Newcastle Could Be Close To Surprise Signing Of Spanish Playmaker

The Chronicle reported that Rafa Benitez was after a playmaker who had recently played in La Liga and we were linked with Brentford playmaker Jota (full name Jose Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo) in mid-June when Sky Sports reported  the Newcastle manager was interested in signing his fellow countryman.

And with Sky Sports reporting the player will not be played (risked) in the club’s friendly against Aldershot Town tonight because they are expecting a bid from a Premier League club, maybe Newcastle are that club who are close to a deal for the 26 year-old?

The other Premier League clubs said to be interested in signing him are Everton, West Ham and Huddersfield Town.

26 year-old Spanish playmaker Jota – plays for Brentford

Jota was on loan at Spanish club Eibar during almost the whole of 2016, but returned to Brentford at the end of last year – maybe the Newcastle scouts watched him during the first half of last season while they were scouting newly signed French center-back Florian Lejeune, who played at Eibar last season.

Jota was simply brilliant when he returned to the Bees in January and in the last five months of the Championship season Jota seemed to come alive and scored 12 goals and laid on five assists in 21 total appearances.

Jota now has just one year left on his contract, but if Rafa is close to signing him then the manager must think he can make the big step up to the very tough Premier League.

Jota was signed by Brentford in the summer of 2014 from Celta Vigo on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee – and that contract included a one year option, which was taken up by the Bees.

In August of 2015 he suffered damaged ankle ligaments in the opening game of the season against Ipswich – and was out of action until that December.

In January of 2016, he left on loan to Eibar until June 2017 due to personal reasons; Jota was unsettled and seemed to be missing his family and that was the reported to be the main reason for his return to Spain.

He has now played 74 games for Brentford with 23 goals and 9 assists – and while at Eibar on loan a couple of times in 2013-2014 and then in 2016 he played a total of 57 times and scored 11 goals with 3 assists for them.

But he’s played excellently this year in the Championship and for just £8M and with ready cash looking tight at Newcastle, he would seem a very decent buy for us if Rafa really rates him.

It would be good to get another player through the door soon and maybe Jota is the player the Chronicle were referring to?

What do you think?

    And welsh,
I’m sure Rafa’s stellar career won’t be judged on one season in the PL after being let down by a notoriously bad owner of a football club.

In all fairness we have been linked with our no1 targets for months for this season and a lot of them we have missed out on, only time I will be impressed is when the club fork out 20, 30 million for a player and not some player no ones heard of, as for signing a couple of players on loan, fcuk me we are really showing ambition.

Rafa prove me wrong and spend 35 million on Bas Dost, you had that kind of money to spend on players with all your clubs, prove you are in charge of the transfers.

Persuading Rafa to stay is a huge sign of ambition. When he’s had enough we can start slating our lack of ambition imo.

    Welshie
I do think everyone at NUFC was caught unawares by the way the increased PL money has been a game changer.
There are some jaw-dropping prices being asked for pretty run-of the-mill players
I think we are still in the transfer window silly season and in 4 weeks or so sanity will return.
I know you ain’t the most patient guy on the planet – you’d best go off on holiday for 5 weeks .

IMO it would be better to loan Darlow to Boro, as goalkeepers improve with age. If he knocked the major mistakes out of his game he would be a good stand by.

Of course we need to be patient, it’s just that we all say these same things every window and the majority end with little to nothing happening.

Normally I get over it quickly but right now this squad is not PL ready. We signed championship level players to get us out of that league and are now stuck with them because we don’t seem to be pushing to get higher quality players.

Who is our Right back now? Anita played there for most games, he is an average CM and poor RB and now we don’t even have him.

I don’t believe any of the rumour websites because they rely on quantity over quality to make money so I presume they know nothing of what the club are actually doing.

So, I once again, reluctantly, fall into the same old perennial transfer window trap of hoping there’s one coming soon…..

Lets all be patient and not worry, every season we have the same start to a window and end up signing great players and really building a strong squad said NO Newcastle fan ever (under MA). Its Deja vu all half decent players sell for shite loads now so we are left looking for average players with release clauses. When will the fat pr1ck learn?

As we stand we have easily one of the weakest squads in the Prem and no doubt will be spanked right back down to where we came. If MA wants/needs us to stay in the Prem we have got to chuck a boat load of money at the squad. Hopefully Charnley is actually doing his fcuking job and trying to offload as much of the deadwood he can too so many poor players taking a hefty pay check when in reality no where near good enough.
