Jack Colback could bring in a decent £5M in this summer’s transfer market if we can sell him.
After being involved in a training altercation with Rafa Benitez last August the local lad has no future at the club.
He was already training with the U23 squad when one of our first players picked up a knock, and Rafa wanted Jack to fill in for him – but he refused.
That was it on Jack Colback – you don’t say no to Rafa Benitez when he makes a reasonable request in training.
Jack Colback wants to be on Newcastle’s books until next summer
Jack signed on as a free agent from Sunderland in the summer of 2014 on a five-year deal, and he seems determined to become a free agent again next summer.
Nottingham Forst and other clubs are interested in buying him, but a barrier to that are his £40K/week wages.
And that’s also a reason why Jack wants to remain a Newcastle player for another year.
Rafa may try to force the issue since it does mean around £5M for his transfer coffers.
We will have to see what happens but it seems Jack would be happy enough to go on loan again.
That could possibly mean a return to Nottingham Forest on loan to see out the last year of his lucrative contract at Newcastle.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens but all transfers have to be completed by Thursday, August 9 since the Premier League starts on the following weekend.
The Premier League fixtures are to be released this Thursday.

Comment #82@9, #79, The Council DO NOT own SJP land, the Freemen of the City do, and they are totally and utterly different from the Council.

Comment #83Gosh, Dubai, you have me there. In a discussion of how much NUFC is worth vis a vis a £2billion bid for Chelski, the fact that NUFC do not own St James’, but the council do,is totally transformed by your correction that NUFC do not own St James’ but the Freemen of the City do. I stand corrected.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ashley thought SJP was owned by the club when he bought it without having carried out due diligence.
The man’s a greedy parasite the like of which blackens the reputation of British business – not that it’s got a good reputation anyway.
When we consider the likes of Armstrong, Lever, Cadbury, Rowntree and the like, the Victorian/ Edwardian owners of big business, yes, they were hungry for profit but at least they made gestures toward providing for their employees by way of housing, parks and the like but Ashley seems to thrive on squeezing the last drop of blood from people.
If he needed my help to save him, I’d bd inclined to make the bustard squirm before giving it.

Comment #87The predictable lack of success of Gayle as our number 9 at this level improves the chances of Mitro being brought back into the fold. If Gayle isn’t going to be plan A, and we bring in someone similar to Mitro to lead the line we might keep Mitro as competition. To me Mitro is a much better proposition than Gayle, but you still don’t want to go in with either as your main man up top. I think a top striker, with Perez behind, and Mitro, Gayle and Joselu in reserve to push them would be fine. To me Gayle is only a second striker at epl level, and not a starter, and Joselu at best 5th choice of 5 strikers in a decent epl squad. A front five like that would be within our budget and would improve us.

Comment #88Nicky @87 Sorry, mate, you seem to me to be well off the pace. Any discussion of drosselu in the Premier league is just a waste of space, as he himself is at this level, but what I mainly object to is your view that Mitro has a future under Rafa. I understand your view that it would be good for NUFC if this were to happen, and I entirely agree with you on this, but to imagine that Rafa wants to keep him seems to me, fantasy. You cannot look at the history of Rafa and Mitro and conclude anything other than (rightly or wrongly) Rafa has written the lad off. Big time.

Comment #89This Mitro thing to me is a little nuts, on paper I think most would agree he is better than Josey by a mile, I also think most would say he is a better target man and goal threat than Gayle. I’m not just talking our fans but football brains around the world, pundits and managers etc. So Jonjo lets down Rafa the Gaffa by getting sent off, Rafa had him back in the team and thank god he did. Mitro got sent off and Rafa didn’t play him and sent him on loan, so looking at this on the outside looking in, I would say Mitro has done something else worse than getting sent off.
This has nothing to do with the sending off but he has done something on the training ground or in Rafa’s presence that was a direct insult to Rafa. As for Ginger Spice, I how they get the band back together so he can join them and not suck 40000.00 out of the club.

Comment #909, I disagree about Joselu. You need a 5th choice striker, but you are really hoping you won’t need to use him all that often. He’s on our books and will be hard to shift, so to me that’s how we could use him. He’s a decent pro, good trainer and serviceable 5th choice striker.

Comment #92What I find interesting after securing PL residency with arguably a world class manager there is still discussion about how to play Gayle, Mitrovic and…gag…Joselu.
Aren’t we supposed to be talking about serious new upgrades here rather than see if we can retread our part-worns one more time?

Comment #94I don’t think he’s categorically written Mitro off either, but for sure he clearly doesn’t see him as his starting central striker. Rafa will know he won’t likely get the strike force he ideally wants. It will be about shaping it as best he can.

Comment #95Nicky @90 Sorry, mate, any views in favour of drosselu at Premier league level leave me cold. And everybody else: I can’t, unfortunately, get my head round your argument that he is worth it as a 5th choice striker. 5th choice? ??????

Comment #96Ok, now it’s official. Everton are just an irritant like old chewing gum on the sole of your shoes. Thought they’d done their business with Cenk Tosun, he’s going to love this.
Everton and Newcastle United target Bas Dost has terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon.
Rui Patricio, Daniel Podence, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes and Gelson Martins have also sent their resignation letters, placing Sporting Lisbon in a dire situation.

Comment #97The Mag has an article on a report from Spain on Merino who has apparently told his friends he wants to move. They also say that both the President and Coach of Real Betis have already spoken to him.
I think this is nonsense, but there’s growing pressure coming from the Spanish media which is bound to unsettle the lad. This is when we need strong leadership, but Rafa is quiet (hols?) and the club management ineffective.

Comment #98Newcastle can’t upgrade in one fell swoop. Even if we keep Mitro, Gayle and Joselu, we still need to bring in a 20 to 30 million quid striker, as well as strengthening else where.

Comment #99You need a 5th choice, and Joselu can play up top or behind. is a good pro and a decent trainer. It’s not that complicated. I’d ideally move him on, but I’m assuming we’ll need to use him.

Comment #100If Bas is officially telling sporting that he is resigning due to violence at the club then Newcastle should be on this like yesterday. Is the club again going to allow Everton to slide in and sign a player we have scouted forever, if that happens then our owner and Penfold should resign from our club to avoid the violence. Not saying physical but 100% verbal.

Comment #101Everybody knows : a) Drosselu was never Rafa’s first choice;
b) He has been seen in the Premier League for us, and is no good.
c) Stoke (was it?) had him in the Premier League and were happy to swap him for £5m so they didn’t think much of him.
d) Nicky says he is a tryer and trains hard: I would try hard and train hard for his money, but I am a useless footballer; my granny might also try hard,
e) Is there really any future in debating Drosselu’s ability in a Premier league club aiming to finish high in the league?
f) I know this is a weak point, but, is ANYBODY ELSE supporting Nicky’s desire to have Drosselu as our 5th choice (?????) striker next year?

Comment #102The Sun are running with this Sporting story, which doesn’t make it true but does give it some credibility.
I’d love to see Bas dost here, under the right circumstances. However, if he’s prepared to do this to his club, does that show a lack of loyalty? I know there has been severe provocation and the fans have shown him exactly what they think of him, but are he and the others using it as an excuse to engineer a move?
I wonder what Rafa thinks about the way things are panning out over there – he’ll be in the loop on developments, for certain.

Comment #103Hahaha, geez you really hate the guys guts, don’t you? No worries mate. Theer are 2 starting spots for central strikers, therefore you need 5 central strikers. Joselu can cover both positions, will likely be hard to move on, and we will have a limited budget. Like it or not he’s probably going to feature for us next term. Hopefully not a lot, hopefully not at all, and I’m not saying that’s great, just that it’s likely.

Comment #105Think there is more to this sporting story. Think the cases of the players resignations will be assessed by the courts or whatever and will then decide if they can walk out of their contracts. Not sure how long it will take but it could be an opportunity to buy the players on the cheap as sporting will likely want to make some money from this.

Think bas dost has more reason to resign since he seemed to bear the most of fan aggression suffering cuts to his head. Wouldn’t put it down to him lacking loyalty in this instance. However some reports say players are doing this to try and engineer the someone at the top in sporting they do not like. Not really sure on it all but interesting finding it all out.

Comment #107@RobL #102, That’s my concern too, surely we all want people who believe in the city and the shirt, not the likes of Owen (for example), who came for the money.
This is also why we need a shed load of money ploughed into the Academy. However, wouldn’t a £10m first year and a £2m subsequent years make more sense than a £20m cost of a player over 5 years?

Comment #109Ronaldo, yep I know he took a beating – that Sun article shows cuts to his head which they say were suffered during the attack, but how do we know that’s true? If true, like i say the fans or at least a section of them showed him how they feel about him and I can’t blame him for looking to engineer a move in those circumstances.
Surely this move would be subject to tribunals, legal appeals etc. The Bosman court proceedings took years to complete, being dragged through the highest European courts. As far as I know, this would be the first case of its kind so would take just as long.
Let’s imagine he and his colleagues manage to leave the club and are free to sign elsewhere. There will still be court proceedings hanging over his head and that of the club that signs him for years, with the potential at the end of it for the club to have to pay up to the value of his release clause if the law rules in Sporting’s favour, plus potential damages and fines.
It seems like a risk, even discounting the fact that there’s a risk of him doing this again to us if he feels he wants to move again mid-contract.
In fact, this could potentially be a bigger existential threat to the football contracts and transfer system than Bosman was. Sports lawyers will be rubbing their hands at this.

Jib broke the blog twice. Once, ok but twice? Come on, wake up.
And as for Tsunki’s demonstration to show chicousa how easy it was to break the blog with an innocent post, well…… Whatever.
The fact is, breaking it once was enough but to repeat the act twice more will have involved Ed in some activity to fix it three times, activity he just doesn’t need.
In Ed’s shoes, I’d have banned one of the perpetrators for life and given a yellow card to the other.

Comment #113Ordinarily I would be overcome with excitement about the prospects of ‘snapping up’ a William Carvalho and/or a Bas Dost on a “fire sale, distressed transfer situation”. But the experience of last summer’s disappointing window and the past couple January windows have left me all numb to hoping that anything with this club in the transfer market will ever be snappy….sigh. 🙁
Can anything ever be done early, quickly?? WTF is Charnley doing each day…?

Comment #114Micky, I’m with you – no more mercenaries. Importantly, Rafa feels the same, which is why I’d be ery keen to know what he thinks of the behaviour of these players. As I say, he’s likely to know the exact circumstances and to have already been able to consider the legal side, so hopefully he can take advantage of this situation to the best interests of the club.
Oldgit1, absolutely they’ll have a hard time in recruitment. These are all big players for them, so the heart of the club will be torn out. All fans should take note – this is how poor fan behaviour can impact the club you love, and it only takes a minority to wreak such havoc.

Comment #115@ Lesh , when I was a young un, my dad, due to his job, moved up and down the country a lot, which meant I was always changing schools, I think it was 10 schools I went to, this was from primary, juniors, and sec mod. My dad always moved during term time so I had to go to a classroom and stand in front of the class and introduce myself.
The teacher always said, “ now where can you sit ?” There was always one guy that nobody in class liked who put his hand up and that was where I had to sit.
You sir, are becoming like that person who nobody likes, try and ease off our Jib.the blog would be boring without him.

Comment #116I can’t see us entering a bidding war with Everton over Bas Dost. We won’t want to pay his wage demands, that will leave the door open for Everton or anyone else with serious interest. Comment #119chicousa 117 I am more optimistic this season, last season I thought 14th would be a good result. This season, if we can keep the bulk of the squad that served us well in the last 5 months of last season, + 4 or 5 good additions to the squad I see us challenging top 6 if we hit the ground running. Is that optimistic enough?

Comment #120The Mitro situation is not at all clear cut. Obviously if you sell you need to replace, and the right replacement might be difficult to get over the line. That’s a given, particularly in light of our finite budget.
But added to that is that the player himself may have improved sufficiently for Rafa to reconsider him. He will come back to us after banging them in for Fulham and helping them to promotion to the EPL and also having led Serbia’s line in the World Cup.
