Star Player Moves Closer To The Door At Newcastle

Mikel Merino is getting closer to the door at Newcastle and his move to Real Sociedad for his release clause of £10M is almost completed.

His new manager at Sociedad Asier Garitano was appointed in May and has prioritized Merino as his top transfer target this summer.

Garitano has followed the talented youngster for several years and thinks the 21-year-old has the capability to become a great player in the future.

Mikel Merino with Rafa Benitez – goodbye son

This is what Asier Garitano has said when asked if the deal is done:

“Until it becomes official, no, and I think it still has not been finalised.”

“He’s someone I’ve know for many years, when we played against Osasuna with Leganes in the Segunda Division.”

“It could be a good signing for us. He has been at important clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle.”

And, at the age of 21, he has a great future ahead of him. We hope it can be completed.”

It’s worrying that we can lose a top youngster so easily.

But Mikel wanted a guarantee of first-team football at Newcastle and Rafa couldn’t (wouldn’t) promise him that.

Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame looked so good for us this year and one new central midfielder will be coming in this summer.

Mikel is ambitious and wasn’t willing to (potentially) spend a lot of time on the bench at Newcastle next season and that’s why he left.

He also left Borussia Dortmund for Newcastle last summer because of a lack of playing time in Germany.

We only want players who want to be at Newcastle, so that’s the way it goes sometimes.

But it’s still disappointing.

Comments welcome.

as you say Lesh the slights hint that Rafa had signed would have had folk scrambling for ST
so why is the club on a news blackout/lockdown it has to make you think what’s going on !!!!

lesh – “Just thinking about the possibility that Rafa has committed to the club in the context of ST sales, if I wanted to boost them, I’d make sure the news of Rafa would be out by now with as little delay as possible.”

You’re right – which begs the question, is the hierarchy missing a trick or is there something even bigger than Rafa’s signing going on behind the scenes?

In this day of e-signatures and other remote communications solutions, what was the real reason why Rafa would actually have to come into St James’ Park? What requires his actual, physical presence? A photocall? A handshake on pre-agreed contract terms? Is that important enough to drag him away from his family without any other context?

Genuinely curious if anyone has any suggestions

Bobbybee – ‘re your health records.
If you decide to chase things up yourself the key phrase is a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act sometimes abbreviated to SAR. Hoy in these terms with the names of the hospital/health authority into Google and you make get further info as to how to apply ie they might send you an application form or say a letter might do.
    Could cost £10 _ £50.
Heath authorities/BMC have a poor record, historically, of covering things up.
By making a formal application you then tether them to a time frame to respond.

Sort for bringing it up again but I think toonces has a point from last night about mitro. It does seem posters are quick to jump on him for a poor performance. Not just on here though, also on twitter. Reading the twitter comments is quite frustrating, especially so called local journalists like Steve wraith. Quiet when it is all going well for him but outspoken when this poor performance comes up. Not just during the World cup.

He had a bad game, so did Serbia. He was up against Miranda and Thiago silva with nobody running of him or beyond him. I don’t see a bad performance yesterday, in context of his performances this year, as justification for Rafa not picking him and sending him out on loan. Likewise, I don’t see a good performance to be used as a stick to beat Rafa with as some do.
I made a biggish comment on here the other week about needing balance when looking at things like this but nobody really replied and I can’t be bothered searching for it.

Posters like to go on about him picking him bookings but he picked up 3 for Fulham in half season. He misses too many chances some say and I agree but you have to say he is improving. This season just gone he’s scored 20 goals for us, Fulham and Serbia. He may not be a natural goal scorer but he is improving this side of his game. Plus, how many on here say this yet were advocating signing batshuayi in Jan on loan! I do believe that if mitro scored 1 goal every game next season until the last match, he would still be criticised by some for not scoring in the last match. The posters that also seem to jump on him for missing too many chances were the same posters defending Dwight Gayle saying how he was getting in the right positions. I’m just asking for a bit of consistency.

They say that you shouldn’t go by performances at the World Cup to tell you how good a player is and it is true. Timo Werner is a very good young striker but has looked hopeless this tournament. A lot of posters are very fickle about this and will make minds up on players based on a couple games. When we were linked with aboubakar for £10m, many posters surprisingly said they hadn’t seen him. He was then judged on a poor performance at confederations cup by the same posters. He is actually a very good striker as he proved again this season just gone.

Nobody on here has suggested mitro is world class, far from it actually but he is a good, improving young striker who has potential to be a very effective cf. I’ve always been adamant that he shouldn’t be sold or loaned but he shouldn’t be first choice for us either. When you have a selection of strikers, you need some to offer different qualities. So someone of mitro’s ilk, someone like gayle etc. Unless we find someone who is the complete package but that is rare and if you do find them, they are very raw or are very expensive.

Rafa will sell him and we’ll get £20m for him. Rafa has not liked him since he arrived and that is fair enough, managers make their own decisions. I’m safe to say that we back Rafa and support him to make his decisions, but doesn’t mean we agree with his decisions. It’s a game of opinions and doesn’t mean he is a poor player. If anything, Rafa should have been backed by he club to replace him and he was not. Should have made more use of him while he was here but thats not the point.

Bournemouth look to be signing brooks from Sheffield, £10m. He is a very good young player that somebody like us should go for, needs more developing but it will be worth it.

Tbh I’m sick of hearing about Merino. What a waste of space he turned out to be. Nothing more than used us to get a move to Spain by insisting that ridiculous clause was inserted.
Premier League to tough for the delicate flower then? Not prepared to knuckle down and EARN a place in the team? Nobody – and I mean nobody – has the right to demand a place in the NUFC team.
His ability has been grossly overrated. A decent start that flattered to deceive and then he started losing the ball in dangerous positions.
Good riddance to him. If you don’t want to fight for your place you’re no good to a team that has to fight hard to win games. Shelvey and Diame lifted their game when it really mattered, why he sulked in the background.

21-year-old attacker Jean-Philippe Mateta arrived in Germany last night ahead of a €10m move from Lyon to Mainz

Previously linked to us this player. Perhaps Mainz signing him means they are looking to sell Muto who was linked with us again only yesterday.

ronaldo, well argued. Just as a rejoinder, the reason I picked up on his flaws last night was not to have a go at the lad, but because everything he did was to justify what some of us have been saying all along – he isn’t a Rafa kind of player.

I totally agree with you on one thing, though, as the only Newcastle player at the World Cup, the local press should be supporting him.

Mr T, they’ve got the operation notes, but now saying x rays aren’t there. Seems the worst kneecap was only broken into four pieces so I don’t think that justifies removal. I’ll find out when the notes arrive as I’ve ordered a copy.
As for my medical notes in general my current gp is doing everything she can to chase them down.
They have them from 1998, but none prior to that. I’ve given them a list of my previous gp’s so hopefully they’ll eventually track them down.
The problem is there’s nothing digitalised, so we’re looking for paper records now.

    Dubai, Hibbit, RobLeenio

Maybe Rafa dropped into SJP to see if there’d been any progress on the transfer front or maybe that Ashley’d moved on agreeing his pre-contract requirements, – found some ambition?

That being so, he’d be in and out in ten minutes.

Or being optimistic, maybe Ashley wanted to bring Rafa up to speed on behind the scenes developments. Nah, that’d mean communicating and Ashley doesn’t do it.

Ronaldo, in all fairness, it’s hard to find a player who hasn’t been linked to us mate. 🙂 Just take a look on newsnow Newcastle and the list just keeps growing, most of which are just utter nonsense and totally made up.
We’ll know who Rafa wants when they arrive. I doubt he’ll invite a bidding war by telling the press who he’s really looking at. That would be silly knowing how tight Ashley is and Rafa is too wise for that.

Rafa likes a mobile striker. Mitro is not mobile. He’s good in the air and good at holding the ball up but mobile he ain’t 🙂
He lacks discipline as well. He’s good at what he does but I just don’t think he fits with what Rafa requires.

lesh, honestly I can’t think of any reason why he would be there other than a meeting which was required to be held face-to-face. Why would the personal element be required with Charnley, who is presumably on the end of a phone or skype link at any time? Same with Ashley or his minions.

So, who else was Rafa meeting?

While it was great to see Rafa arriving at SJP, I wish I knew who arrived 15 minutes earlier / later.

Not sure about decisions, having an eye on who we might get in the next round. I would like to see a team progress , play wise, as the competition develops.
Certainly not sacrificing a game to allow someone who has not played so far to get on the pitch.

Micky, not true – there are loads of suppliers out there who will provide e-services for signatures, with date and time stamps, review / change history etc. They’re less open to fraud than the old ink with witness methods, and they’ve been legal since 2000

    https://www.signable.co.uk/electronic-signature-legality/europe/uk/

Mind you, probably most people prefer the old method, which does give an opportunity for a publicity photo also.
