Mitrovic Serbia’s Danger Man – But Fails To Score In 1-0 Win

Aleksandar Mitrovic had a good game for Serbia today in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica and was always in the thick of things.

The winner was a beauty direct from a  free kick from former Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov who is now at Roma.

But he did miss two glorious chances when he was straight through one on one with Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas but failed to find the back of the net.

One of the chances was after 86 minutes and after that he was withdrawn but Mitro did show some good hold-up play – and he is a classic old-fashioned center-forward.

If he had notched a couple of goals we would be talking about an excellent performance from the Newcastle striker.

But he did not add to his value with today’s display – goals are needed for that to happen.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – in action against Costa Rica today – a handful

Here’s how some of our fans reacted to his display today and opinion – as usual – is divided.

I think on Joselu he has a good pedigree and was playing well in pre-season for Stoke so Rafa took a last minute punt. He got it wrong I think we will all agree but I can see why he took the chance.

    Jesper,
Rafa has spelled it out, he hands his list of targets to Charnley, Rafa talks to the targets and convinces them to join, Charnley via Bishop via Ashley have the final say on transfers. How can you say Rafa wasted the window on Abraham.

    Morning Jesper

“You could have stopped wasted a whole window waiting for Tammy”

No. As pointed out before, Tammy signed for Swansea at the end of June!

Whilst fans are talking Joselu, a Matelot I know seems to think that WBA have enquired about him on a season long loan. Not seen this rumour anywhere else, but a season in the Champo might work out well for him. Not that I think there is anything to this rumour, but nonetheless it could work for all parties.

You might as well cut and paste that explanation to Jesper you will be revisiting this time and again. He doesn’t get it.

The insistence on picking players like Joselu or alleged pointless heel-dragging attempts to buy other “useless” players is totally specious. What is it trying to prove? Rafa is fallible? Ok fine then let’s move on. But it isn’t just that is it? Its being punted as reasons we need a better manager, one who isn’t a played out dinosaur tactician – or some kind of prophetic warning of impending disaster, so that those who keep bringing it up can smugly chant their I-told-you-so the manager is useless when the club is relegated again.

Instead of looking at it blinkered these nuggets should try and perceive the picture that Benitez does, a much bigger one played out with long term strategy and percentages won. That is what got a team purchased in the Championship to sit halfway up the PL. These nitpicking critics are like someone not eating because they don’t like the pattern on the plate.

    Great analogy

Now hold that thought and transfer it to
tedious twats who constantly bang on
about the ownership , and you’ll get
    where I’m coming from.

My take on Mitro.. He did OK in the first game, nothing more, nothing less. Exactly the type of game I have seen him play at the Toon. Sticks in one area of the pitch, waits for the ball to arrive in his immediate vicinity. Bullies weak defenders. Misses some chances. Serbia had lots of more mobile midfielders bursting forward to do the work around him, and pop up with efforts on goal, or to create the space.
In the Prem, with the players we have and the system Rafa has working to its limits, we find it difficult to provide the support Mitro needs to thrive. He gets isolated and doesn’t see the ball in the areas he needs to.
Essentially he’s the same player he was, he has improved a bit in holding the ball up and linking the play, and he has managed to be more savvy with the aggression side of things because it’s been going well for him.
He isn’t the striker we need, but at the moment he is starting if we don’t sign a mobile, more clinical finisher who is capable of making some chances for himself as well as being presented with them.

It’s good to be able to admit to being wrong.
Two months ago I was dismissive of England
    the WC and Southgate.
The England team is one of the youngest in the
    tournament and good to watch
The WC is turning into a class event
Gareth Southgate is growing into a fine manager
