Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has been interviewed on Spanish radio, and his comments have been reported in the Mail today.
Rafa has said that Newcastle have entered into negotiations with him – now we are safe in the Premier League – to extend his contract past next year and keep him at the club long-term.
With Manchester United surprisingly losing to bottom club West Brom at home on Sunday – that handed the Premier League Championship to Manchester City.
City are now 16 points clear of the Red Devils with five games to play
Rafa Benitez meets Pep Guardiola this season
This is what Rafa said about Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, and the Champions League:
“Without any doubt, they deserve the title.”
“Pep was adapting to the Premier League last season and this time he has had a spectacular season.”
“They have a great side, they have played very well. They have let in very few goals and they play such quick football.”
“They have very good players and the style that Pep likes, which is so quick, they have been able to play with that speed and intensity.”
“They have been superior to everything else.”
“Anything could happen now (in the Champions League). The four teams left in are very strong.”
“Any one of the four teams, including Liverpool, can reach the final and win it.”
“The (Liverpool) result against Manchester City was not expected but they did things very well. They got themselves in front.”
“City struggled to react and then once they were in front with the speed they have. “
“The three players upfront make the difference.”
City have now spent £1.2B on players since Sheikh Mansour bought the club ten years ago – that’s an average of £120M each year.
Which reminds us – we wonder how much Rafa will get from Mike Ashley to spend this summer – last summer he got £20M in net transfer funds.
