Rafa Benitez has a lot of contacts in Spain and at Real Madrid – and a player who has been linked with Newcastle over the last 24 hours is Lucas Vazquez, who was a valuable player at the beginning of last season at Madrid but got less playing time as the season progressed.
That was because of the emergence of new young star Marco Asensio – who started to get more playing time as the season progressed and that was at the expense of Vasquez.
The fact that Vasquez could be available comes from journalist Pete Jenson, who says he thinks Rafa could well use his contracts at Real Madrid to try to get Vasquez to Newcastle.
This is what Jenson had to say on 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast as quoted in the Express yesterday:
“I think he’s one of a few Spaniards who might turn up at Newcastle.”
“There is overbooking at Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez does know the club very well.”
“I think winger Lucas Vazquez is another he might look at and that’s one of the advantages of taking Rafa as their manager.”
“He has that vast experience of European football and having been recently at Real Madrid, I think not just Spanish players but Madrid players.”
“That may be a way Newcastle can build this season.”
Vasquez is now 26 years old and joined Real Madrid ten years ago and came through their Academy and has broken through into the first team over the last two seasons.
In that time he has played 83 times with 8 goals for Real Madrid and last season scored four goals in 50 appearances for the Champions League winners.
But if this player does become available there will be some big clubs after him – so if Rafa is indeed interested in bringing him to Newcastle – maybe on loan for the coming season – it’s best we do it very quickly.
We watched Vasquez last season, and he’s an outstanding player who can play in different positions but usually plays on the right wing – he has 3 Spanish caps.
He would be excellent for Newcastle – if we can get him.
What do you think?

Comment #2a journalist thinks the player could become available and because Rafa knows the club well he might end up here. no wonder so many players have been ‘linked’.

Comment #3The story of this transfer window is that the media have, by and large, not previously identified the players we have subsequently bought. This article would appear to continue the trend.
