It’s hard to tell whether Jesper is having a dig at Rafa or “the board” or lumping them both in together like Mcardew.

Comment #47I think there is some truth in what Jesper says regarding having a whole window, and Rafa has to take some responsibility, but sometimes you just can’t get the deals done. You don’t just nip down to Tesco’s drop off your empties and get a fresh one. Maybe Rafa did need to light a fire under Charnley, and prioritise a striker from the get go, but equally we did need a centre back, full back, centre mid and winger and we got them, so not exactly a shambles. Wouldn’t describe the mid season window as a shambles either, Dubravka and Kenedy have been excellent, but we did fail to get in the striker we needed. It’s history, we are gonna finish top ten first season back.

Howay man, he knew the budget was tight so went for Abraham, Lejuene took two months, the reason January was a shambles was that Rafa publicly stated he wanted players in by the 20th to give us a fighting chance. Despite the takeover being dead in the water Ashley went on holiday. It’s been purely down to Rafa us staying up, Ashley has seemed intent on getting his relegation buzz yet again.

Lejuene had a release clause which we paid in the end anyway, why not just go in and pay it and have the guy in preseason bedding in?

Comment #52Tsunki keep your knickers on. So far Murphy hasn’t looked worth 12mill but I look forward to him being future valued at 36mill. If we had signed him for 18 or 20 Mill you would tell us he was worth it too. As for Joslu I think we were stuck for time but I wonder how he would have fared in the championship this season with a team like Fulham. Maybe 10 goals. Look we all know rafa was hamstrung but spare me Criticism free zone for any manager. If mccardew had signed him we’d have been hugely unimpressed i think. All is forgiven in the context of the budget given but to discuss potential fault or error here is jumped on by the hystericals.

How do you think Ashley was persuaded to part with 12M to buy Murphy, sell on value is why. Is it not better to have a player who wore a toon shirt at two years old than a player like Cabellavin who both simply did not want to be here.

Down to Huddersfield to make it a clean sweep for promoted clubs. (That can’t happen much can it?)
Either way, great season for all concerned. Management over cash – the way it should be.

It must have cost Staveley and her backers hundreds of thousands to go through what they did. What did she get out of it. If anything she’s been massively discredited, why would she pay for that or be complicit in it?

Comment #60Jail, do you think Rafa would look back at the window and say his part in it was completely flawless? Windows are by their very nature messy and difficult. We only had so much money, Ashley wouldn’t budge. The bigger the budget the better your chances. I like the look of this group going into this window, and with more money this time round we’ll very likely have a more than decent squad come the end of it.

I was listening to Total Sport last night, My first thoughts were about you when Steve Howey was talking about Arma, he said fair play to him he’s not a big time Charlie he’s at Barnsley now, how the foot does he not know that, he then moaned that it was hard for guys like him to break in to management. Well a good start would be by following the club you supports young players.

What else could he have done, we needed a winger, we needed all sorts. Personally I think the knowledge by most on here is so much better than those you meet at work etc and the majority on her said we needed at least five or six quality signings. We didn’t get them.

Comment #64I don’t wear them munster you’re admonishing the wrong person.
No I wouldn’t say Murphy was worth any price and i wonder why you even suggest that.
It’s not a “criticism free zone” as we all know it’s the nature of the beast to be a manager, but criticism where credit is due is suspect reasoning. Did punting the stringent budget foisted on Benitez, and the hamstringing of negotiations for what he wanted is doing a great disservice to someone who managed to wrong blood from a stone. As i said before it’s ludicrous not to expect some apples to be rotten when you have to rummage around the sell-by-date shelf.
There are enough sacked managers this season who dearly wish they’d made the percentage of right AND wrong choices Rafa has made this season. Your gossamer thin dislike of Benitez is appalling in its speciousness. There, I just chucked your pint over your head!

There are tw@ts like kimbo, welsh and ilovetoon666 who are basically wums. But there are about a half a dozen of you who don’t like Rafa being here, one of them being one of the most knowledgeable footballing guys who posts on here Lilongwe Geordie. Lilongwe coaches football and obviously prefers an attacking style, don’t we all. I would love us to win trophies in an all out attack. Having never seen a trophy in my life time I would be more than happy to see Benitez lift a cup using any means necessary. By the way he holds the record for the biggest ever CL score and it was done without Mitro.

Comment #73Jail, would be a good place to start like! 🙂 A season under Rafa’s coaching and Arma could end up saving us a fortune. He’s got the pace. He’s a natural and clinical finisher. Feeding off Shelvey or Merino, the way Gayle has, and he could develop into a top striker.
Give him his chance, then it’s in his own hands. A striker’s as good as the chances he gets. Create this kid the chances and he’s shown time and again that he’ll finish them.
Young, English, clinical finisher who could benefit greatly from a season with Rafa – or half a season at least.
Goal scoring’s a knack. You can’t coach that, but you can coach the other parts of his game. We must not let him slip by without allowing him chance to show what he can do. If Rafa can release that potential we’re on a winner.

Comment #74I think the windows were decent considering the money we had, bar the problem at striker which might have been better prioritised, but who knows, and by who, who knows, or if at all. Lejeune, Murphy, Merino, Dubravka and Kenedy all good additions, even Manqillo, who did a job for us when selected, and is improving under Rafa. Point is we are safe, we will have money to spend, and can make the room in the squad for the further better additions. Not a shambles at the end of the day.

You obviously have his measure and Tony Mowbray seems to play to his strenghths, i want to see how he does at Champo level in a team where he’s done well previously in the lower tier. It can then be proved he hasn’t found his level. Abraham bagged 20+ in a nearly relegated Bristol team.

Comment #78Jail, that’s fair comment. But I think you know I’d rather pull my name off that have sam here again. Of course I’d prefer to see us play like Liverpool but Rafa is brilliant and works a different style. That’s perfectly OK with me. But I think he should have spent the 12m on a central striker not a winger. And given that we apparently have 10 or 20 players targeted per position, cud we not have four days a foreign player for 5m not joselu? It’s small beer but let’s not censor debate?
