There’s news from London that former Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero has agreed terms with Chelsea and passed a medical test yesterday and the Premier League Champions are expected to announce his signing as soon as today.
That means Newcastle have missed out on signing Caballero, who we thought would have been a decent enough short-term signing for the Magpies, but it looks like it’s not going to happen.
The Argentine has been signed by Chelsea to replace Asmir Begovic, who has moved to Bournemouth and Caballero will become the new back-up goalkeeper to top Belgian International Thibaut Courtois.
35 year-old Willy Caballero – passed medical at Chelsea
With Chelsea having qualified for the group stages of the Champions League next season, it’s expected that Willy will get some first team football in Europe next season and he’ll also play in the FA Cup and League Cup.
It seems the Argentine preferred that to coming to Newcastle and potentially being the starting goalkeeper for the Magpies.
Rafa Benitez still wants an experienced goalkeeper brought in his summer and we still have a chance – a slim chance – of persuading former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to join us from Napoli.
The 35 year-old former Liverpool goalkeeper would like to stay in Italy and is trying to arrange an extension to his contract there, which currently runs out next summer.
It seems like Rafa wants more experience in the Newcastle defense for next season, back in the Premier League.
However, we still have a number of good goalkeepers in Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow, Tim Krul and Matz Sels who is expected to leave Newcastle this summer, either permanently or on loan, after only one year at the club.
