Newcastle Switch To New Goalkeeper Target – To Bid €15M

It looks like Newcastle are interested in signing 24 year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola this summer.

Rafa Benitez is keen to bring in a new first choice goalkeeper this summer, as he probably offloads both Karl Darlow and Tim Krul and there’s news in France Football today that Newcastle are close to making an offer of €15M for the French U21 International.

The report is that Rafa Benitez has followed the progress of the player since the Frenchman’s time at Villarreal in season 2015-2016, when he played 37 times on loan for the Spanish club and played extremely well.

24 year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola

The news is that Areola is now Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper target and Rafa is considering submitting a €15M (£13.3M) bid for the player, who has played for all the French youth sides from U16 through U21.

The 24-year-old Frenchman played 27 times for the PSG first team last season and he is said to be a very calm goalkeeper who is good in the air, commands his box  and an excellent shot-stopper.

Alphonse Areola also has first class leadership skills – always something that Rafa seems to look for in players he wants to sign for Newcastle.

Areola was born in Paris and joined his home town club back in 2006 as a  13 year-old and has been there ever since.

He’s had season long loan spells at Lens (2013-1024 – 36 appearances), Bastia (2014-2015 – 39 appearances) and Villarreal (2015-2016 – 37 appearances) so he has already played 141 first team games in total.

He seems like a very good young goalkeeper who stands 6ft 3ins tall and could do very well in the Premier League.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I honestly believe that rafa controls football
    Penfold does money
    Ashley does nowt.

He also wont add more loans but will allow them to spend out they want on whoever they pick.

That suits rafa and thats why he has stayed

If we stay up this year we should be able to crack on and rebuild or club.
Its going to take a lot to catch up with the big four but we can do it.

Ancient, and quite right too!! Although I doubt Rafa would even consider a 31 year old being worth blowing the budget on. Rooney’s about that age isn’t he? I think they paid Manure ten million for him to go to Everton, coming off the Lakaku price.
The mackems are after our Murphy according to talksport. He’s been there before so why not.
Gray is on the radio now, bragging about how he turned us down to stay with the mackems. More fool him!

Jib, I was thinking more along the lines of £25 million being most of the transfer budget.

You are in for a rude awakening if you believe Benitez has £80+ million to spend this summer.

Think everyone’s getting increasingly frustrated about transfers, as much as I want new players I don’t want us overspending and wasting money for the sake of it, we need to chose the players carefully.

Imo this would be ideal by September 1st:

Pepe Reina – offers immense experience and leadership and still very much a good goalkeeper.

Carl Jenkinson – Left out of Arsenals pre season. we need someone to give Yedlin competition, Gamez not good enough, sterry loaned out.

Kieran Gibbs – also left out of arsenals squad. Pace, can get up and down along with experience. Would be an ideal signing.

Andreas Samaris – Rafa clearly rates him. May be pricey but could be worth it, need a solid holding midfielder

Lewis Holtby – Could be on the cheap and looks like an ideal Rafa player. Creative, can play no.10 or central mid, but still offers work rate and defensive contribution.

Jacob Murphy – had a decent season, looks like he’s got good potential, boyhood toon fan, very young and pacey but may cost a bit.

Kelechi Iheanacho/Batshuayi/Gray – 2 of these 3 please if Mitro is to leave. All proven goal scorers. We need someone who will guarantee goals

Mags, aye, that’s the way I see it. He basically did the same with McClaren remember, but that didn’t turn out too well. Rafa’s a different kettle of fish though and he’ll pick his choices, with each one having a specific role to do.
I think the reason last season wasn’t as entertaining as some would have liked it was simply because the players weren’t able to follow his instructions to the letter. The better the player, the better he should fit into his plans.

I wonder how most people rate the current squad in comparison to the one that got relegated.

Benitez’ point average in the PL with the squad from 2 seasons ago, would have averaged out over the whole season, to put Newcastle above Mourinho’s Chelsea – as opposed to being relegated.

I still think we will spend 50-100 mill
With players sold and what we had in the pot.

I did not renew on back of it but i do think its what we need.

Compaired to other clubs around us its nowt mega
Other clubs will spend more on 1 player than we will on 5-6.

I imagine Jacob Murphy isn’t best pleased with Norwich right now. A chance to play under Rafa at his boyhood club, he must be wishing he hadn’t signed that latest contract now. Still, Norwich probably need the funds as this season the parachute payment will decrease. They may have to bite the bullet and juggle the money to improve their overall starting eleven. Twelve million would seal the deal imo. They could buy two decent championship players for that I’m sure.

I would have both of them
Both will go up in value but both are a risk for wor first 11 and will need time to settle.

Maybee next year we can get players who dont need to jump into the first team but not yet imho

Oh yes, how a refreshing pint of cool lager top helps decision making. However, it doesn’t help everyone make crucial decisions.

In Ashley’s case, he’s obviously needed an extra half in informal surroundings to help him make the important, business-critical decisions that have shaped the Club. Sharing a pint with them led to the crucial appointments of Llambias, Wise, Jimenez, Kinnear (twice) and Pardew.

    Bless his little cottons…

Still expecting a net spend of £50m give or take 5 either way, as per the figures I did.

    Townsend
    Gibbs
    Reina
    Hernandez
    Kovacic

    That’ll do nicely.

What a shame Ashley’s generous side doesn’t come out when he is drinking. A billionaire, and I bet he still wakes up with a pocket full of lighters and the money from his round still in his wallet.

Ancient, too early to be making comparisons imo matey. We haven’t really bought anybody yet so we won’t have a clue what the starting eleven will look like.
Not sure about the 25m mate, I reckon there’s more than that. Old Rafa have accepted that amount?

How much did we pay for murphy ?

No way should he be loaned even if he only raised 3 million we should sell him

I would not sell him to the unwashed either hes worth a chance at a good championship club who want to get to the prem.

I can’t help but feel there will be a lot of ‘brinkmanship’ hoping prices will become more sensible towards the end of the window. If this is the case then transfer deadline day will be absolutely manic!

Mags, come the end of the window clubs will want to offload players like you say. I can’t believe the prices of some of them. Pickford was a fine example of crazy. 30m for a keeper that helped take them down? Makes you wonder how they got relegated when they constantly claimed their two best players were one to score goals – Defoe – and one to keep them out. Must’ve been a proper pile of shyte between those two if that was the case! 🙂
