The Sun is reporting that 21-year-old Spaniard Mikel Merino of Borussia Dortmund is set to sign for Newcastle United and this one is right out of the blue.
The deal is for a season long loan and the report says the Borussia Dortmund midfielder has left the Dortmund training camp in Switzerland and is traveling to Newcastle to discuss the move with manager Rafa Benitez.
In fact, he has been pictured in Newcastle so the move is probably being discussed right now with Managing Director Lee Charnley.
Merino stands 6ft 2ins tall is a holding midfielder so it looks like we will not be signing a holding midfielder permanently this summer – but don’t bank on that.

There will be an option to buy for €7M
The midfielder joined Dortmund in the summer of last year from Osasuna for €3.85M but he has been disappointed to play only 8 times last season for Dortmund and wants to play more first team football this season and he will get that at Newcastle.
Merino is also interesting two Spanish clubs in Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad who are reported ready to pay up to pay up to €10M for him.
GOAL is reporting there will be an option to buy for Newcastle – which we think Rafa would have insisted on – and the option price is a good €7M.
This looks like it will be an excellent signing for Newcastle.
We hope this will be an excellent signing for Newcastle.
