Report – Top Midfielder Close To Deal – Negotiations At Very Advanced Stage

Mundo Deportivo have again been reporting on Mikel merino’s potential move back to Spain, and it’s between three clubs – Real Sociedad, Real Betis and ????? with the San Sebastian club (Sociedad) in the lead.

The latest news is that the negotiations between the parties are at a very advanced after new talks have been taking place in the last few hours, and that’s according to Euskal Telebista, the radio and TV channel.

The Spanish press have been pushing this deal since last year, but we still don’t know how true it all is with Mikel on vacation over there in New York City.

Mikel Merino – in action last season

Here’s a piece we translated from the Mundo Deportivo report today:

“Merino returns from his period of rest at the beginning of next week and that would be when Real would finish the offensive for the Navarre midfielder.”

“In the meantime, it would only be necessary to resolve certain fiscal details that, while important, are in no case decisive for the operation to be subject to lurches – which are not expected today.”

“Athletic, according to this information,  have distanced themselves from interest in Merino by observing his approach to Real.”

“As this newspaper has been reporting, the signing of the former Osasuna player could be around a dozen million euros and Real would be willing to offer a long-term contract of 5 seasons to the player who currently belongs to Newcastle.”

“Next week could be decisive and, with Merino returning from vacation, it is not ruled out that  Real could announce the deal.”

We’re still not convinced this deal will go through.

What do you think?

See that Leicester has completed the signing of maddison for 27m from Norwich.

I’m worried we can’t even compete with clubs in the championship.

So at least three clubs are rumoured to be after Merino.
That sounds like an auction to me.
    Starting bid let’s say £15m
Come on Charnley don’t bring the gavel down yet, might be more in that you think. Alternatively it’s all bullshite from the Spanish press and Merino stays right where he is.

Merino seems ambitious doesn’t want to sit on the bench. Think Rafa will let him go, or is it Ashley. Wish we had an idea what’s going on

That’s my personal take on it, but who knows?

The way we are at the moment I’m in favor of getting quality in on loan, Dubravka & Kenedy turned our season around when supposedly we didn’t have any funds in place to buy what we needed. Until we are pushing on and challenging consistently at the top end of the table some loans can be a huge benefit. Obviously we’ve had more than our fair share of deals that didn’t work out in recent years but I’d rather have a player for a year just paying his wages rather than a few million outlay and they don’t work out

    Just checked the Prem. site.

Premier League restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

    They are:
    – Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
    – The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
    – Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
    – A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club

The, “under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.” being the critical bit.

The Italian media seem to think the
    imminent departure of Merino indicates
Stefano Struraro to NUFC from Juventus

All we do is talk talk talk whilst others sign their targets
James Maddison for £27 million seems madness to me , how do they do it ?

I do hope that Rafa is just keeping his cards close to his chest and that we can improve on the team by considered signings to improve a team which did after all finish 10th.
We have some good players who work well together so just spending for the sake of it doesn’t necessarily improve the team.
Time will tell but I think we will sign 4 or 5 players before too long.

I am getting concerned over the incomings to the club. Some people say we will not buy until TV comes into the club in July ! Ashley knows this money is coming in so why not pay upfront now from his billions and take it back from the subsuequent TV money. It seems it is personal vendetta against NUFC fans. The day he leaves is a day to rejoice !!!

Spurs pay in instalments and we are supposed to pay upfront doesn’t seem to benefit our cash flow

Not a level playing field for us to wheel and deal ,very depressing

If Merino goes it highlights the problems you have building a good squad. You need twenty five capable players, but how do you get twenty five capable players when the side is in transition, and how do you keep them happy? Merino, unless injured, is a perfect player for us, not because he is good enough to start, which is debatable, but because he is good enough to understudy, and yet we might lose him when we clearly need him. The alternative is that Rafa rotate his midfield, but that could easily mean dropped points in a league where points are at a premium. Dilemma.

I don’t understand paying up front ; we don’t get a cash discount! It’s creative accounting by Ashley there’s no reason for it! We pay cash upfront and yet give easy terms to buyers! Wtf?

You might sell him though, and bring in a genuine upgrade on Diame, and go in with Shelvey and this other to start, and Diame and Hayden as back up for example, but you are still losing a very good young talent, a better player than Hayden, and a more valuable asset than Diame.

I’m not listening to any transfer speculation it’s pointless. We will know what we stand once the window shuts. Either rafa will have been backed sufficiently or rafa is leaving next summer.
The day Ashley leaves I’m going to be very happy but I can’t see that being anytime soon.

BTW can anyone answer why Rafa pursued Sturridge and badly wanted this crock, before he dumped all over pardew. Its hardly been mentioned here, we just laughed at pardew, which is fair enough. But it could have been us.

    Jun 20, 2018 at 10:43 PM

Yeah, it’s tight under Ashley. Rafa must have turned his mind, like Pardew before him, to the notion that maybe he just can’t succeed with Newcastle under this owner. It has historically been so so tight, so little margin for error under Ashley. Still we will have at least one more season of progress under Rafa, and if then he leaves, then really the fans simply must unite and rise up against Ashley or be reconciled to affordable football and occasional relegations for evermore.

    Munster – it’s called a cunning plan.
Rafa chased Sturridge at Ashley’s behest knowing that it was never going to happen so that we would all be so relieved that we didn’t get him and meanwhile they smuggled Joselu in the back door to cheer us up.

Maybe, even Rafa has been taken in by southern Sammy’s half hearted promises like we have been for a few year’s now.
Unlike us, he can and will, walk away sooner rather than later.( see his contract out within 12 months)..and who would blame him.
It’s not what I want…it’s the best thing to happen to my club since Sir Bobby graced us with his genius. But let’s face it, the familiar signs are there….being tight as a kippers arse with the finances and never coming out to support his manager or even ‘the board’
I don’t know what the answer is….if there is one…to persuade this lump of toe fungus to leave our club alone….to let it breath…operate as a proper sporting football club which is, and always will be, one of the main heartbeats of our proud city.
Only an outsider couldn’t, wouldn’t see the potential of the club and just treat it as a cold cashcow.
But I think his belly sized bubble will burst one day and our honest supporters of the club..supporters of our beautiful north east will stop going to matches, stop buying chav crap from his cheap stores run by tired overworked, robotic staff…..our day will come….one day
