Some Newcastle fans have voiced some surprise that manager Rafa Benitez is looking for another goalkeeper for next season at Newcastle.
Last season 26-year-old Karl Darlow had one of his best seasons ever and seems to be improving all the time under Rafa Benitez.
And Rob Elliot finally got over his serious ACL injury he picked up over 15 months ago playing for the Republic of Ireland and played in the final three games of the season.
Rob Elliot – determined to be Newcastle’s number one next season
Rob was our Player of the Season the season before last in the Premier League, and Karl played very well for us last season during our promotion season from the Championship.
So we seem to have two goalkeepers who only want to improve, and both are keen to stay at Newcastle – they want to be at the club.
Rob Elliot has been interviewed in the Chronicle today, and he is not bothered what’s going on in the transfer market and only wants to concentrate on training and trying to become the number one goalkeeper again for Newcastle next season whoever comes in.
This is what Rob said in the Chronicle:
“There are already a lot of keepers at the club, so when the rumors start flying around you can’t really worry.”
“You just have to work hard, take your chances in games, play well and try and try to remind the manager you want to be No 1.”
“You do need to have three keepers and the manager obviously wants to bring another one in. But that happens at every club. It doesn’t change the way I feel.”
“I’ve got to keep working hard and prove myself. I’ve been here a long time and always backed myself.”
“Hopefully, I can get the nod and start playing the way I did towards the back end of last season and in the Premier League the season before that.”
We dare say Karl Darlow is doing the same thing as Rob – concentrating on his training and determined to become the number one goalkeeper next season whatever happens.
We hope Karl stays on Tyneside with Rob Elliot – they are both good goalkeepers and good men who want to stay at the club.
As well as Rob and Karl we also have the extremely promising Freddie Woodman who at 20 years-old will be loaned out to an EFL club next season and should be pushing for the number one position at Newcastle in a couple of years.
Freddie is another player who is keen to stay on Tyneside.
It will be interesting to see who Rafa brings in, but if we were to have a wild guess, we’d say Rafa will sign 30-year-old Spaniard Adrian from West Ham who has some good Premier League experience with the Hammers.
What do you think of the Newcastle goalkeeper situation this summer?
