It looks like Newcastle are interested in signing 24 year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola this summer.
Rafa Benitez is keen to bring in a new first choice goalkeeper this summer, as he probably offloads both Karl Darlow and Tim Krul and there’s news in France Football today that Newcastle are close to making an offer of €15M for the French U21 International.
The report is that Rafa Benitez has followed the progress of the player since the Frenchman’s time at Villarreal in season 2015-2016, when he played 37 times on loan for the Spanish club and played extremely well.
24 year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola
The news is that Areola is now Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper target and Rafa is considering submitting a €15M (£13.3M) bid for the player, who has played for all the French youth sides from U16 through U21.
The 24-year-old Frenchman played 27 times for the PSG first team last season and he is said to be a very calm goalkeeper who is good in the air, commands his box and an excellent shot-stopper.
Alphonse Areola also has first class leadership skills – always something that Rafa seems to look for in players he wants to sign for Newcastle.
Areola was born in Paris and joined his home town club back in 2006 as a 13 year-old and has been there ever since.
He’s had season long loan spells at Lens (2013-1024 – 36 appearances), Bastia (2014-2015 – 39 appearances) and Villarreal (2015-2016 – 37 appearances) so he has already played 141 first team games in total.
He seems like a very good young goalkeeper who stands 6ft 3ins tall and could do very well in the Premier League.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #202Wouldn’t be interested in Slimani – don’t see him as any better than Mitrovic and the same type of player.

Can we not just cut out the middle man and sign Ikea Nachos?

Comment #204Mark, that was a pure scam from supermac mate. Don’t fall for it. 🙂
Ron, not seen too much of him other than the world cup where he looked dangerous. Very quick like I’ll give him that. Took his goal well also. If we had him and Traore up front nobody could catch them!

Comment #213Liverpool consider Sheyi Ojo needs
1) A season in the Championship to toughen him up
2) A guarantee of regular games
Ergo
Boro get him for a season not NUFC

Comment #217Ahh I see, not Norwich paying 8M for our Murphy. Us paying 8M for their Murphy. Doh!!!! That might be a decent deal for both if the fee doesn’t become astronomical…..

Comment #218I see no benefit in loaning our Murphy to that Championship club down the road. Another year and he’ll be worthless really, so best get whatever we can for him now imo. Do them no favours like they’d do to us.

Comment #221Does anyone ‘get’ Formula One? I’m a car person myself, but watching fast cars in a procession just doesn’t do it for me. Like the motor cycle version much more, with loads of overtaking. I only ask because apparently Silverstone might be taken off the circuit and I can’t say I’m bothered either way.

Silverstone is a self sufficient track unlike the rest of the Calender .The likes of Baku and China have millions pumped into them which is why it’s become unsustainable

This is a difficult one
He’s scored 50 odd goals for Algeria against some pretty tough opposition
Over 2 Seasons at Sporting Lisbon 40+ goals in 80 odd games including CL games.
In Portugal he was managed by Jorge Jesus
At Leicester where he has looked poor he is managed by Craig Shakespeare who I believe is living off Claudio Ranieri’s groundwork
Under a decent manager (Rafa) he would likely thrive
However the Foxes paid a reputed £29 million for him last Summer (last day of the window) I wouldn’t like NUFC risk that sort of figure.

Comment #227Bobby – The F1 brand is what they are planning for football. Elite moneyed franchises from around Europe with added super rich Chinese club and American club added in for good effect. Think ” World Club” league with Barca, Man U / City, Arsenal , Real Madrid , PSG, Monaco and others in the same style as Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull etc. Matches played in super stadia around the globe so you’ll see Real Madrid v Man Utd played in Shanghai and New York.
Ashley can’t live with that level of money so he needs to sell. If he does we might end up as part of that elite. Otherwise we’ll have a good chance of being top of the Premiership also rans.
