Newcastle’s Second Deal Of The Summer Extremely Close To Completion

Eibar Sporting Director Fran Garagarza has given a positive update on Lejeune’s move to Newcastle, but the deal still seems to be going at a snail’s pace and we’re not sure why.

Both the Chronicle and the Shields Gazette are reporting that progress has been made and the deal is closer to being completed – so we suppose that’s good news.

But we will be a lot happier when Florian Lejeune actually signs for us.

26 year-old Florian Lejeune almost signed

And there’s a quote in the Gazette from their Sporting Director Fran Garagarza which he made yesterday:

“Right now all the roads point to England. The English are showing their interest and we fear that he will not continue with us.”

There seems to be some penny-pinching going on with Newcastle in the way they pay the £8.7M (€10M) release clause, but why it’s taken this long points to a problem with the way Newcastle negotiate deals – seemingly always to save a buck.

It’s very rare that Newcastle wrap up a deal quickly and that has to change in the future and we’re sure that’s what Rafa will be telling Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley today – otherwise we can lose out on too many deals.

The deal is said to be very close to being completed – closer than a couple of days ago.

So who knows maybe we can even get this lad signed in the next day or two.

Certainly Florian Lejeune looks a good player and he’s coming to be a first teamer on Tyneside, so he will increase the competition for places in central defense.

And he is reported to be extremely keen to join Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez.

That’s good.

What do you think?

I’m baffled as to why this deal has taken so long. Rafa is trying to build us into a top Pl club… Yet here we are yet again haggling over a defender from Eiber.

Even by NUFC standards this deal seems to be taking forever!

OK. This is getting silly. A player is moving to serie A, and suddenly, he gets linked with interest from NUFC, just so they can say it’s “a blow” to our transfer dealings. I’d never heard of this bloke until 5 mins ago. What a load of sh1t!!

Every year we (as do other clubs to varying degrees) face the problem of moving out no longer required players. Those with contracts ending are obviously easy but those on comparitively high wages (to other European leagues or even Championship) always stick.

It is a problem not only because of wages to T/O ratio and budgets but as Freddie Shepherd put it “there are only so many pegs in the dressing room”

This is perhaps the worst year for a club coming up to compete with the silly money floating around existing PL clubs and the consequently inflated prices and wages but I trust Rafa can guide us through it. It is easier for likes of Man city and Chelsea to juggle incomings and outgoing players but more difficult for us. I am sure Rafa would prefer to clear the decks first rather then be left with a bloated squad as he is unable to easily shift many of those he doesn’t want but it is something that is difficult to control.

July approaches I am confident based on on last year that we will see some breakthrough but it may still be slower than all of us and Rafa would like.

Well i’m unsure how I missed it, as i’ve seen all the other 124539861856451238956 players we have been linked with. Maybe he just got lost in all of it 😀

i was wondering if you could like as many times as you want when logged out (like you can vote multiple times on the polls) , but it doesn’t seem to work. It must be a glitch

Maybe if Theresa May had used wordpress to run the election, she wouldn’t have end up with a hung parliament 😀

I’m sure this deal was extremely close to completion about four weeks ago same with Gabriel Pires, Aboubakar, Abraham, Acquah and every other male that owns a pair of footy boots, drinks water and eats custard bloody creams between the ages of 16 and 87 aswell. I’d honestly be surprised if were genuinely even interested in this guy. Is Rafa even in charge of anything at the club transfer wise or is that smug little hard boiled egg head still in charge of transfers?

It was “close to completion” a month ago
Then the Spanish club started being unnecesarilly awkward
There is a buy out clause. How the hell can they keep delaying it ?
