Mitrovic Serbia’s Danger Man – But Fails To Score In 1-0 Win

Aleksandar Mitrovic had a good game for Serbia today in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica and was always in the thick of things.

The winner was a beauty direct from a  free kick from former Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov who is now at Roma.

But he did miss two glorious chances when he was straight through one on one with Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas but failed to find the back of the net.

One of the chances was after 86 minutes and after that he was withdrawn but Mitro did show some good hold-up play – and he is a classic old-fashioned center-forward.

If he had notched a couple of goals we would be talking about an excellent performance from the Newcastle striker.

But he did not add to his value with today’s display – goals are needed for that to happen.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – in action against Costa Rica today – a handful

Here’s how some of our fans reacted to his display today and opinion – as usual – is divided.

After watching France Germany and Brazil I think our decade old style of play could be affective.

As it was a bit strange I thought I’d repost this.

Just had a very bizarre experience on the blog.

I clicked onto what I thought was a recent thread and couldn’t understand why I was seeing comments from expatmag.

Until I looked at the dates, it was a 2017 thread! Was a bit Twilight zone for a moment.

Strange thing was that, the subject matter was such that it could easily have been a current thread which is why I didn’t cotton on straight away.

Like jail mentioned earlier the new signings definitely made a difference, I also thought our players actually lifted their game after Mitrovic left. No doubt he has quality’s but I think Rafa may have seen him as a bad infulance in the dressing room. who knows ?

Pity Shelvey hadn’t made the England squad, would have been great to see him play.

I am not sure Maddison’s fee puts Kenedy’s valuation into any perspective to be honest!

Maddison is a home grown player and because of the system put into place in the PL he’s going to way overpriced!

A great prospect non the less

Everyone really worked their socks off the last 3-4 months of the season…and both Dubravka and Kenedy were a breath of fresh air!

…Perez for me was the highlight. Him and Lascelles and to a certain extend Shelvey!

Joselu was a prime example of how we’ve wasted millions just for the sake of going for a cheaper option. Any player can be a gamble but he was a known flop before he came.
Sure Rafa will have a good option lined up for this transfer window.

i expect so. Rafa bought players to get out the championship then bought players including Joselu for the purpose of avoiding relegation, this time he will be buying players to push on.

I think it’s tricky situation with mitro. He’s the best we have currently but doesn’t fit or get game time. It’s like hanging on to a designer jumper that’s the wrong size in case you grow into it or lose some weight.
If it’s not gonna work for him here for whatever reason we should let him go but get best price we can and reinvest in a player that will work for us. If we got mitro and Gayle out could we then tempt the right player in?

Joselu wouldl most likely fall into the Colback, Saivet, Lazaar category of hard to shift. But bear in mind you ideally need 5 central strikers, one to start up top, one to start alongside or just behind, two on the bench, and another to cover for injury. Of all the players we have, Joselu is most likely to be the “another”. It’s a bit like third string keeper, you need someone capable in a pinch, a solid trainer, with a good attitude despite knowing they aren’t likely to figure. You can sell Mitro, you can sell Gayle, you might be able to move on Joselu too, but if you did that means 4 new strikers, and that’s a tough ask. I’d think it more realistic to go all out for a great number nine to start as first order of business, Mitro to push him, Perez in behind, Gayle to push him, with Joselu 5th choice, and if any business can be done to improve the central attack beyond that, great, if not we’ll at least be competitive.

I really don’t buy into this 5 strikers Unless you play two uptop. End of the day you have 25 squad places so 22 is 1 and cover for every position. In our case 1 uptop based on the 4411 we seem to have predominantly played. We need 3 in the squad. Of course any u21 players could be the additional players. Rafa whilst here has always had 3 strikers. Unless you count Perez which I don’t.

Jesper it is very easy why Mitro is not working out for us. Firstly Rafa likes his players to defend from the front and chase everything down (remember kuyt)- Mitro doesn’t do that. Secondly a premiership calibre striker should have good movement in the box- Mitro doesn’t have that. Thirdly a premiership calibre striker should be able to finish easy chances on a regular basis – Mitro can’t do that. Add to the fact he is not trustworthy due to his incorrectly applied aggression I think that pretty much sums up why it is not going to work out. I will say it again even with all the above he is still better than Gayle and Joselu in my opinion. We need the three sold and bring in 2 strikers and at least 1 no10.

You’ve got two central attackers, call one of them a 10 if you like, but he’s still a second central striker. For two years we’ve had Diame as one of the 5 you need, and you do need 5, and you certainly don’t want to go in again with both Diame and Joselu as two of them.

Nufc-83…I am not sure I agree to much of that but it’s a valid option like so many others!

It’s clear though that Rafa does not trust him. Rafa is a bit old fashioned that way.

Mitro does seem to have grownup a bit…seeing as we will have no money to spend this window compared to the marked prices I do hope Gayle and Joselu will be the casualties 🙂

Jane…Sweden has put together a very young and interesting team…there’s no Zlatan that’s right but there’s options especially from the midfield!

They are defensive strong I think so don’t count on them going all gung ho and scoring plenty of goals

Rafa had no choice but to sign Joselu. Money dictated shopping in the bargain basement.

And you seem to be aspiring to Jib’s role of justifying Ashley’s ownership. Better be careful, Jib’ll be on your case!

Thought Mitro had a good game, but Ivanovic is still one hell of a player, I reckon he has at least another two good seasons in him.

I don’t normally want to see older players coming into the side but i’d love to see us sign him.

The Commodore 64 actually changed my life (I know that sounds very corny!). Bought one in the ‘83 timeframe and taught myself how to program in basic and then assembly language. That motivated me to go back to university to get a degree in Computer Science.

Note: after the Commodore 64 I bought the next gen Commodore: the awesome and way ahead of its time, the Amiga 1000!

On Mitro’s match earlier today (yesterday). I would give him a B grade. Not his best game but he contributed to the goal as he stole the ball, dribbled into the CRC half and was fouled from behind leading to the free kick that won the match. He also wreaked havoc on the Costa Rica defense all match. He should have done better on his 2 chances, but overall a decent game.

Ronaldo aarons pretty much summarized my own view of Mitro at #1 on this post.

Mitro made the chances himself and that’s important to note. They could easily have gone in, as they do with this player.

He has proven that he is a goalscorer. All forwards miss goals even sitters. The biggest miss of the season, open goal, no keeper? Cabani.

He had only two chances yesterday. If he’d scored both that would’ve been 100%. If he’d scored one, 50%. It doesn’t work that way.

He may not be lukaku but then we’re the other United.

    Keep, unless you find better.

I don’t buy into the argument that Rafa had no choice but to buy Joselu that’s just a weak defence of Rafa and what was always a poor buy!

Of course you have a choice.

    For once:
    1. You could have stopped wasted a whole window waiting for Tammy
    2. If Rafa was interested in a loan deal for Tammy then change target
    3. January window showed loan deals were a great way forward
    5. He could have kept Mitro and actually tried using him
    6. He could have donated £5M to the Red Cross
    7. Probably lots of other options if one put his mind to it
