Jamaal Lascelles is now “very close” to signing a new and improved deal to stay at Newcastle United under manager Rafa Benitez.
Jamaal is a significant player for Rafa and the manager thinks he can improve Jamaal over the next year or two to become a top player in the Premier League
Lascelles has always had tremendous potential, and Rafa hopes to bring that out of the former Nottingham Forest player
Benitez wants to sign his best players to long-term deals as he builds what he hopes is a team that can soon challenge for the top six in the Premier League.
Jamaal Lascelles with Rafa Benitez
Jamaal is the Newcastle captain and has shown his excellent leadership qualities when things get tough, and he’s still only 23.
This is what Rafa has said about the contract negotiations as reported in the Chronicle today:
“It’s closer than last week. Don’t worry, it’s very close.”
Jamaal has had some excellent games already this season, but we would be surprised if he is included in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup games when the squad is announced tomorrow.
But Rafa wants to make him into an England International, and he will very likely succeed in doing that.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1From a selfish point of view I hope he isn’t in the England squad so he has a nice rest. However he does deserve a call up and he certainly is as good as and plays a lot more regularly than, say, Smalling.
