There was news only yesterday that Newcastle were unwilling to pay the £17M Benfica wanted for their 28 year-old central midfielder Andreas Samaris, so we thought that was it on Samaris and Newcastle would move to another one of their targets in central midfield.
But Portuguese outlet O Jogo are reporting the two clubs are still trying to negotiate a deal for Samaris and say Newcastle have offered €15M (around £13M) for the 28 times capped Greek International with Benfica turning down the offer.
They report that Benfica still want the full €20M for their players – which is around the £17M that was quoted yesterday.
28 year-old Benfica central midfielder Andreas Samaris
It’s difficult sometimes to know exactly what the truth is when you read some of the these reports and this is a good case in point.
It’s simply not clear if Newcastle are still interested in the player, especially when much cheaper alternatives such as 29 year-old Fernando from Manchester City are available for around £5M and the Brazilian has Premier League experience too.
O Jogo go on to say the current situation could be resolved in a matter of days and certainly Rafa Benitez and Newcastle fans would like that – one way or the other.
With some of these deals we should probably either do it and pay the money or end the negotiations and look at some of our other targets – since we seem to have lots of targets lined up due to Rafa doing his homework thoroughly.
We already have an article out saying the coming week is going to be fairly crucial for Newcastle to bring in some new faces and have a breakthrough in the transfer market before next Monday when preseason training starts.
We are still confident that can happen, but we’d be very surprised if one of the players coming through the door is Andrea Samaris.
But you never can tell.
🙂
What do you think?

Players we are certainly in for or missed out on are:
Semedo if that’s how it’s spelt.
Abraham
Lejeune if that’s how it’s spelt.
The rest we are uncertain on, like I say I agree that most are bs but some do carry weight. Rafa is hardly going to come out like arry does on players as that will give the game away for certain.
I have plenty of faith in Rafa but none whatsoever in the rest of the regime. Rafa can have all the targets he wants but it’s up to the tea boy to deliver and his boss to sign the cheques. That’s where I have very little faith. Like it or not rafa is a tiny cog for Ashley who he will happily replace for a cheaper option

Comment #51Our Toon, how do you know we were definitely in for those players? The club’s said nothing that I’m aware of. I’ve read the press blurb but never seen anything come out of SJP that says we were in for those players. Maybe Abrahams before his wages went up, but nothing about the other two. Where did you get that from? We may have been and I just missed it, but so far I’ve not heard anything from the club about targets. Unnamed sources doesn’t work for me personally. I’ve heard to other view, from agents and reporters, but they tend to lie! 🙂

Yes it makes sense for an agent to lie after his player has signed for another club, it also makes sense for the club to lie like Lisbon about nufc offer.
It must have been a rafa lookalike that went down to see abraham in person
Lejeune family members and friends must be lying as well as his club about us being in for him.
If it’s just a report in the papers and nothing to back it up I’m inclined to disbelieve it, however these 3 links are significantly more than just paper talk

Rafa is more than a tiny cog that can be replaced at ashleys whim
You dont pay a top manager 5 mill a year if you dont rate him.
Ashley wants at the very least to add value to his club and he has seen that the yes men dont add value even when allowed to spend.
It would be utter madness not to back him now when even the haters are willing to give him another chance (mostly)
The cost of not being in the prem is massive and the gulf is getting bigger each year.
He has to back rafa and that could be where new shareholders could be an option if he does not want to pump more cash into the club.
To replace him with another yes man would be the last straw for many fans and fattie aint that daft.

I hope you are right but we all know Ashley. If the story’s are true that people are interested in a take over of the club why would Ashley spend money now? He has the tv money for this year and sjp is sold out every home game. Sponsors are in place. He can’t make any more money this year. He doesn’t care what league we are in next year if he ain’t going to be here.
If your selling a car for 10 grand with definite interest from people. You don’t spend another 5 grand doing it up to still sell it at 10 grand. He’s a businessman.

Comment #67I’m not worried at all, Rafa wanted signings before pre-season. This has not happened and so he has expressed frustration as anyone would.
No doubt this D***y M**l fiasco is a ploy to get the club to give the horse a lash and I wouldn’t be surprised if we sign three next week.

Did I say the papers said it’s true so it must be?
I’ll try to make it clear and hopefully you’ll fully read what I’ve written rather than distorting it.
I don’t believe paper talk but I do think it has merit when the selling club and players agent back up reports as was the case with the Lisbon lad. As for the French lad at leganes his club have pretty much stated he’s off to us and the player himself has stated it, as well as his friends and family. These reports have merit unlike others.
Tell me what player we’ve bought in the last 5 years when the club or manager have come out and said we are going after….. apart from nzogbia which was a last minute disaster and attempt to appease fans I can’t think of any.

Ashley needed rafa to get back up straight away so had to pay him the 5m. Rafa has done his job and Ashley doesn’t need him as much now which is why I believe he’d be happy to replace with a cheaper option. Hence the comment of tiny cog, it would be a disaster if he wasn’t allowed continue though

Comment #74Chill Winston! Lots of passion on this site but lots of negativity too!
GK Darlow, Elliot, Krul won’t get us relegated but mid table quality at best
CB Clarke, Lascelles, MBemba, LEjeune same as above
FB Dummett Yedlin Sterry not yet ready no one else of quality at club, relegation quality in depth if they are fit all season lower mid table at best
CM Shelvey, Hayden, Colback Diame need another player and if Shelvey is out then relegation beckons need two players minimum
Wings Ritchie Atsu and Aarons have potential, if Ritchie gets injured again relegation beckons
Number 10 Perez, Diame, dejong relegation if we don’t get a new number 10 or the three improve even though I rate Perez
Strikers Gayle, Mitrovic, Perez if we lose gayle for some of the season or don’t get a big improvement from Mitrovic then again relegation dogfight ( presume Murphy will go )
By my reckoning we need to secure lejeune, need at least one fb if not two, at least one winger of quality, 2 centre mids a defensive and a creative, a new number 10 and a new striker, 8 players required for a good team. If we don’t get 6 of these at least then we will struggle particularly if we get injuries.
I’m holding my breath for the next two weeks…..

Comment #75I would have lejeune cb, Calum chambers young can play across defence worth 15 million in today’s prices, the Leeds lb on a free, Fernando from city, cairney for number 10, back in for townsend or another unknown but quality winger and a new striker for big money. We haven’t had a great striker since Shearer and at NUFC that is unacceptable ( although gayle and Mitrovic can still become that striker. That is 65 million cost and then Diame, Murphy, gouffran, Haidara can leave, maybe 10 million back leaving 55 million spent, then 20 to 25 million on a striker, that’s the 80 million of the promised land and if we did that we will be a premier league team for at least the next 3 years. It makes no financial sense to fanny around and risk relegation! What strikers do people like bas dost seems the best one we’ve been linked with in my opinion
