Newcastle United have had 24 year-old Bordeaux striker and Uruguay international Diego Rolan as a transfer target for over two years and there is news today that Newcastle may now try to sign the player for a reasonable £5M.
One of the doubts we had with Diego was whether he is good enough for Newcastle because he’s not exactly a prolific goalscorer.
But he looks a good player and if Rafa signs him we have to think he can get the best out of him and that the Spaniard sees something in him that is good for the Newcastle team.
Diego is keen to move to England and it seems he has delayed signing for Fulham, hoping that a Premier League club would come along and it wouldn’t surprise us if his agents had contacted Newcastle.
Diego Rolan – in Uruguayan colors
The Chronicle is now reporting that Rafa Benitez is interested in signing the Uruguayan and for his skills he comes cheap at just£5M and Newcastle must sign some players on the cheap this summer if Rafa wants eight players brought into the first team squad.
We wrote recently how Diego held two meetings in London last week with Fulham, but was undecided whether to join the Cottagers.
Diego moved to Bordeaux from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in Montevideo four years ago last January and he has a decent goalscoring record in France.
Last season he scored 10 goals in 34 games in all competitions and in the four and a half seasons he’s been at the French club he has scored 39 goals in 149 games with 13 assists which is fairly average in the French League.
Rolan’s biggest strength seems to be his versatility, but he can also score goals and he’s a decent enough footballer who made his debut for Uruguay back in September of 2014 in a friendly win against Japan and he now has 23 caps with 4 goals.
Rolan has only one year left on his contract at Bordeaux and could become a free agent next summer, but Fulham have been in the lead to sign the player.
If Newcastle moved for him we think he would simply jump at the chance to join Newcastle United and that’s what we want – players who want to come to Newcastle and prove themselves.
£5M is not a big risk and if Rafa wants him – sign him up!
