This Newcastle Transfer Target Close To Signing For Italian Club

We always thought that 30 year-old Liverpool holding midfielder Lucas Leiva would have been a good signing for us, but he’s now close to being sold.

News today that Rome club Lazio have agreed a fee of £5M with Liverpool for the Brazilian midfielder.

The deal has not gone through yet, but Sky Sports are reporting the fee has been agreed but personal terms have still to be agreed and then Lucas would need to pass a medical.

Lucas Leiva – close to signing for Lazio

Rafa Benitez signed Lucas for £5M in July of 2007 from Gremio and he has been at the club for 10 years now having played a total of 346 games with 7 goals and 21 assists.

We thought Lucas would have been a great buy for Newcastle and after 10 years at the club it had been thought the Liverpool club would let him leave as a free agent as a reward for his great service.

That would have allowed Lucas to negotiate a really good deal with his new club.

We’re not sure if Rafa was ever interested in signing the player, or whether he may have approached Lucas and the played did not  want to come to Newcastle.

He would have given us great experience at the back and the 24 times capped Brazilian Intenrational could play in a number of different potions too.

Lucas also had a very good season last term for the Reds,  playing 31 times – 24 of which came in the Premier League – and he scored one of his seven goals for the club – and yes – he went crazy.

Something that happened less than once a year at Liverpool.

But it looks like he’s gone.

Comments welcome.

liam has come on in leaps and bounds both physically and mentally much stronger and his concentration has improved dramatically, every chance of a 1st team game or 2 in the near future would not let us down if called upon

Sorry but he won’t have more chance of breaking through here. How many youngsters have we actually brought through? How many youngsters get game time when there is no injury crisis? Everton have a decent track record of bringing through talent, this summer of spending shouldn’t take anything away from that.

    hibbit,
If that’s the case, would you think that a left back is less of a requirement? Dummet, Haidara, Lazaar, and Gibson seems a lot. We’d need to offload 2 probably to bring someone in there.

I don’t think Everton will be to flustered into selling, as a club they’ve hardly thrown money around over the past 3 or 4 years. They can take a bit this season but it does come against the back drop of tv revenue and big investment from the Iranian bloke they’ve got on board.

They have Europa league so the likes of Barkley and McCarthy might be useful for them in that competition as it’s another avenue into the CL

If Everton carry along the same path mate, Then they will go exactly the same way as Chelsea and Man City.
Buy all the young talent , Loan em back, then loan em back out again until they sell em on much like Ake and Chalobah.
Or buy em, And let em rot or ruin them like they did with Sinclair.
If Ash ain’t gonna splash the cash, Then we going to need all the young talent we can bring through buddy

    A thought….

Ashley left Rafa and Charnley to deal with transfers last summer.

Ashley, no doubt prompted by Carr, probably wouldn’t have been happy with the older signings.

For whatever reason, the signings Rafa expected in January didn’t happen.

I therefore suggest that as Charnley now has to run proposed transfers by Barnes, Ashley’s fixer and thus, Ashley is now indirectly involved in transfer spending.

If that is the case, so much for his commitment to keeping his hands off transfer matters.

Could he be using attrition to force Rafa to walk away? I dunno but…..

    .

The sale of Gibson, like putting Darlow up for sale, suggests to me that Rafa’s only funds are going to come from what we can get for players on our books, whether or not they were originally plans for our future.
This can’t be good if it’s right, and surely not the way Rafa would see the future of the club if we are to believe all we hear about his intention to build for the future.

Gibson is a 16 year old on scholarship terms, I’m not sure we will be adding much to any pot if we lose him.

That’s an if though, we don’t know the future.. They might not continue the splurge they have done season after season. Don’t really want to go down the road of what could happen. What we do know though is they have a track record of playing youngsters, we don’t. On another thread I said it’s disappointing that he’s leaving but I can see why since we are a poor club when it comes to playing and nurturing young players.

What has happened in the past with our young players is not necessarily what is likely to happen in the future if Rafa has his way.

I’m not sure if you can compare Darlow and the youth player, he mustn’t rate Darlow and sees Woodman as the one for the future.

Gibson by all accounts is a top prospect. And by losing him is not in the best interest of the club I support ..Nufc

    OT,
I think Everton will look to sell players still. They are still buying and have over 25 players needing to be registered as well as a number of talented youngsters who will be expecting game time this year.

We weren’t talking specifically about what Everton are, the point you raised was you said he’d have more chance of coming through with us which I disagreed with.
Do agree though that we are the losers out of this as the player is considered a top prospect.

I agree they will look to sell but will sell on own terms, I can’t see them accepting knockdown prices at the end of the window. Could always be wrong though but it’s a very risky game to play, wait it out and hope the market returns back to 2012 rather than the animal it has become

Where did he play left back as I’m quite confident he didn’t play there are Coventry or in any of his games in the first team with us? Even in pre season last year didn’t see it or in clips/highlights of reserves.

    Our Toon,
I think they’d accept reduced fees for certain players. The players won’t increase in value by being sidelined, and the cost of wages will start to be factored in as well. Barkley for certain will become cheaper, given he just has 12 months left on his contract there. McCarthy still has a few years left, but given he only featured sporadically last season, the added signings won’t help his chances. Paying his wages and seeing his valuation drop through not playing will likely see them reevaluate his worth in transfer fee terms.

I bet most on here wouldn’t know half the youngsters at the academy.
Gibson has been given a A star rating and one for the future.Yet we are losing him to Everton who obviously see him as a top future prospect.
How many times has Rafa been seen with the youngsters and mentioned how important it is to have a grade 1 academy with top young talent to boot.
And now we letting these go as well.

It’s all looking rather rosy wouldn’t you say

    WW,
A 16 year old who is highly rated and an England youth product. Doesn’t really matter whether people have heard of him, he is one of the brighter prospects from our youth set up, and following Rafa’s comments about developing our own players the other day, this deal seems to be very much against that.

People are probably more annoyed about the thought of it and the precedent it sets than the actual individual himself.

Yeah Barkley asking price will drop as he’s overpriced but can see maybe a spurs paying for him. McCarthy was had injury problems last season hence why he was so under utilised. Barry is a year older and less likely to play as often, I think if they get 18m for McCarthy they’ll let him go. If not they’ll keep hold of him as a back up. As you say though he has time left on his contract

Didn’t even realise he was that young, I do agree that it does send out a bad message that we can’t keep a good of a talented kid. Not a good precedent to set
