Rafa has been interviewed in the Chronicle today, and he has talked about many things.
Rafa seems upbeat about both his future and Newcastle’s future, but he has indicated that the way Newcastle do things just has to change.
We are assuming he has already talked to Mike Ashley about some of the things he wants to change – like the transfers as one example – and that Mike is agreeable to them.
He would have to be if Rafa is to sign a new extended contract to stay at Newcastle.
Rafa Benitez – things must change
This is some of what Rafa has said – and he’s certain that things have to change.
“We have to change things.”
“I came here with the idea to compete and to create a strong team and a strong club, to compete every year.”
“What we have to do if we stay up is improve.”
“The way Newcastle were doing things before I arrived doesn’t mean they were right, because they were going down.”
“Now we have had the chance to go up we cannot make the same mistakes again.”
“When I said I wanted to stay I could see the potential for this club to be in the top 10 or even higher, but it depends on consistency.”
“You have to have a structure. Everybody has to be organized.”
“Can we win trophies? We would need time, but you never know in the cups.”
‘To compete and be capable of winning something, you need to have the plan and the process.”
“Everything has to be – not settled down, that’s not the right phrase, but more clear.”
Notice that he never mentions Ashley but as we said he will have talked about some of these things with the owner and why Ashley wouldn’t agree to support Rafa we don’t know.
But Ashley has shown in the past he can be stubborn and obstinate.
If Ashley continues in that way with Rafa, we will lose the manager.
But we think Ashley will be agreeable to what Rafa wants – so he can sign him long term at Newcastle.
Then the club will be worth so much more with Rafa at the helm.
Rafa knows exactly what we have to do to become an excellent side and a well-run club.
If we are safe in the Premier League (soon) and Rafa signs a long-term deal then this summer will be exhilarating for Newcastle fans.
Rafa is the perfect manager for a great club like Newcastle United with the best fans in the world.
Fact!

You have Ashley over a barrel. If he wants you to stay then he has to adhere to your requests and demands. After all he will end up with more money in the long run when you develop the team that you need to be successful .

Comment #5Ashley is over no barrel except his own belly, unfortunately. We’ve seen him so many times act out of what can only be explained by spite rather than greed. Most likely a combination of the two. But Rafa is a breath of fresh air and still our great hope for a revival of fortune. Better and wiser now for intervening travels and travails even than in his ‘pool heyday.
