Newcastle Reported Confident Of Making Forward Signing This Week

It may be difficult for Newcastle to get one of our transfer targets through the door with the news yesterday that Manchester City are now interested in signing Nicolas Pepe of Angers, who we tried to sign in January.

The latest fee that’s being reported for the player (there have been many) is €12M which is around £10.4M and that’s not cheap for a player who is untested at the top level.

The 22-year-old 6 times capped Ivory Coast international made 33 appearances in Ligue 1 last season for Angers and he looked a very good young player.

The news is that Newcastle are willing to pay £10.4M for the player as are Watford who have also joined the race for the forward.

But the news in the Northern Echo today is that Newcastle are said to be confident of being able to persuade Pepe to join the club and of course we do have Rafa Benitez as manager and he should be a big draw.

And it’s a good question as to whether Pepe would consider signing for Manchester City since the Manchester club signs a lot of young players.

But it seems that very few make it through to the first team and most of them are loaned out to get first team playing time.

It’s very difficult for young players to push their way into the City first team picture with the club ready to pay out big money to bring in ready-made stars.

It seems that Newcastle are now going to make their final push for the player we even tried to sign on loan in late January.

We’ll just mention there was also news over the weekend that Nicolas would prefer to remain in France and that Lille were now the favorites to sign the player, so we’re not sure of the real situation with the player.

You never really know what’s happening behind the scenes with these transfers, but if we can sign this player it looks like Rafa rates him as a very good future prospect.

What do you think?

Yeah the first domino to fall soon by the sounds, then we will see a little flurry of movement. Mbemba to go if LeJeune comes in?

I was surprised that with Lejeune deal the sticking point was that we wanted to pay in instalments whereas they wanted the release clause amount up front. According to Ed we always pay ‘hard cash up front’ – apparently not!

Probably a revised way of paying, no doubt Rafa will have given a powerpoint business case as to why its in our best interests to do so.
I reckon if Lejeune comes in it will be for Hanley, if we get another cb Mbemba will be gone too.
Hope your doing ok Ed, keep on fighting, staystrong

Just noticed Jib’s comment on the previous blog – paying in instalments seems to be a Rafa/Spanish thing.

This 2 payment thing simply sounds a way to give Rafa a bit more spending power this window, also, it’s not that far from spend up front so seems like a compromise by MA

And what would be the point in selling Mbemba exactly? Arent we buying to add depth aswell as strength to the squad. We dont need to sell anyone if Ashley is actually giving Rafa the amount of money thats been mentioned. It’s going to be a very difficult first season back so we’ll need as many options as possible.
