More Players Leaving Newcastle To Reduce Wage Bill

After passing his medical at Norwich today, it has been announced that Grant Hanley has now left Newcastle on a permanent deal and moved to the Canaries.

Although the transfer fee has not been disclosed, we’ll assume it was near the £5.5M we paid Blackburn Rovers for him last summer – maybe £5M?

Here’s what was put up on the Newcastle website:

Defender Grant Hanley has completed a permanent move to Championship side Norwich City.

The 25-year-old center half joins the Carrow Road club having played just once for the Magpies this season, in the Carabao Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest last week.

Scotland international Hanley, who joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in July 2016, made a total of 17 appearances during his 13 months at St. James’ Park, scoring once against Queens Park Rangers.

Grant Hanley – now a Norwich City player

We expect Achraf Lazaar to possibly be announced later today as having joined Serie A club Benevento on a season-long loan.

Also, Wolves have stepped in, and they are discussing a season loan deal with Jack Colback who seems very keen to join them.

That loan deal could be announced tomorrow.

That leaves Tim Krul, Sadio Haidara, and Henri Saivet still to be moved out of the players identified as surplus to requirements for the coming season.

And while we could hear something about them tomorrow, it’s doubtful all three can be moved out at this late stage in the transfer window with only just over 30 hours left.

We also need to move some players in – wonder who they could be?

Comments welcome.

Update – the Chronicle are reporting the fee was only £3.5M so if that’s true we lost £2M in one year on Grant, but we had to get him off the wage bill.

Got to give thanks for his services. He sat uncomplaining on the nench waiting for his chance. Sods law would have dictated that had he not been hete Dummet would have picked up his annual injury he stangely avoided last season.

To be fair, we did have too many CBs and I was never really sold on him. Having watched Ireland for many years I always thought Ciaran Clarke would show his undoubted ability and Lascelles’ place in the team was rarely under threat. A solid back up player but it was right to move him on, especially when one also factors in Mbemba’s impressive displays recently.

Tbh whether it is Ashley or anyone else I have absolutely no problem with getting all this deadwood out. They’ve been draining the club for far too long and any owner footing their wages would feel exactly the same.

No I wasn’t talking about the whole squad in general just those who you’d move on ta generate a quick buck. I don’t believe Gayle would ever be on this list if Mitrovic was generating reasonable bids.

The talk of Gayle being available has only popped up seriously from the weekend, so for me that suggests it was never really on the cards.

Aye the wage bill has been well and truly trimmed in the last week, probably even further in the next 24 hours. So it would be a real shit one if nobody comes.

I doubt selling Gayle was on the cards a few weeks ago, but I would say Rafa has some doubts now about his ability to perform at this level and perhaps feelers were put out there to see what, if any clubs, would bid for him should he become available which is probably what has happened.

Mitro won’t generate those fees at all yet is more suited to this level than Gayle in my opinion. If we got £15m and had a replacement lined up then I’d take it.

Making good progress with the Hoy Oots.
For me Krul, Hadaira and Gamez are not really a big problem. They only have one year left on their deals.
Henry Saviet is perhaps the last of the big problems. On a sizable wage but never plays.

Renato Sanches loan deal is close for Swansea. He’s on to much in terms of wages for us but what a loan signing that would be for them.

We seem efficient in selling players.

Why couldn’t we do it for incoming? No one seems to be coming.

Be glad when window closes & will be able to read some reports on football that have a bit of credibility So called sport reporters get an easy ride when window open, name any player add “sources say” or “it has been reported” & they can write what they like with no accountability, Newcastle for example if they signed 10% of players who were supposedly on their way to SJP would have a squad of about 50

Krill is on decent money I think, haidara not so much and Gamez could still do a job for us, Saivet hasn’t looked too bad on the odd occasion I’ve seen him….it’s Diame I would like to see gone, I had high hopes for him when he came but he’s disappointed me

It’s official NUFC are selling club! Yes, we needed rid of the dead wood and 12 have actually gone plus 5 loanees (2 of which we don’t really want back Colback & Lazaar) & so wage bill must be greatly reduced. Only brought in 7 of which Atsu was already on the payroll . With one day left of the window are we actually stronger than last season as a result? – Debatable? Now we are looking to offload our greatest asset of last season – Gayle who got the lion’s share of the goals. Yes we could make a profit of perhaps £8 /10M on him but if we are a serious football club with any ambition at all ,then where are we going to get a proven goalscorer for £15M who will keep us in The Premiership. Realistically we are not & we are going to get the old chestnut of a statement from the Club come Friday morning i.e. ” We tried extremely hard to bring quality players to the club but just failed at the final hurdle” We are currently 3/4 good players short without any further departures. Mr Ashly we need two quality strikers, a playmaker & back up for Shelvey (as he will serve several suspensions before the season is out). Metro is a loose cannon (blatant elbowing when game was won – not acceptable under any circumstances). We can not afford to offload Gayle without decent replacements and time has almost run out. Fully expect Rafa to sadly have gone by Jan 2018. Mr Cashley please sell up!

Well done Mr Mike Ashely, its been a very very sussessful transfer window for you, very little money spent on new players, and a lot of players out of the club, iam sure Mike is a very happy man tonight as he sits down to drink his bottles of wine valued at 3,000 pounds a bottle, he must have lots and lots of wall paper now he he. To all Newcastle fans, the best and most loyal fans in the country, for gods sake wake up and smell the coffee, this man has been making a mug out of you for 10 years now, as that old saying goes, you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you cant fool all of the people all of the time, he is laughing at those amazing and loyal fans, mark my words Rafa wont be here much longer, i hope iam proved wrong, Rafa is a very intelligent man, as well as being a world class manager, he is also very profesional and ambitious, and is an honest man with great integrity, he is the total opposite of Ashely, we all know the words we could use to discribe Ashely, enough is enough. HWTL.

Don’t go with this ‘lets get them off the wage bill’, it might reduce the weekly outgoings, but it does not seem to have brought a lot of real cash into the club in the way of fees etc. which is really what we need. The PL seems to be operating on loan players at present (apart from the big 6) and although we seem to have done OK in that department up to now, we have also missed out on one or two that have taken place. Swansea seem to have got a cracker in Sanches, how about if Athletico Madrid stall on Costa, we make an offer, hes going somewhere so why not NUFC. we have not idea how much is in the kitty to actually buy someone but its probably not much.
