Rafa Needs A New Goalkeeper Brought In During January

Rob Elliot was dropped lately and in came Karl Darlow and when that happened last season, when Karl replaced Matz Sels, he stayed as the number one goalkeeper for the rest of the season.

But that didn’t happen this time and a blunder at home to Everton when he was at fault for Everton’s winning goal, saw Rob came back in against Arsenal, and we expect Rob to play tomorrow at West Ham.

Rafa was trying to sign a goalkeeper over the summer, and they included Pepe Reina, Adrian from West Ham and Manchester City free agent Willy Caballero.

But we were not successful – if we had been, it looks like Karl Darlow would have signed for Middlesbrough.

Kiko Casilla – Real Madrid goalkeeper

This is what Rafa has said about our top two goalkeepers – as reported in the Chronicle:

“The goalkeeper situation is the same as with any other. Every player in this team, or indeed any team if they are professionals, they have to compete and be ready,”

“We can talk about whether they [Darlow and Elliot] have confidence or not, but it doesn’t matter, they have to be ready.”

“Rob knew that he would be playing at Arsenal, and he did well. Karl knows that the way to regain his position is to keep working hard.”

“That is what both of them have to do.”

“I expect a good reaction from both of them, and that is what I have been getting. We have a good team spirit, and they are both working really hard.”

If Rafa is to be able to send young England U21 goalkeeper Freddie Woodman out on loan he will need to bring in another goalkeeper next month.

Freddie wants to go out on loan, and he will not get too many England U21 call-ups unless he’s playing regular first-team football.

It was clear in the summer that Rafa wanted a new number one goalkeeper brought in and if one of his current targets is available, then it wouldn’t surprise us if he signs one next month.

Our hunch is that he wants Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla whom he signed for Real back in the summer of 2015 when Rafa was the manager there.

Freddie Woodman – top young prospect for Newcastle

That would at least allow one of our brightest young prospects – Freddie Woodman – to go on loan and get some first team experience.

He’s been very patient these last two seasons when he’s had so few first team games.

He did play 14 times on loan for Kilmarnock earlier this year.

What do you think?

We should ask Brighton if they can spare their third choice keeper who doesn’t seem to be getting any game time at all despite saving two penalties at the world cup four years ago.

Good read in the chronicle today, doesn’t mention the owners (s) but has an intake what is happening in Dubai about Newcastle, and these guys are in it for the long haul regardless of relegation.

I knew the deal had been done but to when it will be announced is anyone guess.

The Modern Danes’ Guide to Insensitive British Humour”

    Part 7 – “Banter’

Our British friends possess the unfortunate ability to find humour in being horrid to others. Perversely they view it as a form of endearment to spot and exploit weaknesses in acquaintances in the guise of “humour”. To combat this, try and remember the following:-

1/ Be self effacing. If you don’t know what this means look it up. Try practising bring self effacing in a mirror for a few hours every day.

2/ Whatever you do, do not become annoyed or they will take this as a signal to increase the intensity of the banter. Laughing “with them” is the key to defusing anguish.

3/ If practical, retaliate with your own banter. This is risky and could either defuse the situation in a revelry of camaraderie, or it could end with you publicly having your pants yanked down in public. Discretion required.

4/ if all else fails, try and find a friendly British person who can guide you through the banter minefield. Someone who is good at internet searching, or lives somewhere not far from Leeds would be ideal. A Warning – avoid offshore workers and anyone from across the Irish Sea. They are not sympathetic.

All of our current crop of GK – with exception to Woodman who I havnt seen play – are great shot stoppers but fail to command the area or deliver fast pass out to start the an attack.

The striker Manolo Gabbiadini bought by Southampton
last January had a brilliant start scoring in his first four
For whatever reason he has gone right off the boil and
fallen down the pecking order at the Saints.
He has often said his best time was his 6 months with
    Rafa at Napoli.
He was considered at one time one of the brightest
prospects in Italy and is still a regular international
I wonder if he would get his mojo back if he were
    reunited with Rafa.
He’s another who needs game time pre Russia

It’s funny how those that questioned the UEFA elite managers tactical nous for wanting a new keeper now question his nous for not playing Woodman. No mention at all that he might just have been right when deciding that the current pair were just about good enough for the Championship.

KD should be made to shave his hair off. He is forever pushing it back instead of concentrating on the game. In turn this leaves hair gel residue on his gloves, which I believe was responsible for the ball slipping through his fingers on several occasions, and especially against Leicester.

    Elementary, my dear Rafa.

Not sure about that, Bert Trautmann used approximately quarter of a litre of Brylcream on his hair and managed to play with a broken neck.

Not sure what the priorities are for rafa now but assuming a budget of, say, 30 mill, I would assume 1. Striker. 2. A number 10, 3 goalie, 4 left back?,

I’m not sure if we can afford to prioritise. A keeper and CF are essential, so is another CF and all the positions you listed. Money has to be spent.

Jail, you seem to advocating pretty radical measures to improve the lad’s game. Surely not?

Besides, Brylcream was thicker than modern gels, more like bitumastic, leading the rougher, older and heavier style leather football to stick to it rather than it slip away (unlike the lightweight smooth surfaced footballs of today). And did Bert keep brushing his hair back all the time like KD to even get it on his gloves in the first place? I seriously doubt it as it looked glued on – which was the whole point of Brylcream. Remember, RAF pilots didn’t want their hair flopping into their eyes just as a ME109 came within range. I suspect with modern hair gels the Battle of Britain could have had a quite different outcome.

Didn’t you come on not long ago and state “stick to the football chat as it makes the blog a better place, I do”

Wtf was that all about on the previous thread then? A bunker busting post of, yes you guessed it, fcukall to do with football.

Pretty much similar to the one on this thread too.

    Anyway…..ah yes, football talk.

I’ve got a feeling we’ll get tonked off spam. Hopefully we sort our sh1t out and do the double over them which in turn I think might kick start our revival.

But for the love of anything that is holy, please don’t start Joselu or Diame.

That’d be giving them an advantage from the off.

In the case of our outfield players i think loans tend to sound the death knell on their first team prospects. They aren’t good enough to cross the divide from the u-23’s and their level is in reality a league or two down. So they are farmed out to put them in the championship or league one shop window as glorified triallists.

In the case of goalkeepers, that a different matter. If they aren’t spectacularly good enough to step in as first team understudy it’s vital they go to a reasonably good club and get league competition experience. Woodman should do this ASAP, he can’t be chucked into the relegation pot it would knock him back I think.

I wonder if it’s the kit our keepers wear that’s the problem. It does look like track or road side issue this hi-vis garb. Maybe they lapse into thinking they are ground attendants and retreat toward the touchline.

I can see pardew going for mitro and mbemba. He needs a striker and if he loses Evans he will want a defender.
So I can those going to West Brom.
Colback and Diame out the door as well. Haidara, saivet possibly Gayle, darlow.
    That would help funds.
I just hope rafa gets what he wants this time.

I don’t think a keeper is a priority. Elliott is not fantastic but can do a job this season.

We really need a goal scorer, a creative midfielder, a proper right winger and two fullbacks before a keeper.

I hope Rafa gets what he needs, not what he wants. He’s made some terrible signings in his career. Decent tactician maybe, but not good in the transfer market.

Check out his Liverpool record, can count the number of good buys on one hand.

I’d take Wilshire and Sturridge on loan for the season. Both a are a class above what we have. Fitness is a issue but if they are ever going to be fit and play through the pain, it will be this season to get into the World Cup squad.

Long term they are not the answer, we don’t need players who spend more time with the physio, but they may help us get through this season until the takeover is complete. We’d definitely need others in as well though, would be too much of a gamble in relying on them alone.

Cheers for the link to Rafa’s transfer record – don’t make good reading –

On average 10 players in per year and 11 out = makes me think that he was searching/not much of a clue what he wanted or the team he wanted to play.
