly. It’s hard for me to believe that all this potential sale stuff won’t be impacting on transfer activity. The old Ashley shuffle. Be warned Rafa, he has form. He certainly has that. I think you need to be all over this. No trust or latitude. Force his hand.
