Newcastle have so far signed only one player in this transfer market, and it was an absolute bargain when we paid Sparta Prague £4M for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Rafa wants Newcastle to move much more quickly in the transfer window to get his top targets in.
But this is looking as poor and indecisive as it was last summer when Rafa was less than pleased at the speed Newcastle did their transfer business.
Nothing much seems to have changed, and in addition to not bringing players in, we are also having trouble selling players for a decent price.
Chancel Mbemba’s move to Porto has been stalled because Newcastle want £8M for the defender and Porto only want to pay £6M.
Rafa Benitez – has been quiet over the summer
Matz Sels proposed transfer to Anderlecht has broken down with the news that Anderlecht bid £1.75M for the goalkeeper and Newcastle want £2.25M.
It was always going to be a difficult summer for Rafa, but he has not seen any significant improvements in the way Newcastle go about their transfer business.
And the financial restraints are still there from Mike Ashley.
They will always be there from Mike Ashley.
This is not good news in a window that is very important to the future of Rafa Benitez as the Newcastle manager; he has one year left on his three year deal at Newcastle.
It will take a significant effort from Rafa himself to get some good players signed before August 9th and on the positive side of things that’s not impossible.
But Rafa could get a lot more support at almost any other Premier League club, and he’s probably not too happy with things right now.
Training starts up again a week on Monday, and it will be interesting to see what he says at that time.
He will want some signings done before then, so it’s a critical two weeks, but there seems little chance of new players coming in, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
The manager has been very quiet over the summer.
