Lee Ryder conducted an interesting Q&A with Chronicle readers today, and one of the things Lee was asked about was about Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost.
Bas was the sixth Sporting player to lodge legal action against Sporting Lisbon this week, after being attacked by fans during training in mid-May.
Dost has made a move to become a free agent and be released from his contract at Sporting Lisbon.
But this saga could drag on and on in the courts.
And since the Sporting Lisbon hierarchy are furious they could lose so many good players, they will be dragging their feet as much as possible this summer to delay the moves of any of the six players.
Bas Dost – Newcastle no longer interested
However, this thing is likely to be slow moving with no quick decision on the cases likely.
Lee Ryder has said it doesn’t look like Rafa is interested in going after Bas Dost this summer and the Spaniard has other striker targets he is interested in.
And news today that Burnley have made a £25M double sweep for West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez and center-back Craig Dawson.
Newcastle have been linked with Dawson this summer, and the 28-year-old defender would add some experience to Newcastle’s back line.
But with Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark all getting good experience in the Premier League last season – experience may not be such a high priority for Rafa this summer.
Clark also played 134 Premier League games for Aston Villa before arriving on Tyneside two years ago for a paltry £5M – a bargain for Newcastle.
Former Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez used to play for Burnley his hometown club before he left for the Saints back in 20012.
He’s an average type of striker, and we have never been linked with the striker since Rafa arrived at the club.
But two targets we have been linked with – Bas Dost and Craig Dawson – now look unlikely to arrive the summer.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5I could write a list of a couple of hundred players who wont be coming to Toon this year, its very easy, any good player who’s team wants market value for their player. Same old cheapskate ways this year then goodbye Raffa. Fatty will never change his ways, remember Kevs parting words about him? He must have the record for losing court cases brought fwd by his own managers & players not to mention every other business dealing with him

Comment #7Now that the season ticket renewal is out. I think the fans should refuse to buy any until rafas contract is sorted out and and a proper amount of money is given for transfers

I’ve no doubt Rafa will be Spanish manager one of these days, but I’d be very surprised if it was within the next year.

Comment #11That sporting story has been interesting when reading into it a little. I mentioned there were reports this move by players was aimed at forcing the president to stand down. He’s supposedly offered to stand down if they take back their resignations. This all after calling them all babies I think I read lol after a defeat and saying he should sack them all after losing a europa league match, I think against atletico madrid. One of their coaches is linked to ultras too which dont help matters.

Comment #14Ronaldo, that could be very good news. I’ve said before that the biggest issue we may have this Summer window could be wages, not because of the club being tight but because of having to stay within FFP regulations.
Mbemba is essentially surplus to requirements but is taking up a chunk of wages – around £30k per week apparently. If we’re having to balance the books and not increase our wage burden, this means we could use that wage chunk to recruit someone else and keep the status quo the same. So, for example, if we happen to recruit a striker, then we’ll be able to shift Gayle, Mitro or Joselu off the books and replace him with a left-sided midfielder and so on.
Just shifting one player off the books might actually free up the whole of our transfer strategy and have nothing to do with the player’s value.

I get that but with mbemba leaving we need a replacement cb who will likely be on similar if not more wages. Our wage bill does need to come down and I think that guy PriceOfFootball put our wages as around £80m in the championship. We do need to get rid of some players in reality, those that aren’t in our plans but our wages should still be manageable to buy players.

Comment #17At CB without Mbembe we’ve got Lascelles, Lejeune and Clark as specialists, Dummett and Hayden who can fill in and we may buy a junior for the development squad who could step up as Merino, Murphy and Hayden himself did last season.
I don’t see CB as a priority as defence is our strongest area. If we buy a CB, I’d imagine it would be the end of Clark who is a good pro but has a limited skill set.

Comment #20Why does Ashley have to go.. Simple fact he isn’t going anywhere .
Minimum spend yet receives big profits and free Advertising for his brand, Win win for the Fat controller.
He doesnt give a crap about Nufc or you or i as supporters hell he doesnt even go to games anymore.Rafa will more than likely be gone in another season, So will the better players.
And still he can guarantee we will turn up every home game and fill the stadium.
One lucky cookie i would say

Christian Atsu £6,200,000
Florian Lejeune £8,700,000
Jacob Murphy £12,000,000
Javier Manquillo £4,500,000
Joselu £5,000,000
Mikel Merino £8,500,000
TOTAL £44.9M
Players out £17.5M
Net spend £27M
I would not be too ashamed of a similar transfer window this year and would be happy to see £25M being spent on one player, preferably a Striker. However, I am not sure Rafa would be overly enthusiastic.
Am I correct in thinking Colbacks wages for the remainder of his contract have been written off in last years accounts, or was that just the players who were sold off when we were relegated?

Really???
tell that to the hundreds of fans who have had there seats taken away from them this summer without a care in the world and no promise of another seat being available for the upcoming season.
Or the fact that he uses the club as nothing more than a showboat to brand his sports direct logo across the world.
Or the fact that we must be very close now to losing the best manager we have had since SBR. The list goes on and on.
