Newcastle Making Good Progress – Mikel Merino Having Medical – 5th Summer Signing Expected Today

Newcastle will be hoping to sign Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund today on a loan deal for next season and it seems like Rafa Benitez will have the option to buy him for £6M next year as part of the contract.

This was like a bolt from the blue yesterday as it was first reported in the Sun and it seems Newcastle were way along in the negotiations and Mikel was even sighted outside the Freeman Hospital in High Heaton yesterday.

Mikel is a talented 21-year-old holding midfielder who only played 8 games for the German club last season and will now get more first team games in the coming season for Newcastle.

21-year-old Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino

He will fight it out with 22-year-old former Arsenal trainee Isaac Hayden for the defensive midfield position and Isaac had a great first season for us last term – when we were promoted from the Championship as Champions.

He will become our fifth summer signing and there are positive signs things are picking up for us in the transfer market.

And they have to – with our first league game being two weeks on Sunday at home to Tottenham Hotspur – who were the Premier League runners Up last season.

Mikel will need to pass his medical today and terms would have been agreed before he agreed to travel to Newcastle and we expect him to be announced as a Newcastle player today.

A big task for Rafa and Lee Charnley now is to get some of our players sold – players like Tim Krul, Achaf Lazaar, Henri Saivet and Manyu Riviere who have been told by the manager they have no future at the club.

And with Newcastle having a good 4-0 win at Bradford City last night with an explosive performance in the second half and two good goals from new boy Jacob Murphy, Newcastle fans’ spirits will be high this morning.

Howay The Lads!!

What do you think?

Interesting to see Nitro given the captains armband. Not quite sure what to make of that. Surprise after a surprise this summer. Just keep them coming 🙂

The signing of Mikel Merino(hopefully) and Manquillo clearly shows poor knowledge media has about our transfer target. Both of them were not even mentioned until a day before their signing.

Morning all, good win last night for us. I’m glad Murphy got those 2 goals, will give him confidence as I’m sure he would have been nervous playing for his childhood team.

What positions would you like to see strengthened now?

A LB, AM and ST would be ideal for me.

Yeah, I think giving the big Serb the armband was an interesting move. Not sure if that was a way to pay a small tribute to him prior to being sold. Or as others said maybe a way to keep his focus. Or as still others said perhaps a way to show him that he is valued despite not starting. Not sure at this point…

“When you are changing division, it’s more difficult and you have to bring more players.

“But we have a problem, which is obvious, which is we already have too many players. We have to move players out if we want to move players in”
There you have it. We need to shift Riverie etc

My priorities in order: a quality #10, a striker (though would keep Mitro!), CM (Shelvey backup), Keeper and LB.

From the highlights, it seemed that even Diame looked quite sharp. I wonder if it was an application issue with him last season, rather than lack of ability. I suspected he was just being lazy. I was calling him Diameobi by the end of the season.

I don’t understand the keeper situation at all, surely Woodman is going on loan leaving Elliott, Darlow and Krul which by the looks of things he is trying to get rid of two of them. Doesn’t make sense

Not sure of Allan as a #10. A CM or DM from what I’ve read. But would be happy with Batman as CF!

Re: #10 Was hoping we would have landed Cairney! 🙁

Surprising to see Rafa giving captains armband to shelvey and mitro – 2 who were labeled as the most hot headed players at the club. I still think we will go for reina – a goalkeeper/captain Rafa trust the most. But to do that we must sell either krul or darlow or both. Atm we have 5 keepers (including sels).

Allen can supposedly play as an attacking mf or as a holding player. Basically is very versatile and can play anywhere in the middle of the park. Batman added a few nufc players as twitter contacts yesterday. Interesting development.

I think Rafa has decided that Krul can no longer play, even as a third choice keeper. Not sure he ever recovered from that ACL injury to be honest.

IF we get reina, I wouldn’t let woodman go on loan. He’d learn more from him than playing for a small club.

I really hope we target a LB next. I think that this a crucial position in the 4-2-3-1 formation Rafa likes to play. Manquillo (and Yedlin) both fit the mould on the right, being able to get forward, beat a man and get a cross in. What worries me on the right is the lack of solid, no-nonsense RB that can slot in for the last 20 minutes to shore things up.
Dummett is a really solid defender. It is the first time in a while that I don’t overly worry when someone attacks down our left. Positionally he is good, decent in the air and strong in the tackle. He is perfect back-up, no nonsense LB. What we need is a Gibbs type of LB. In fact, I think we just need Gibbs 😉
