Rafa Benitez is hoping he will get some decent transfer funds to spend from Mike Ashley for the first time in four transfer windows this summer.
The manager deserves that for the fantastic job he’s done over the last two seasons and particularly this season, but for his expertise and experience – we could be a Championship club again.
Rafa wants to bring in some really class player this summer and to do that he will have to sell some players and have quite a clearout this summer to free up the wage bill.
Chancel Mbemba – should move to rekindle his career
Jesus Gamez, Sadio Haidara, and Curtis Good have contracts that are up at the end of June, and they will not be renewed.
Other players who could move include Rolando Aarons, who has had only a so-so loan spell at Hellas Verona this year.
Rafa doesn’t rate Henri Saivet, and he will be available as will local lad Jack Colback.
Nottingham Forest want to buy Jack, but he may try to hold out and get a loan deal because his contract still has one year to run on Tyneside.
Newcastle could expect around £5M or more for Colback if we can sell him this summer.
Chancel Mbemba just doesn’t seem to fit in under Rafa, and for his own sake he needs to move on this summer – maybe to another Premier League side.
Aleksandar Mitrovic will be sold and if he can help Fulham will the playoff final against Aston Villa on 26th May the Cottagers will be the first in line to buy him.
Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic also wants Dwight Gayle at Fulham should they be promoted.
Gayle is a tough one for Rafa because he’s improved a lot this year, but he cannot seem to score goals in the Premier League.
These nine players are very likely to leave Newcastle this summer.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.
PS – I knew I would miss an obvious one – goalkeeper Matz Sels is likely to sign permanently for Anderlecht this summer so that makes 10 – and at least another £5M in the coffers.

Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook is on the five-man standby list.
The other four players are Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Jake Livermore and Adam Lallana.
Wow Southgate, bet you didn’t invite all the kids in your class to your birthday party,

Comment #43Stones, Cahill, Jones Maguire. Seriously? Stones can’t get into City’s, side, so how is he on form? We all witnessed his last England debacle.
Oh well, unlucky lads, but you save yourself the humiliation of an early return. Buckle down and put it behind you. Your chance will come again.
Reminds me of Beardsley, Waddle and Gazza. No England call up until literally weeks of leaving Newcastle, then straight into the squad. Playing in the North East can seriously damage your England prospects.

That must be a concern for other English players NOT coming to The Toon surely?

Comment #45Mickey, probably mate. The FA probably don’t want us in the PL – too far for them to travel. Clearly too far for Southgate as he hasn’t bothered his arse. Nobody likes us, but we don’t care. Crikey, we’re the new Millwall. 🙂

Comment #47Southgate’s a serial loser. He could’ve won the U21 Championship but refused to call up anybody even loosely connected to the first team squad. Gormless goon. A yes man of the highest order. Perfect for the England job.

Comment #51Just some musings; I’m sure I read on here earlier- may though have been another Newcastle site- that the Sky TV money had ruined the Premiership as below the usual certainties to remain in the division so many teams played negative containment football.
The TV money has made the executives of clubs terrified of being relegated so in turn they have hired “safe pair of hands” managers like Allardyce, Hodgson, Moyes & Pulis. Ok, Moyes has a relegation on his record with Sunderland but I doubt anyone would’ve kept them up that season. Allardyce & Pulis have never been relegated. There is perhaps something to be said for a less expansive style & being organised. Indeed the season just gone we only scored 39 goals our lowest total since 2006/2007 (from nufc.com) however we only conceded 47 which is our best since 2005/2006 when we finished 7th (again from nufc.com) what you would say in Rafa’s defence though is with his track record that given better resources he can do better. Our tactics & style of play this season have been dictated by the means available rather than being a default setting which is more than can be said by the aforementioned. Rafa has always been a pragmatist no doubt about it but the season just gone has pushed that to the absolute limits. I think (could be wrong) that this has taken it’s toll & Rafa wants more. I expect until he signs a new deal there are lots more twists & turns on this one.
On the “safe pair of hands” issue it would take a brave club to buck the trend. Making a bold choice won’t always pay off but I think the majority of fans will respect the fact their club is trying/tried something different- even if it doesn’t work out.

Comment #52“The selection process has been over months really, it’s not just been the last few weeks” – from the gormless travel-shy puppet himself, with an implication that he wouldn’t have taken Shelvey and Lascelles because the media have only picked up their cases in recent weeks.
Mind, if he was a proper talent spotter, he would have dragged his arse up here himself to have a look at the young talent we’ve been playing week in week out.

Comment #55Cahill makes the World Cup squad but Lascelles doesn’t? Looks like playing for a ‘bigger club’ has advantages after all. Hope that doesn’t makes Lascelles want to jump ship.
And Shelvey doesn’t even make the stand-by squad but Livermore does? Has Southgate even watched Shelvey recently? Even Lallana made the stand-by squad and he’s been out nearly all season. Shocking.

Comment #57WC now lacks a bit of interest. Always better if there is a local player or two to cheer on.
The last few weeks a lot of folk have been praising Shelveys recent form and suggesting he deserved a call up,
Cannot think of any English midfield players playing better than him currently.
Think hevis going to be 30 next WC so this was probably his last shout..
England should get through the group stage and then a sharp exit.
Southgate appears not to possess inspirational skills I fancy that will become apparent in a few weeks time.

Comment #61So we can expect to see a lot of crab football in Russia. Henderson is the master of it. Sideways or backwards is his default setting. Seriously, what a bore.
Well, seeing as we have no interest in the squad I’d be happy enough to see us out in the group stages. At least that might make them rethink Southgate – although I don’t suppose it would. The FA have their own little pet worm.

Comment #65Matt, as memory serves me, none of them were in the team before leaving us, yet picked in the next squad after moving. That’s how I recall it anyway. Somebody else might remind me differently though. I might have it wrong, but that’s, how I recall it. 🙂
Shearer played for England whilst here, as did some of the others in that great era, but they had little option then.
If Lascelles and Shelvey were playing for one of the darling clubs, you can guarantee they’d be picked. That’s the annoying part.
Still, as stated earlier, at least neither is in the shop window over the summer – and Everton’s, risible £25m offer won’t result in anything.

Comment #66Gave up on England a LONG time ago. Disappointed for Shelvey and Lascelles but it’s good news for us. Some of the England squad shows why we will never win anything. We’re not like Spain and Germany where all the best players play for one or two clubs. We have a very cosmopolitan league so just looking at the clubs means you’re missing out on a wealth of talent. So be it, like I say, gave up on the England team a long time ago.

Comment #71No worries Bobby, I’m not in any position to correct you 🙂
I knew Lascelles wasn’t going to get in but I thought Jonjo might’ve snuck in on the standby list given all the good coverage he’s had lately. Lets look at the positives though like you said. No “shop window” no danger of being jaded & no hangover after being associated with another “England failure”

Comment #75As far as I know Southgate has been to see us play twice this year? He was at the Palace game in October and the Swansea game in January (He sat with Charnley), It’s disgraceful but he will be sacked after the World cup and his squad selection will come back and bite him on the arse.

Comment #76Matt, aye, I thought Shelvey had a better chance than Lascelles, mainly because he deserves it. Stones and Cahill were shoe ins, despite lack of form, so I could see Lascelles struggling, but Shelvey offers so much more than any of the others.
I think there’s something in the trumped up racist crap though. They’re saying on talksport that Southgate was worried about the effect on team moral if Shelvey was included. That’s slanderous imo. That one nonsense incident aside, he’s, never Been accused of anything like that before and it’s not like he was convicted of it, just some suits passing an opinion. Disgraceful.
