Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter about the Jacob Murphy potential deal – and there are various estimates as to how much the lad will cost.
It looks like £10M will not do it – if Newcastle bid that today – which is expected.
But there are indications that £10M with £2M add-ons if Jacob does well at Newcastle – could get the deal done, but Norwich are also reported to be digging in their heels on the price.
Surely we cannot go through another long drawn-out bartering war with another club and come away with nothing?
Yes – we suppose it’s possible, but at some point Newcastle have to bite the bullet and pay the going price for a good young player who Rafa wants.
This has all been painful so far – the way Newcastle are negotiating – it’s the old (stingy) Newcastle in action.
It’s worth paying an extra (measly) £2M for Jacob at this stage of the summer just to get another player into the club!
We should remember we’ll probably get £125M next May from the Premier League and at some point Newcatsle must look at the bigger picture, rather than simply trying to get a good deal for every single transfer.
Here are some typical comments about Jacob Murphy who was a Newcastle fan when young and has Tyneside roots.
Hope we don’t lose out on this Jacob Murphy deal now #Nufc

@mrjakehumphrey do you think Jacob Murphy is the real deal? Should #nufc hand over the money requested?

It’s refreshing to hear that Jacob Murphy wants to play for #NUFC not use the club as a stepping stone. #NewcastleUnited #JacobMurphy

Biggest thing about Jacob Murphy: he’s light on his feet but can body up against a defender. Not a lightweight. I’d take him. -alex #NUFC

This one looks more and more like Rafa drawing his line in the sand. Penfold, get him or else! The lad wants to come, has turned down at least one other club and is prepared to put in a transfer request. There really are no excuses on this one. At 22, bags of potential, likely to double in value in years – fits the transfer policy perfectly.
£12 million + add-ons, 10 + Murph, saving on the shirts, too. The 2 can just swap tops when we meet.
Easy, I’ll be off to Norwich later to drive the lad up here, for his medical.

Why are we all getting so excited about buying a winger ?

Comment #7I think this could be the moment of truth in this window, and possibly in our short term future as a club.
We need to get this lad Murphy in.

Comment #8From what I’ve read he was a bit hit and miss last season. Would prefer Grosicki in from Hull but signing both would be nice. For me the wingers is one of the most important positions to strengthen, look at the difference it made in the Prem when we finally had a half decent winger in Townsend.

Seems so! We all must have been very bad in a previous life. Didn’t Dante have a special level in hell for Toon fans? Hmmm.

Aye, if management screws up this Murphy deal then heads should roll!

Comment #11We need:
at least 1 winger, possibly 2
cover at full back, unless the present incumbents are up to it (Hairdryer, Lazaar, Jesus, Sterry)
2 midfielders unless Colback, Diame and some young ones are going to be back up to Shelvey and Hayden.
A No. 10 unless that’s De Jong, Perez, Diame
A prolific forward unless that’s Mitro, Gayle, Murph, Arma
Getting them in, in any order.
Go Penfold, tiger!

Comment #14There has to be someone amongst our large squad who Norwich would take off our hands as a make-weight in a deal.
Someone like, say, Colback, would do a good job for them in the Championship.

Comment #18Since logging off last night to this morning, what exactly do you think has happened? Dunno about you lot but I’ve been asleep. Strangely enough, chances are all those at both clubs have been too.
Let’s all take a deep collective breath and look at the clock first.
Now exhale and give the parties involved time to get to work. Any decision is unlikely to arrive imminently.
My first guess is the obvious one – Norwich won’t budge until Jacob makes a transfer request, which means they get all the money and he loses his fee.
Then they’ll back and forth with add ons etc. Give them chance to work it out.

Same thought often crosses my mind.
Was born in 1969 last year we won anything .
Worse still since leaving home at 24 almost every time I have returned home and gone to a game we loose .
Convinced I am jinxed.
Flew back for both Fa cup finals lol
Promise if we make the next final I will stay well clear

You asked why other managers shouldn’t be fuming at the lack of activity and I’m surprised that you, visionary that you are, haven’t realised that the clubs you referred to have good Prem squads unlike ours – assembled for the Championship!

Comment #22Since we have been out of the PL the fees for average players start now at £20m, we now have to shop for players in the always injured bracket or useless. We can`t even attract players on loan so what do we do?
I believe we should have kept SammI A as the 4th choice winger instead of paying £10m for Murphy and use that money towards getting a striker.

Comment #23Can’t blame Norwich for wanting as much as possible. Its a sellers market as we’ve seen by the unbelievable extremes gone to by Portuguese clubs

Comment #24If NUFC fail to get Murphy from Norwich for this relatively small fee, we will be a laughing stock. If you are prepared to spend £8million you have to rate him so pay up ffs. This is how we missed out on Dele All who we chased for months and he went for £5mil !
Sometimes I yearn for the days of fat Freddy !
