Islam Slimani was not one of Rafa’s top striker targets during the January transfer window, but because we left it until the final day of the window at Newcastle to get a striker in, we took a chance on the injured Algerian.
But it didn’t pay off, and Slimani was injured for two months with a thigh problem while on loan and made only 4 appearances with one start.
So it will not come as a shock today that the Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle will not bother following up on the 29-year-old.
Islam Slimani will not be joining Newcastle this summer
Leicester City will be asking something north of £17.5M for their striker, who has not had a good time of it in the Premier League since signing on at Leicester City from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2016.
The striker left Newcastle in the final week of the season after he picked up a three-match ban and couldn’t play for Newcastle in the last three games of the season.
Rafa will no doubt be looking elsewhere for strikers and he could well return for his number on target in January – 27-year-old Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen.
The Danish International was available for around £20M, but Mike Ashley refused to pay that transfer fee and the deal could not be completed.
But surely the money will be available this time around?
If it isn’t that may be a trigger that tells Rafa Benitez Mike Ashley is still not supporting him in the transfer windows.
So our best bet for who is Rafa’s number one striker target this summer would be the Danish International.
What do you think?
