There’s news coming out of Portugal today that Newcastle United have made a club record £35M bid for Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost, who has been a long term target for Newcastle.
The 28-year-old striker has been in terrific goalscoring form in his first season at Sporting and scored a whopping 36 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions for the Lisbon club.
The report is in the Jornal de Notícias and the bid was lodged a few days ago, according to the report.
28 year-old Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost
£35M is more than double the £17M club record fee we paid to Real Madrid for Michael Owen back in August of 2005.
Dost could be great in the Premier League and his 6ft 5ins frame makes him a great header of the ball but he’s good with his feet too and a physical player.
So Bas Dost could offer Newcastle an attacking threat from free kicks and corners and he could score the goals, but he could also knock the ball down to other strikers who can put the ball in the net like Dwight Gayle.
Bas Dost was a striker target of Newcastle a couple of years ago when he was still at Wolfsburg and the news at that time is that we bid £9M for him but for whatever reason he did not join Newcastle.
While at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga for four seasons from 2012 and he scored 48 goals in 117 games so he can certainly score the goals.
In his career so far the 28 year-old has scored a whopping 161 goals in a total of 321 first team matches.
Last year he joined Sporting Lisbon for just €10M (£8.7M) and the Portuguese club then put a huge buyout clause of €60M into his contract – which we assume nobody will be willing to pay.
But if this news is accurate it shows Newcastle are indeed willing to pay out big bucks for good players and may even explain why we didn’t want to pay the full £8.7M up front for recent signing Florian Lejeune from Eibar.
What do you think?

Comment #166Expat, are you really that thick? YOU came on having a dig at me you psychopath. I was talking football with like minded people, but you had to come on giving it large. These are FACTS you clown. You’re the one who started the insults. Honestly, you can’t make this crap up.
What’s your football contribution? One line about one player. That’s it. The rest have been digs at me. Ha ha! You tossers are unbelievable. Your football nous is so limited, all you can offer is insults. The lot of you Centipede morons.
But please, enlighten us. Show me where I even bothered to talk to you scum before you started in on me. Go on gobshyte, show us.
You can’t can you. You never can because it’s always you clowns who starts. And if it isn’t me, it’s somebody else.
The reality is you’re lonely. You’re lonely for a reason pal, work it out. It ain’t hard.
Football blog. I was talking football scum, you butted in, not me. Idiot.
Still, you’ve done it again. Shown yourself up for what you are. A lonely man with nobody to talk to except your human Centipede cohorts.
Anyway, I’m done here. Came on to talk football but as usual, the know nowts can’t discuss football so resort to insults. Then cwy like a baby when they get them back. Ha ha ha! Pathetic nobodies. Figures.
Catch ya’ll later footy fans. A good craic ruined again by the usual suspects.
Don’t get all excited Expat, you’ve lost, not won. I just get bored with you easily now. You offer nothing. Zilch.
Of course now you’ll make an effort to talk football, but it won’t last because you know sweet FA. You really are that predictable.
Later lads.

Mr Tuff calls me a Zenophobe
but
I show no hatred or fear of someone’s country or origin
Partisan with regard to Tyneside or Newcastle chauvinist would be much better.
The remarks I addressed to ToonMauritius had nowt to do with his country.
If a lad from Nottingham came on the blog and inferred that with NUFC he’d drawn
the short straw when he and his mates were playing “picky the team to support” he ‘d get
short shrift from me as well.
The Toonites who have moved out the area – sound
The people who studied in the region – fine
Those around the world who saw the Entertainers and got the bug – smashing
But those knobbers who drew us out of a hat without even seeing us – nahh

Comment #178Jib, where was the bit where Mauritius said he drew the short straw? I believe what he said was that his mates who supported the easy-to-follow clubs were deriding him for his loyalty to NUFC, who he supported although there had been no sign of success.
Your observation is as specious as it is distasteful.
Job well done! Keep it up – that reputation of yours was hard fought for, don’t let it slip.

Picking a team at random happens all over the world. Here in Oz, British soccer is becoming more popular with each passing year and the number of supporters who have never been to the UK but follow a particular team for some bizarre reason or anofher is widespread.

Comment #199On Bas Dost: Diário de Notícias, however, claims it was an offer coming through an intermediary, preparing the situation for Newcastle to pay €40m for the striker. But as all the other outlets say, it was turned down.
The newspaper claims that even if Newcastle choose to activate the release clause, Sporting will still try to convince the player to stay. That’s how much they want to keep the Dutchman who scored 35 goals for them last season.
Could the intermediary be the Barnes bloke? Still hoping we spend this kind of money on better players!!
@expatmag, I’d take the darlow for £5m and bring in Pepe for £3-4m
