Newcastle are finally starting to move some of their surplus players out, but it may be coming too late for the club to bring in some of their targets for the summer.
Grant Hanley has made a move to Norwich City for what the Chronicle are saying is only a £3.5M fee.
But even with that, we reckon the net spend by Newcastle so far this summer is only £14.5M – with a gross spend of £37M.
We were talking at the beginning of the transfer window of a net spend of around £70M being available – how wrong could we be?
But we also don’t understand why there is so little money available to spend this summer and Rafa certainly thought there was a lot more.
Rafa Benitez – signed six new players so far this summer
The difference with last year is we were unable this summer to move out players early in the window and have that cash available to spend.
Three players have left Newcastle within the last few days, and two more are expected to transfer out before tomorrow night.
Maybe we will have some money to spend in the January transfer window, but we wouldn’t bet on it.
Here are the transfers in and out so far with three deals still pending – one in and two out.

Comment #43This is the most important two days since 2009. We’ve heard Pardew talk about four or five come in with the pre arranged Anita the only first team signing , seen fictitious last minute bids for Nzogbia, long drawn out negotiations for Gomis that we had no intention of finalising the deal until he became a free agent. We’ve been worn down to a point where we know the season is a write off before it starts. It is an entirely different scenario now though. Rafa has openly talked about shifting the dead wood before we sign players, we seem to have got rid of a good few now, if Ashley doesn’t now honour his side of the bargain we are in grave danger of losing the only person holding this club together.

historically transfer windows have delivered little for NUFC fans
Except under Rafa
Last summer he brought in 13

Comment #46I sacked Sky Sports earlier in the season so at least I won’t have to go through the trauma of another last day transfer window heartache tomorrow. Anyhow, I think the lights will be out at SJP long before 11 PM. The statement has already been formulated and will probably have been handed to the Sports Editor of The Chronicle:
” Despite all our efforts to bring quality players over the line before the deadline closed, we regret that we just failed at the final hurdle” !
Have we heard this before – yes sadly all too many times!
However I am hopeful of at least a couple of loanees.

Comment #47There’s been a bit of talk about how demoralising for players being talked down by Rafa as being promotion-fuel. But when they are ejected and the squad finalised, it’s quite the morale booster to realise you are the chosen ones! Unless of course his team talk against Swansea starts with “well you’re what I’ve ended up having to work with so..”

Comment #50No floppychops arm out the window interviews for you West Lancs, say it ain’t so…..it’s the staple food of transfer window day……that and the lonely sightings of a sky sports reporter bored shitless outside St James park cos we never get anyone in on deadline day, the kids with the sex toys was funny though

Comment #51Yes Jib but sadly only players to just get us out of the Championship & not to prepare for life in the Prem. If Cashley would have invested say another £20M on Townsend and the likes we would have been up by end of March. Now we are having a fire sale to get rid of all those who are not good enough for the Prem & it’s causing big problems apparently. I am a great fan of Rafa who as done a tremendous job with his hands and feet tied together. He will bring players in probably on loan but they are now likely to be other clubs rejects that he thinks he can develop like Joselu

I don’t think MA will let Rafa down at this late stage, what money that’s available Rafa will have to spend the big problem will be getting the deal/deals done before the end of the transfer window. I’m sure we’re working on something atm.

Comment #57I think we will get at least a couple of new players in before the end of the window. Staying calm and relaxed purely because of rafa. If we had McClaren or pards then I would be in a state of panic.
We will have made plans, moves are being made in the market and it wouldn’t look good if Rafa didn’t get anyone in yet he’s away at a fergie conference

Comment #59I like our team. It’s a good team as is. If we get anyone else in great, if not it’s not a big problem. It’s not a league winning side like, but with everyone fit and behaving themselves we should be well safe and pushing on for at least tenth place in my view. I’m really proud to support a team that refuses to pay 70 odd million for one player. Its all a load of nonsense. Football will prevail, not money. It makes me very sad as a football fan to see all the young talent that gets bought and never gets a game. Lets not do that eh. We have a team of great young talent that i’m really looking to watch them playing football for us. If it means leaving the premier league, well then they can just stick that league right up their ……. it’s not about winning or losing, it’s how we love the game. Our game. Football.

Comment #61The fact that Rafa is still here means that either he thinks he can put out a competetive team with what he has at the moment, or he may be banking on a couple of late signings to bolster his squad. Either way if he’s still here on Friday then I hope people will start supporting the team and him as that is what he’s expecting us as fans to do.

Sheepman – it’s the way football is going, you may be proud we aren’t spending 70m on a player but football will not prevail the crazy fees. It’s going to get worse as more money gets ploughed into the game

As it stands 8 out of 10 for getting the Sh@te out of our club
4 out of 10 for incomings and unless things change tomorrow a certain Mr Benitez is not going to be very happy

In a word no, basically I gloss over Jib, he ain’t worth the hassle, but Tsunki is the same for me, he offers very little of value but is always they’re to have a pop if someone steps out of line, now you are different because a debate can be had, as it can with one of your nemesis that being Bobbybee, good discussions I have had with yourself and Bobbybee, but Jib and Tsunki it just never happens, one comment is about all you will get from them and they will then move on to a possible mud slinging match that may be on the horizon.
Having said what I have just said they will either ignore me or for the first time ever make more than one comment, which would be pointless as I won’t take notice of them either way.

that depends were we are when the window shuts if he feels he’s be done over he could be gone on Friday
if it closes on a high with 2/4 decent quality players through the door he’ll get to the end of the season and then revue it
we should have a good idea when the window closes

I’m still clinging to the hope of some quality coming in to the club, But it is a worry we are leaving it so late.
The Gayle saga has all the hallmarks of the Carroll shenanigans again, But hopefully lessons have been learnt.
To be honest mate I am quite shocked at how little we have spent to the point where Championship clubs are blowing us out of the water now

Comment #80Gayle should be commanding higher bids than £15m in this market. £18m minimum.
Whoever gets him would enhance their promotion bid significantly.
Rafa has made it clear he wants Lucas Perez to Wenger. Maybe Perez 1st choice is to be back in Spain, but if nobody there can reach a deal where better than Spanish manager that wants you and plenty of Spanish teammates. It’ll happen I think subject to Gayle leaving.
