There’s news from Spain today and it looks like Newcastle have finally reached an agreement to sign 26 year-old center-back Florian Lejeune from Eibar.
Here’s a tweet from Spain that basically says Lejeune will be going to Newcastle in the coming week as Eibar will also sign forward Samu Saiz.

26 year-old center-back Florian Lejeune
This is the translation of the above tweet:
NEWS | #Eibar will announce the signing of Samu Saiz this week. And Lejeune goes to Newcastle.
The Chronicle also have a good report out today on the current situation with Lejeune, as the deal has dragged on for some time now.
Apparently Newcastle wanted to do the deal with two payments for the fee, which is not usually the way the club does its transfer business, and Eibar refused that and wanted Newcastle to pay the full £8.7M release clause up front.
Newcastle have now agreed to pay the full amount this week and we have already agreed personal terms with the French center-back and the player will be doubling his wages at Newcastle.
The Chronicle are reporting that Eibar are to hold a press conference in the coming days to clarify the situation and we assume it will be to announce that Lejeune has signed on for Newcastle.
We hope it will be to announce that Lejeune has signed on for Newcastle.
🙂
Here’s what Eibar Sporting Director Fran Garagaza had to say on Lejeune:
“Lejeune’s situation is one of alarm. I’m not worried, but busy.” “We are calm, there are movements and to see if they occur.”
Italian powerhouse Roma were looking to come in and sign Florian and it looks as though that quickly forced Newcastle’s hand to pay in full and do the deal quickly this week.
And here is some information from El Diario Vasco – a Spanish morning daily newspaper based in San Sebastian – about the Lejeune situation, as reported in the Chronicle today:
“Newcastle have decided to reverse their position and everything indicates that in the coming days they will make the payment in full to prevent third parties from interfering in the operation.”
“It should not be forgotten that Roma, whose new sports director is the ex-president Monchi, also hinted interest in signing Lejeune, although the four million allegedly offered was rejected.”“Newcastle persuaded the player very quickly, with an offer for four years that doubles the salary he perceives in Eibar.”
“But they have been much more reluctant to accept that they had to pay the release clause Eibar had asked for.”
“The days of Florian Lejeune as player of Eibar are numbered.”
“The club has done everything possible to try to convince the player to stay, but they cannot compete with the tantalizing offer of Newcastle.”
“Newcastle are now prepared to pay the 10 million euros clause in his contract in full, having tried to make a payment in two parts – something which the Barcelona club flatly refused.”
So it does look as though the deal will go through this week and he will be a great signing for us.
Let’s hope there are no more hitches and he is signed fairly quickly this week – it will be a huge breakthrough for Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Repost – This 2 payment thing simply sounds a way to give Rafa a bit more spending power this window, also, it’s not that far from spend up front so seems like a compromise by MA

Comment #2Lejeune sounds like an astute bit of business. But Pepe? Admittedly I know not much about him but the little I’ve seen and read suggest he didn’t set the world alight playing for Algers in France.

Comment #3Well sounds like the journos weren’t lying after all with the players we’ve been linked with, except Sunday papers which are full of bs.
Don’t know much about this fella or pepe but happy to see some movement in the market at long last.

Does anyone know if we are using last years again?
I’ve renewed but not entirely sure if I’m waiting for new in the post or just using previous!

Comment #13Wasnt a deal supposed to be announced other week for this guy though? Or has he been considering better offfers from more ambitious clubs like Forest Green Rovers like all the other 1367484 players weve been ‘close to signing’ so far this Summer. Early days but i’ll believe any transfer talk when the players are holding the shirt up

Comment #14Budge123 – I think I read somewhere that there are going to be new ones issued. However past experience of this is they don’t always get them all out before the start of the season so you are normally allowed to use your old ones for the first home game at least – so don’t throw your one away yet!
I have had a letter plugging the Magpie Mover which I notice has gone up from £20 to £30 – quite a steep increase when you consider there are 4 less home games!

Comment #15kc2012 – if you bothered to read the article – terms were agreed with the player quite quickly, it is wanting to pay in instalments that has delayed the deal!

I reread my letter and it says new ones issued but yes I’ll hold on to the old one.
The Magpie mover is a big increase but I think standard tickets have gone up so still a big saving and saves messing on with change and tickets whilst a Metro pulls in!
Can’t wait for season to start and it’s still what 7 weeks away!

Budge123 – Yeah I’ll still get a Magpie Mover – I did notice it covers home cup games – I can’t remember if it used to or this is new?

Comment #25@hailworashley – Not seen much of Lejeune but his highlight reel suggests hes strong as an ox, really hard physical player… Not sure Williamson was that strong or physical? Reminds me of a budget Pepe from what I’ve seen.

Comment #26Blaydon-Toon – Ibiza still posts but I’ve never seen torq for a long time. I think toondownsouth took the huff and is now on another blog (.co.uk but I maybe wrong).
To answer your question I think it will be harder to get tickets – I’m not sure what the membership costs but it might be worth it because you can buy before they go on general release.

Can you apply online/by post for a season ticket, or do you go to the box office?
I’ve seen stuff online saying there were queues outside St James this morning….

Comment #30The advantages of the long term deal coming home to roost now. I signed the ten year option and this season I’m paying less than I did at the time. Prices were frozen, but we got a ten percent reduction when we went down which is also frozen. So I’m paying ten percent less than I did eight years ago, or however long it’s been.
For anybody who knows they’re going to go to games regardless, these deals are well worth signing up for.

Comment #37Bobbybee – Yeah I’m in about the 4th year of mine – the only thing I’m not sure about is can they increase the price back to where you started? i.e. the price when you signed up – probably in the small print somewhere. The only thing I’ve noticed is I’m still paying the same DD as the end of last season but that was an adjusted value a few months after they reduced the ST. So it will have to increase a bit such that the right amount is paid by the end of the season.
