We don’t know whether Siem de Jong, who was on loan last season at PSV, still has a career at Newcastle but how he plays in preseason will go a long way to answering that question.
We hope Siem can come through because he’s a good technical player who could do a job for us in the Premier league next season.
But his younger brother Luuk found it difficult at Newcastle and Siem has not found it easy since signing on for us three years ago from Ajax for £6M, where he was the captain.
But of course he’s also been hit with lots of injuries although he was fairly injury free last season while on loan at PSV.
28 year-old Siem de Jong – on loan at PSV last season
Siem did quite well at PSV where his brother now plays – and he scored 6 goals in 23 total appearances and helped PSV to 3rd place in the Eredivisie with 76 points, 6 points behind the Champions Feyenoord.
His brother Luuk had a poor time of it last season scoring only 9 goals in 37 appearances, after he had scored a massive 32 goals in 43 appearances the season before.
The two brothers scored about on goal in every four appearances last season for PSV.
PSV did not want to sign Siem at the end of the season and if he doesn’t make it into the Newcastle first team squad for next season (we hope he does) – then he will probably be loaned out again for next season.
Siem has played 26 times with two goals for Newcastle and his contract at the club still has a full three years to run.
Here’s the tweet Siem has put out:
Back at the toon, preparing for a good season. Need to prove myself now! @NUFC pic.twitter.com/3zd9Utdl1c

Sagan has been chucked out – Cavendish not optimistic on continuing hurt the same shoulder he hurt when coming off his bike when the tour was in Harrogate a couple of years ago.

Comment #87When you look at signings like SDJ it’s not surprising the money is tight. We paid £6m for him on a 5 year contract so that’s about £10m total for zero return. He’s not the only one and the worst is we can’t even offload them because of the wages they’re on! On the other hand we’ve made £25m profit on Le Sulk and a good profit on Wijnaldum but that doesn’t seem to count!

Comment #89has the football world gone bloody mad ❓
Leicester have made a £20m bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney, according to the Daily Mirror.
The report suggests Watford have turned down Leicester’s opening offer but Craig Shakespeare’s side are ready to make another offer after making the 29-year-old a transfer priority.
It is thought Deeney could be allowed to leave Vicarage Road for £25m .

Comment #91I would like to see sdj have a cracking season.
He has had terrible luck so far
Only thing that worries me is making sure we arnt banking on him incase he is prone to be off sick.
If theres any doubt after pre season then he has to go.
Keeping him could free up cash we could spend on a goalscorer..
I wish him the best of luck.

Comment #92I think we should buy 6 more players
3 bargain s like atsu and Florence
A left back less 10 million
right back for less than 10 million
A creative midfielder less than 10 million
A word class winger 30 million
2 world class striker 30 plus million each
So this would be my team for next season taking into account players already signed
Keepers
Krul
Darrow
Elliot
No need for new keeper imo
Right backs yedlin gamez chambers
Left backs dummett Lazar ,Robertson
Centre backs Florence Clark lacelles mbemba and Hanley
Imo there is no need to get rid of any centre backs am pretty happy with 5
Defensive midfielders saivet colback and
Creative midfielders Jonjo Diame pires

Comment #98To be fair to SDJ his injuries haven’t exceptional circumstances. I mean his eye injury and then a random collapsed lung that even the doctors said was a freak event and will never happen again! How unlucky can the poor man be!
Rafa shipped most injury prone players out last season and SDJ had the task of proving he could play a full season. He did that so now I hope he gets his chance. He is a very good player imo.

I like the lad and his heart is in the right place but he takes one for the team too often to be blameless imho.

Comment #106SDJ is a class act but only issue is his injury record, it’s a big worry. I hope the worst is behind him and he can get a good ore season with good run of games. Very intelligent footballer, good finisher and good movement, he doesn’t need pace.
If he gets a good pre season in then it’ll be a big tick both confidence wise and in terms of a proper no10. Good luck to him

Comment #107Happy 4th of July Ed! Hope you’re able to enjoy the fireworks down there in NC. We’re off to the neighbour’s house for a barbecue but I’d swap the nicest steak for a Dickson’s saveloy dip or a Greggs flat Cornish pastie any day of the week.
I’ll be celebrating the first of (hopefully) many signings for the Toon in the next few weeks.

Comment #108Grosicki would a very good signing, direct wide man who can cross, quite like the look of him.
Unfortunately transfer fees will continue to rise with new money coming into the game with the likes of China and with tv deals going through the roof for the likes of the PL, this has an impact globally.
20m these days is like an offer of 7m about 4 or 5 years ago. I wouldn’t look at prices with the likes of deeney. The only ones who haven’t realised what the new footballing world is us, king of the penny pinch. The sooner we realise and wake up the better, otherwise we could well end up as a yoyo club.
Bottom line is Ashley needs to go and this window with spending prices proves it more than ever!!

Comment #112Why do I keep seeing fans lost positions like full backs, CDM, St and wingers as priority positions when it clearly obvious where the massive hole is in our current set up! We need a cam/no10 as rage plays 1 st and 1 behind we cannot start this season with Diame. If we had a player with creativity who could carry the ball and pick a pass in that no10 role last season we would have walked that league. We need a no10 more than anything. I also think this will be Aaron’s breakthrough season but don’t hold much hope for SDJ tbh. Hope we sign that polish lad on the wing also will improve our squad massively.

Ashley, who was exposed for paying warehouse staff effectively less than the minimum wage, is alleged to have paid former Sports Direct boss Dave Forsey £1m a year on top of his “official” £150,000 salary as “a side payment so as artificially to cap the wages of other staff”.
‘Jeff Blue, a former Merrill Lynch banker and former strategic development director at Sports Direct, said in his evidence that the side payments may explain why Forsey appeared happy to work at the company despite officially being one of the lowest-paid bosses of a publicly listed company in the UK.’
Strangely enough, Lee Charnley earns the same Dave Forsey, and in similar circumstances, being one of the lowest paid MD’s in the PL.

Comment #116Siem keeps the ball moving forward quickly, ideal for perez ,Ritchie, Atsu and Gayle….played as a 10 with Shelvey getting the ball to him from anywhere or arriving into the box late to meet crosses from Ritchie/yedders or Aaron’s/Dummet.
We just need a very good dm and Sweeper keeper
I see we’ve been reported to put a lowball bid in for bas dost……lowball of €40m , hardly a lowball offer but way below their €60m release clause……it’s getting interesting ladies and gentlemen
