There’s a tweet from Diario Ole in Argentina that Rafa Benitez is ready to make an offer for Independiente left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, with the deal being only hours away from being completed.
We’ll have to wait to see if that’s true but time is certainly running out quickly in this transfer window.
We had been linked with the once capped Argentine International over the last week or so, and his signing would mean that there is real competition at left back for local lad Paul Dummett, who is out injured with a hamstring injury at the moment.
In fact, we were reported last Saturday to have bid €4M for the player.
With the failure of Sadio Haidara and Achraf Lazaar to mount any kind of challenge to Dummett, the Argentine who turns 25 tomorrow could now have a decent chance of nailing down the left-back position this season.
Tagliafico is well regarded in Argentina and has been in good form for Independiente last season and has had European clubs interested in signing him.
Nicolas Tagliafico – hours away from signing Argentine left-back?
But with time running out Newcastle will need to complete this deal soon, and for less than £4M, this looks like an excellent signing for us.
That’s especially true with the loan move of Kenedy now looking a bit doubtful after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turned down a move to Chelsea from Arsenal.
Nicolas was born in Buenos Aires, and he’s played in the youth teams of the Argentine national side at the U15, U17, and U20 levels.
And he was impressive for the Argentina national U20 team at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, which was eventually won by Brazil.
He seems to be a talented young player.

Andrea Ranocchia the Inter defender who was on loan at Hull for the last

According to the Italian football oracle Alfredo Pedulla , last night we offered
Sampdoria €20 million – double what they paid Anderlecht last summer.

Comment #4Jib – why do we need another defender?
Surely it has to be an attacking midfielder or striker that should be signed if there is any possible incoming.

Better the devil you know??? So you’d rather have a proven liar that has let us down time and time again and has no intention of delivering any kind of success than a group of investors looking to maximise profits by making us a team ready to compete at the top. Do you think Everton fans would swap Mike Ashley for their consortium. Blackpool or Blackburn fans might sleep on it while thinking of a swap with theirs.

Comment #10Would he get a work permit with just one cap.
or does he have some duel country thing going on.
Italian ?
Need to be careful, they often get fixed up with one or two caps to beef up their CV and attract better deals.
At 25 why has he not moved to Europe sooner and why only one cap.
View this as another strange one in the Lazaar, Gamez mould.
What’s the real motivation behind it.
